We systematically analyze the influence of fracture junction, solute transfer characteristics on transport patterns in discrete, two-dimensional fracture network models. Regular lattices and random fracture networks with power-law length distributions are considered in conjunction with particle tracking methods. Solute transfer probabilities at fracture junctions are determined from analytical considerations and from simple complete mixing and streamline routing models. For regular fracture networks, mixing conditions at fracture junctions are always dominated by either complete mixing or streamline routing end member cases. Moreover bulk transport properties such as the spreading and the dilution of solute are highly sensitive to the mixing rule. However in power-law length networks there is no significant difference in bulk transport properties, as calculated by assuming either of the two extreme mixing rules. This apparent discrepancy between the effects of mixing properties at fracture junctions in regular and random fracture networks is explained by the statistics of the coordination number and of the flow conditions at fracture intersections. We suggest that the influence of mixing rules on bulk solute transport could be important in systematic orthogonal fracture networks but insignificant in random networks.

This study was conducted to find end-members and tracers which are effective to be applied in the End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA) model for runoff separation at the Gwangneung coniferous forest catchment (13.6ha), Gyeonggido, Korea. We monitored three successive rainfall events during two weeks from June 26, 2005 to July 10, 2005, and analysed chemical properties of rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, groundwater and soil water considered as main components of storm runoff. The followings are the results of analyses of each component and tracer. Groundwater, soil water and rainfall (or throughfall) were dominant runoff components. Rainfall and groundwater were selected as main components for the two components-one tracer mixing model, and groundwater, soilwater and throughfall were selected as main components for the three components-two tracers mixing model. Tracers were selected from anion ($Cl^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$), cation ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$) and Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) in event 1, 2, and 3. $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and ANC were selected in the two components-one tracer mixing model and ${SO_4}^{2-}-K^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}-Na^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}-Ca^{2+}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$-ANC, and $Ca^{2+}$-ANC were selected in the three components-two tracers mixing model. Selected main runoff components and tracers can provide basic information to determine the contribution rate of each runoff component and identify the runoff process in a forest watershed.

This study aims to separate hydrograph into baseflow and event water to calculate baseflow rate during a rainfall in small catchments, Yuseong, Daejeon, The hydrograph of stream during a period with no excess rainfall will decay. The discharge is composed entirely of groundwater contributions. During the period, the Cl concentration of the stream water can be regarded as being in equilibrium with that of the groundwater. Using Cl as a conservative tracer, two-component hydrograph separations were performed from end point of the period to next end point. The required data were obtained by monitoring of the surface water table, along with discharge rate of stream. Cl concentration of rainfall, surface water were measured and recorded. Hydrograph separation, a mixing model using chemical tracer is applied to chemical hydrograph separation technique. These results show that baseflow rates are 31.6% of rainfall in the catchments during study period.
The geochemical studies on groundwater in the borehole, which is straddled by multi-packer (MP) system, were carried out from a volcanic terrain in the Yeosu area. The pH of groundwater collected from selected sections in the MP-installed borehole is much higher (up to 9.6) than that of the borehole groundwater (7.0-7.9) collected using conventional pumping technique. Hydrochemistry shows that the groundwater has a typical chemical change with increasing sampling depth, suggesting that the groundwater is evolved through water-rock interaction along the fracture-controlled flow paths. The groundwater from the deeper part (138-175 m below the surface) in borehole KI is characterized by the Ca-C11 type with high Ca (up to 160 mg/L) and Cl (up to 293 mg/L) contents, probably reflecting seawater intrusion. The groundwater also has high sodium and sulfate contents compared to the waters from other boreholes. These observed groundwater chemistry is explained by the cation exchange, sulfide oxidation, and mixing process with seawater along the flow path.
Biogeochemical processes in groundwater-stream water mixing zone are recently of great interest because biodegradation and natural attenuation of aquatic contaminants may occur through the processes. The objectives of this study are to investigate the hydrologic and biogeochemical processes at the groundwater-stream water mixing zone through which surface water-driven nitrate may be naturally attenuated, and to examine the effect of the vertical flow exchange flux on biogeochemical processes using correlation analysis. To examine the direction of vertical water flow in the zone, vertical hydraulic gradients were measured at several depths using mini-piezometers. Microbial populations in soil samples of the zone were also analyzed by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Cloning methods. In addition, partial correlations among vertical flow exchange, nitrate concentration and microbial activity was investigated to examine their mutual interaction. The results showed the significant interaction among the three parameters, resulting in natural attenuation of nitrate. This study showed an example of the biogeochemical fuction of groundwater-stream water mixing zone, which can be predictable from the examination of the interaction among microbial activities, concentration of contamination and vertical flow exchange flux. temperature show a significant difference in adjacent streambed, Also, the results shows that distribution of temperature was more affected by groundwater direction than intensity of flux.

The purpose of this study is to understand the high saline water phenomenon of Handong-ri area in the eastern coast of Jeju Island, were investigate the tidal effect of groundwater level, variation of electric conductivity and temperature, geological logging on the monitoring wells, chemical water quality, and ratios of oxygen istope of groundwater and seawater Results in investigating variation of interface zone of freshwater and saline water represented that the hyaloclastites formed at below groundwater table is developing toward the coast; this area consisted of stratum of good permeability. Hyaloclastites is presumed the main path of the high salinity water There are a lot of movement by the tide at upper layer. Salinity of lower layer spreads to upper up step in proportion to tidal energy. Because of hydrogeological characteristics, Interface zone of freshwater and saline water is made, High salinity of groundwater occur in east coastal area of Jeju Island. Therefore, I think that high saline groundwater phenomenon is natural condition by simple mixing.
Lead bas been found in the groundwater in Door County, Wiscorsin, with temporally and spatially irregular distribution in concentration. Correlation coeffidents were calculated among lead indicators in groundwater(frequency of lead detections, mean and maximum concentration of lead detections) and seven independent variables(stucture and geographic factors of wells, hydrogeological factors at lead-arsenate mixing sites and the level of soil contamination) which are possibly related to the lead level in groundwater. The significance of relationships was determined statistically by a t-test at the 90% confidence level, and indicated that the spatially located lead-arsenate mixing sites provided the lead in groundwater in the study area. A total of 112 groundwater samples were collected from 5 house wells with previous lead detects. Lead was detected in partides on ifiter papers with $0.45{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ pore size, but not in filtrates. The result of chemical analysis for lead indicates that lead is associated with partides in groundwater in Door County. Subsequently, the irregular distribution of lead in the county results from the transport of particulate lead along the advective groundwater movement through the preferential pathways sucn as vertical and bedding-plane joints.

Main radionuclides of the soil waste stored in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute are Co-60 and Cs-137. Moisture content of soil is 12%, pH of soil is 5.8, and content of organic matter is 2.2 %. Radioactive concentrations of the soil particle size of which is less than 0.063mm and soil in the drum surface of which is more than radiation dose rate 0.05mR/hr are higher. Meanwhile, radioactive concentration of soil in the drum surface of which is less than radiation dose rate 0.02 mR/hr are mostly lower. On using the mixing solution of ammonium sulfate and citric acid, 62% Co was removed from soil and 41% Cs was removed. Also, on using the mixing solution of ammonium nitrate and citric acid, 61% Co was removed from soil and 39% Cs was removed, and on using the mixing solution of ammonium potassium oxalate, 36% Co was removed and only 3% Cs was removed. And on using only water, removal efficiency is less than 5%.

In this study, the mass transfer behaviors of phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene in soil slurry reactor (SSR) using two-liquid phase (TLP) system were investigated. The mass transfer ratio and rate of PAH in the TLP system using light paraffine oil, which has the highest solubility of PAH, were influenced by the amount of light paraffine oil and mixing speed. When the amount of light paraffine oil decreased from 15 % to 2.5 % (v/v), the mass transfer ratio of anthracene decreased significantly compared with that of phenanthrene and pyrene. As mixing speed increased, the initial mass transfer rate of PAH within 1 day was enhanced. However, each final mass transfer ratio of three PAHs after 5 day was similar irrespective of mixing speed.
Groundwater preferentially flows through sediment layers with high permeability such as colluvium. Its flow paths are called groundwater vein streams. An underground temperature survey is a method to locate vein streams by underground temperature anomalies associated with flowing groundwater. A groundwater flow system near an irrigation reservoir located in the upper part of a landslide block was surveyed with this method. After a geomembrane lining was installed in the reservoir, the total cross-sectional area of the vein streams in the aquifer decreased to as little as 0.35 times that before installation of the liner. A change in groundwater quality also indicated that the mixing of groundwater with leaked water from the reservoir stopped after installation of the lining.
