  • This paper presents the effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation. Fundamental issues in tunneling under high groundwater table are discussed and the effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation was examined using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element analysis. Based on the results the interaction mechanism between the tunnelling and groundwater is identified for cases having different lining permeabilities. Examined items include pore pressures around lining and lining stresses. Face deformation behavior as well as ground surface movement patterns was also examined. Besides, the effect of grouting pattern was investigated. The results indicated that the effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation increases lining stresses as well as ground movements, and that the tunnel excavation and groundwater interaction can only be captured through a fully coupled analysis. Implementations of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • Application of biopolymers to improve the mechanical properties of soils has been extensively reported. However, a comprehensive understanding of various engineering applications is necessary to enhance their effectiveness. While numerous experimental studies have investigated the use of biopolymers as injection materials, a detailed understanding of their injection behavior in soil through numerical analyses is lacking. This study aimed to address this gap by employing pore network modeling techniques to analyze the injection characteristics of biopolymer solutions in soil. A pore network was constructed from computed tomography images of Ottawa 20-30 sand. Fluid flow simulations incorporated power-law parameters and governing equations to account for the viscosity characteristics of biopolymers. Agar gum was selected as the biopolymer for analysis, and its injection characteristics were evaluated in terms of concentration and pore-size distribution. Results indicate that the viscosity properties of biopolymer solutions significantly influence the injection characteristics, particularly concerning concentration and injection pressure. Furthermore, notable trends in injection characteristics were observed based on pore size and distribution. Importantly, in contrast to previous studies, meaningful correlations were established between the viscosity of the injected fluid, injection pressure, and injection distance. Thus, this study introduces a novel methodology for integrating pore network construction and fluid flow characteristics into biopolymer injections, with potential applications in optimizing field injections such as permeation grouting.

  • A practical modeling approach has been proposed in this study to better understand the behavior of penetration grouting which is normally applied to the jointed rock masses to increase the bearing capacity and to reduce the ground water flow into the tunnel. Based on Bingham model together with a steady-state flow of the grout, penetration model is simulated in the commercial package called UDEC and, injection pressure as well as joint thickness are found to be the main parameters to determine the range of grout spread. Another numerical model on fracturing grouting is also suggested and, in this case, the tensile strength as well as cohesion of the rock masses are proven to be the major factors to decide the fracturing mechanism of the rock masses. The reinforcement effect of the grout-reinforced rock masses is calculated from the suggested algorithm on orthotropic material model and it is found that the directional stiffness of reinforced rock masses is increased up to 3 to 4 times compared with original jointed rock masses. Future work will be concentrated on the water control around the tunnel by the grout injection and a model test will also be performed to verify the suggested methods developed in this study.

  • The slope reinforcing method utilized in this paper reinforces the ground overall by means of filling borehole as well as permeating grout material into ground by injecting it through the grouting pipe. In order to reflect these characteristics to design, not only the ground reinforcing effect by the structural material itself but also the ground strength improvement effect by the grouting injection must be quantitively evaluated. But precedent research of it has been insufficient. Therefore, the slope reinforcing method was applied to the weathered rockmass slope situated in the highway in order to analyze reinforcing effect and the instrumentation of slope was performed. Through analysis of this field test, the slope reinforcing method was proved to be effective and back analysis method based on instrumentation values of slope was proposed to apply to reinforcing design. In this paper, the effectiveness of reinforcing method was certified through proposed back analysis.

  • Engineering properties of soils is studied by permeating injection of water-glass chemical grout by use of a large sized grouting equipment of 1.5 shot system. Furthermore, the effectiveness of chemical groutinig by taking water-glass chemical grout combined with portland-cement for the purpose of improving the soil strength is confirmed. Relationships between main factors which cause the effectiveness of chemical grouting are described, and the factors are velocity and temperature of flowing water; grain size distribution and density of soils; density, viscosity, gel time and volume of grouts; injection pressure and grouting process. Improvement of the effectiveness of chemical grouting in flowing water by preventing the dilution and flowing down of grouts is investigated. Moreover, local shear failures and upheaval phenomena of ground are also investigated by field measurement.

  • Waveform micropile is an advanced construction method that combined the concept of conventional micropile with jet grouting method. This new form of micropile was developed to improve frictional resistance, which consequently leads to achieving higher bearing capacity and cost efficiency. Two field tests were conducted to examine the field applicability as well as to verify the effects of bearing capacity enhancement. In particular, waveform micropile construction using jet grouting method was performed to evaluate the viability of waveform micropile installation. After testing, the surrounding ground was excavated to check the accomplishment on the shape of waveform micropile. The result showed that waveform micropile can be installed by adjusting the grouting time and pressure. In the loading tests, waveform micropile's bearing capacity increased by 1.4 to 2.3 times depending on their shapes when compared with conventional micropile. Overall results clearly demonstrated that waveform micropile is an enhanced construction method that can improve bearing capacity.

  • This study addresses preliminary design and construction specification for micropiles. Especially several design methods for micropiles in sands, clays or mixed soil layers are described. The bearing capacity of micropiles are mainly depended upon the shaft resistance. Therefore, the pressure of grouting is one of the most important design parameters for the bearing capacity evaluation of micropile. There is no theoretical way to evaluate the shaft resistance of micropile up to now because grouting method is another key parameter for micropile design approach. Because of above reasons, the present design approaches of the micropile are based on the collected field data The bearing capacities of designed micropiles should be verified by static load tests before and after construction at the planned site.

  • Rock-mass grouting plays a crucial role in the construction of dams and deep caverns, effectively preventing seepage in the foundations, enhancing stability, and mitigating hazards. Most rock grouting is affected by hydrogeological and rock engineering indices such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass quality (Q-value), geological strength index (GSI), joint spacing (Js), joint aperture (Ap), lugeon value (Lu), secondary permeability index (SPI), and coefficient of permeability (K). Therefore, accurate geological analysis of basic rock properties and guidelines for grouting construction are essential for ensuring safe and effective grouting design and construction. Such analysis has been applied in dam construction sites, with a particular focus on the geological characteristics of bedrock and the development of prediction methods for grout take. In South Korea, many studies have focused on grout injection materials and construction management techniques. However, there is a notable lack of research on the analysis of hydrogeological and rock engineering information for rock masses, which are essential for the development of appropriate rock grouting plans. This paper reviews the current state of research into the correlation between the grout take with important hydrogeological and rock engineering indices. Based on these findings, future directions for the development of rock grouting research in South Korea are discussed.

  • A case study of monitoring and analysis of surface settlement induced by tunneling of Tabriz metro line 2 (TML2) is presented in this paper. The TML2 single tunnel has been excavated using earth pressure balanced TBM with a cutting-wheel diameter of 9.49 m since 2015. Presented measurements of surface settlements, were collected during the construction of western part of the project (between west depot and S02 station) where the tunnel was being excavated in sand and silt, below the water table and at an average axis depth of about 16 m. Settlement readings were back-analyzed using Gaussian formula, both in longitudinal and transversal directions, in order to estimate volume loss and settlement trough width factor. In addition to settlements, face support and tail grouting pressures were monitored, providing a comprehensive description of the EPB performance. Using the gap model, volume loss prediction was carried out. Also, COB empirical method for determination of the face pressure was employed in order to compare with field monitored data. Likewise, FE simulation was used in various sections employing the code Simulia ABAQUS, to investigate the efficiency of numerical modelling for the estimating of the tunneling induced-surface settlements under such a geotechnical condition. In this regard, the main aspects of a mechanized excavation were simulated. For the studied sections, numerical simulation is not capable of reproducing the high values of in-situ-measured surface settlements, applying Mohr-Coulomb constitutive law for soil. Based on results, for the mentioned case study, the range of estimated volume loss mostly varies from 0.2% to 0.7%, having an average value of 0.45%.

  • In this paper, a laboratory model test was conducted to evaluate grouting efficiency of ordinary portland cement(OPC) and micro cement used in MIS(Micro-Injection Process System). For this research, a injection equipment was developed for pressure permeation which can evenly simulate various grouting tests in a laboratory and suggested a standard for the production of the test specimen. Using the injection device, the laboratory injection tests of grouts were prepared with water/cement ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 5:1. The analysis of injection test for pressure permeation showed that the efficiency of injection increases linearly as the water/cement ratio increases. Comparison of efficiency of the injection indicates that MIS with a relatively smaller average diameter shows more efficient injection than the OPC. In the low ratio of water/cement as 2:1~1:1, the injection efficiency of OPC was especially poor. Also, a nonlinear grout volume-injection time is represented by a hyperbolic model and grout volume predicted by hyperbolic model was compared with the value measured. From the comparison, it shows that the hyperbolic model has the potential of evaluating the efficiency of grouting.
