  • This study explored the elements that affect team achievements in virtual environments. In this study, consideration was given to the role of group dynamics in facilitating productive interaction. We aspired to reveal the mechanisms of group dynamics and examined how group dynamics affected team achievements in virtual environments. The empirical study was performed with undergraduate students enrolled in an e-learning course. In collaboration with other majors, students executed team projects and managed project issues in forums or chat rooms. The results of the empirical study indicated that leadership, creative friction, and group cohesion (components of group dynamics) had positive relationships with team achievements. The findings confirmed that addressing creative conflict is a method to improve team performance and that leadership is a key factor in project teams.

  • Purpose: To investigate the influence of a team learning climate on group performance of hospital nurses. Method: The subjects were 386 nurses who have been working in six hospitals. The data were collected by a structured questionnaire from January 20 to April 30 of 2006. The data were analyzed by SAS version 8.2, including descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of group performance was 3.38 and team learning climate was 4.89. The group performance was positively correlated with team learning climate(r=.40, p<.0001). The team learning climate explained 15% of the variance in group performance. Conclusion: The findings showed that team learning climate was an important factor in enhancing group performance in nursing organization. Therefore, the nurse manager will establish the strategies to improve the team learning climate of the nurses in order to promote organizational performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to fine out whether melodic percussion playing group program affects the team cohesion and team efficacy of youth soccer players. In this study fifty seven middle school soccer players were participated. The participants were assigned to either a melodic percussion playing group or a control group. In order to identify the effectiveness of music program, assessments were conducted using the team cohesion and team efficacy scales before and after the program. The results of comparison analysis through t-test are as follows. First, in the posttest of team cohesion between groups, the experimental group showed a significant difference over the control group. In the pretest and posttest examinations within a experimental group, the group also showed a significant difference. Second, in the posttest of team efficacy between groups, the experimental group showed a significant difference over the control group. In the pretest and posttest examinations within a experimental group, the group also showed a significant difference. These results of this study suggest that melodic percussion playing group program may be an effective intervention tool to improve team cohesion and team efficacy of youth soccer players.

  • For achieving team performance, organizations should consider member's competency and their collective competency simultaneously. The principal aim of this research is to examine relationships among collective competency, group cohesiveness, team performance. 438 employees composing 52 teams participated in this empirical study. Results show that the mean of member competency was not associated with team performance. Results also show that there was no effect of group cohesiveness on team performance. However, consistent expectation, the interactive effect of collective competency and group cohesiveness on team performance was significant. Implications for future research are also discussed.

  • In this paper, an embedded micro processor based resistance spot welding controller is introduced which has been recently developed by Hyosung Co. Ltd. The performance of rapid and constant high current control is tested experimentally. This paper shows configurations of measuring system for high current and realtime RMS conversion techniques of sampled discrete data. A digital proportional control is adopted for this system and the result shows that this new product is working well at wide range of welding current and the performance is improved compared with some other commercially available controllers that are widely used in our industries. User friendly MMI system and a computer network system to monitor each welding processes are also presented.

  • The effective management of knowledge has become one of the critical success factors in current organizations. In spite of the extensive use of Knowledge Management System (KMS), useful information and knowledge resources are still transmitted through personal networks among people in organizations. Thus, social network theory which focuses on social relationships in organization can be a fruitful theoretical resource for enhancing Knowledge Management (KM) performances. In this study, we investigate the effects of intra-team network characteristics (i.e., group density and degree of centralization) and external boundary spanning activities on knowledge management performances of a team. We also acknowledge that all group members do not necessarily agree on the team goal and actively disseminate useful information and knowledge. Drawing on the political perspective on KM which emphasizes the role of trust among group members, we examine the mediating effects of team trust between internal/external network characteristics and KM performances. From the data of 220 teams in financial companies in Korea, we found that: (1) group density had positive effects on KM performances (i.e., knowledge creation, sharing, and use). (2) However, centralization was not significantly associated with KM performances. (3) Team trust was found to be an important factor mediating the relationship between intra-team network characteristics, boundary spanning activities, and KM performances. Based on these results, we discuss and suggest possible implications of the findings when designing and implementing KM practices.
