수은과 비소로 오염된 시료의 측정주파수와 농도 변화에 따른 전기적 특성 (Electrical Characteristics against Frequency and Concentration of Contaminated Soils by Mercury and Arsenic)

  • In general, ground pollution can be classified with soil pollution and underground water pollution. And ground pollution contaminates the land with garbage dumps and other harmful waste products as heavy metals that can also eventually enter our water supply. This study was conducted to define a characteristics of the electrical resistivity and the permittivity of weathered soil that was contaminated with heavy metals as Mercury and Arsenic. It is not easy whether contamination of soil as subsurface contamination is decided or not and at an early stage especially do that. Therefore the electrical resistivity and the permittivity were used to make up for this defects. These methods are more economical and more effective than the existing methods. And variation of the electrical resistivity and the permittivity values were found against the change of concentration of Mercury and Arsenic aqueous solutions and measuring frequency. These analyzed results indicate that the electrical resistivity and the permittivity tend to decrease against increasing measuring frequency. The electrical resistivity and the permittivity are also found to show the function of frequency.

  • Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether is one of several fuel oxygenates added to gasoline to improve fuel combustion and reduce tile resulting concentration of hydrocarbon. Thus, MTBE transfer readily to groundwater from gasoline leaking from Underground Storage Tank. Therefor, there are significant risks and costs associated with the water contamination. MTBE is far more water soluble than gasoline hydrocarbon. The purpose of the this study is to test the ability of ground tire with facultative bacteria. Bacillus brevis, to sorb MTBE. The process is consisted both batch and column experiment to determine the sorption capacity. And Biofilm is observed by SEM in the column. Finally, it is clear that ground tire represent an attractive and relatively inexpensive sorption medium for a MTBE. The authors can surmise that to determine the economic cost of ground tire utilization, tile cost to sorb a given mass of contaminant by ground tire will have to be compared to currently accepted sorption media. and Bacillus brevis strain was eliminated on MTBE, too. The biobarrier that ground tire with bacteria, has potential for use in the remediation of MTBE-contaminated environments.

국내 폐금속 광산지역에서의 토양, 지하수, 쌀의 중금속 노출에 따른 인체 위해성평가 (Risk Assessment for Heavy Metals in Soil, Ground Water, Rice Grain nearby Abandoned Mine Areas)

  • BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study are to investigate the contamination levels of heavy metals in soil, ground water, and agricultural product near the abandoned Boeun and Sanggok mine areas in Korea and to assess the health risk for these local residents exposed to the toxic heavy metals based on analytical data. METHODS AND RESULTS: By the results of human health risk assessment for local residents around Boeun and Sanggok, human exposure to cadmium, copper, arsenic from soil and to lead, cadmium, and arsenic from rice grain were higher in Sanggok, but human exposure to zinc and arsenic from ground water was higher in Boeun. By the results of hazard index (HI) evaluation for arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc, HI values in both areas were higher than 1.0. This result indicated that the toxicity hazard through the continuous exposure to lead, cadmium, arsenic from rice, ground water, and soil would be likely to occur to the residents in the areas. Cancer risk assessment for arsenic, risks from the rice were exposed to one to two out of 10,000 people in Boeun and one of 1,000 people in Sanggok. These results showed that the cancer risks of arsenic in both areas were 10~100 times greater than the acceptable cancer risk range of US EPA ($1{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}1{\times}10^{-5}$). CONCLUSION(S): Therefore, if these two local residents consume continuously with arsenic contaminated soil, ground water, and rice, the adverse health effects (carcinogenic potential) would be more increased.

다슬기(Semisulcospira libertine)의 미생물 오염도 평가 및 해감 제거공정에 따른 저감화 효과 (Investigation of Microbial Contamination in Semisulcospira libertine and Evaluation of Its Reduction Effects by Sediment Removal Treatment)

  • 본 연구에서는 다슬기 중의 자연균총의 정량적 오염도 분석과 해감 제거 공정(지하수, 상수)에 따른 저감화 효과를 조사하였다. 다슬기 중의 일반세균, 대장균군과 대장균, 진균 및 황색포도상구균의 정량적 검출을 위해 표준평판법을 사용하여 각각 plate count agar (PCA), potato dextrose agar (PDA), 대장균군/대장균용 3M Petrifilm 및 황색포도상구균용 3M Petrifilm에 도말하여 집락을 계수하였다. 지하수와 상수 처리에 따른 이들 균의 저감화 정도 역시 동일한 방법으로 수행되었다. 다슬기 원료 중의 미생물 오염도 분석시, 일반세균, 대장균군 및 진균은 각각 6.40, 2.70 및 $6.79{\log}_{10}CFU/g$로 조사되었다. 대장균과 황색포도상구균은 검출되지 않았다 (검출 한계: < $1{\log}_{10}CFU/g$). 그러나, 지하수로 해감 제거한 다슬기의 경우, 분석된 모든 미생물의 정량적 오염도가 원료 다슬기에 비해 높게 검출되었다. 특히 원료 다슬기에서 불검출이었던 대장균도 $2.46{\log}_{10}CFU/g$ 검출되었다. 상수로 해감 제거한 다슬기의 일반세균은 유의적으로 저감화 되지 않았으며(p<0.05), 대장균군은 유의적으로 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다(p>0.05). 진균만이 약간의 저감화(0.2 log 이하)를 유의적으로 보였다(p>0.05). 본 연구결과 지하수와 상수를 이용해서 해감 제거하는 공정만으로는 다슬기의 미생물학적 안전성을 확보하기 곤란한 것으로 판단된다.

  • Four types of land use were selected for sampling and study with different characteristics of heavy metal contamination during the period from August 1998 to June 2000. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments settling down in a gully pot to evaluate the contamination of Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Cr and Cu. An examination of six elements indicated that Zn, Cu and Pb were the heavy metals severely impacted by anthropogenic input in Seoul. An assessment of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban runoff and ground water was conducted based on samples collected from 31 sites and 12 wells, respectively, in Seoul City. The higher levels of alkyl benzenes in urban runoff indicated that Seoul areas were mainly contaminated through traffic sources.

일본 츠꾸이 선상지 지하수의 질산성 질소 오염에 대한 수문지구화학적 연구 (Hydrogeochemical Environmental Research in Nitrate Contamination in Alluvial Fan Area Groundwater in Tsukui, Central Japan)

  • 이 연구는 일본의 카나가와현 츠꾸이에 위치하고 있는 선상지에서 지하수 수질을 조절하는 요인들을 평가하기 위해 질산성 질소에 의해 오염된 지하수를 수문지구화학적으로 조사하였다. 2003년 월별 지하수의 수위는 강우에 의해 크게 증감하였지만, 지하수 내의 질산성 질소 농도는 약간의 변화만을 보여주었다. 뿐만아니라 년중 대부분 지하수 수질 기준의 최고 오염 수준 $10mgL^{-1}$을 초과하였다. 2003년 1년간 지하수의 재충전량은 1,730mm(지하수 수위의 일 증가의 년간 총합인 20,056mm와 일별 감소량의 년간 총합인 18,326mm의 차이)로 나타났다. 그러나 지하수 수위의 일별 증가량의 년간 총합(20,056mm)은 년간 강우량보다 약 10배 이상 높았다. 더욱이 일별 감소량의 년간 총합(18,326mm)은 많은 양의 지하수가 질산성 질소 오염과 함께 방출되었음을 보여주었다. 상당히 높은 질산성 질소를 보유한 강우가 있은 후, 선상지를 통해 많은 양의 지하수 유출입이 관찰되었다. 결과적으로, 산림지대를 포함한 이 선상지에서는 '질소 과잉' 또는 '질소 포화' 라고 하는 상태를 반영하고 있다. 많은 양의 지하수 방출은 지표수에서 질산성 질소의 오염과 같은 환경문제를 야기할 수 있으며, 본 연구를 통해 수문지구화학적 자료가 수질관리에 유용하길 기대한다.

도시화 지역에서 GIS를 이용한 지하수 질산성질소 분포 영향요인 분석 (Analysis of Influential Factors on Nitrate Distribution in Ground Water in an Urbanizing Area using GIS)

  • 도시화가 진행되는 소유역(성내-고덕천 유역)에 대하여 지하수 질산성질소의 공간적 분포에 미치는 영향요인을 규명하고 각 요인들의 오염기여도에 대한 상대적인 차이를 파악하기 위하여 GIS를 활용한 공간분석을 실시하였다. 영향요인으로는 토지이용도, 하수관 거리, 포장율, 녹지율 등을 고려하였다. 공간분석 결과, 토지이용도 중에서 도시화 지역과 경작지 등에서는 서로 상이한 질산성질소 분포가 나타났으며, 이는 도시화 지역에서는 하수관으로, 경작지에서는 비료성분으로 인하여 질산성질소 분포의 차이가 나타날 수 있음을 지시한다. 지하수 관정에서 하수관까지의 거리가 $60\~75m$ 정도 지점까지는 거리의 증가에 따라 질산성질소 농도가 감소한다. 특히 도시화 지역 내에서 하수관거리와 질산성질소 농도가 음의 상관도를 보이며, 이는 하수관이 질산성질소의 주 오염원임을 의미한다. 또한, 도시화 지역 질산성질소 농도와 포장율이 음의 상관도를 보이는 것도 질산성질소의 오염물질이 지표면에 기인하고 있음을 지시한다. 결과적으로 도시화가 급속히 진행되고 있는 지역에서는 하수관의 설치와 유지관리 및 토지이용형태에 대한 체계적인 관리가 지하수의 질산성질소 오염예방에 중요함을 의미한다.

전자 수용체가 BTEX, MTBE로 오염된 토양의 혐기성 자연정화에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Electron Acceptors on the Anaerobic Biodegradation of BTEX and MTBE at Contaminated Sites)

  • Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) contamination in groundwater often coexists with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) near the source of the plume. Then, groundwater contamination problems have been developed in areas where the chemical is used. Common sources of water contamination by BTEX and MTBE include leaking underground gasoline storage tanks and leaks and spills from above ground fuel storage tanks, etc. In oil-contaminated environments, anaerobic biodegradation of BTEX and MTBE depended on the concentration and distribution of terminal electron acceptor. In this study, effect of electron acceptor on the anaerobic biodegradation for BTEX and MTBE-contaminated soil was investigated. This study showed the anaerobic biodegradation of BTEX and MTBE in two different soils by using nitrate reduction, ferric iron reduction and sulfate reduction. The soil samples from the two fields were enriched for 65 days by providing BTEX and MTBE as a sole carbon source and nitrate, sulfate or iron as a terminal electron acceptor. This study clearly shows that degradation rate of BTEX and MTBE with electron acceptors is higher than that without electron acceptors. Degradation rate of Ethylbenzene and Xylene is higher than that of Benxene, Toluene, and MTBE. In case of Benzene, Ethylbenzene, and MTBE, nitrate has more activation. In case of Toluene and Xylene, sulfate has more activation.

부산 석대 폐기물 매립장 일대의 지하수 오염 (Groundwater Contamination at the Seokdae Waste Landfill Area of Pusan City)

  • 매립장에서의 쓰레기는 주변 지역에 지하수오염, 악취, 유독가스 발생 등 큰 문제를 일으키고 있다. 본 연구에서는 최근에 부산시에서 만 6년 동안 사용해 왔었던 석대 폐기물 매립장 주변의 지하수 오염실태를 파악하고, 그 오염을 최소화할 수 있는 방안 연구를 목표로 매립장 주변의 우물과 시추공 내의 지하수위, 수질, 대수층 특성 등을 조사하고, 또 주변 하천의 수질, 매립장 일대의 지하수 분포 및 유동 상태 등을 연구하였다. 그 결과 지하로 침투하는 순수 침출수량은 일 평균 약 520 m$^3$로 추정되며, 침출수에 의한 지하수 오염범위가 매립장 중심에서 약 1-1.5 km 정도 까지에 이른다. 오염물질도 중금속류를 비롯한 기타 유해 성분들이 다량 존재한다. 앞으로 이 일대의 지하수를 보전 및 관리하기 위해서는 매립장과 지하수오염물질이 확산되고 있는 곳에 감시정을 여러개 설치하여 지하수위와 수질을 주기적으로 조사하고, 채수정을 설치하여 오염된 지하수를 뽑아내어 침출수 처리장에서 처리한 후 하천에 방류하여야 한다. 아울러 지하수 오염물질이 확산되고 있는 매립장 주변 지역에 차수벽 설치가 요구된다.

Persistent Organic Pollution and Arsenic Contamination in Asia Pacific Water: Case Study of Emerging Environmental Problems in Vietnam

  • This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the present status of several environmental problems caused by emerging toxic substances such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and arsenic in various environmental media in Vietnam. Monitoring data reported during the 1990s demonstrated elevated contamination of DDTs in most of these compartments in Vietnam. Studies in frame of the Asia-Pacific Mussel Watch Program revealed that fish, mussels and resident birds from Vietnam contained higher concentrations of DDTs as compared to other countries in region, suggesting the role of Vietnamese environment as a significant emission source of DDT in the Southeast Asian region. The estimated dietary intakes of PCBs and DDTs for Vietnamese were relatively high among Asian developing countries, suggesting potential risk for humans posed by thesechemicals. Widespread contamination of some endocrine active compounds such as alkylphenols and phthalates was observed at various sites along the coasts of northern and middle Vietnam. The presence of significant source of bisphenol-A along Red River estuary was revealed with the concentrations comparable to those reported for developed nations. A case study on seasonal variation of alkylphenols and phthalates in surface water of river delta and estuary of north and middle Vietnam indicated the differences in distribution of these compounds between dry and rainy seasons. Higher concentrations of alkylphenols and phthalates were found in dry season in estuary; while the contrasting pattern was observed in the river delta, showing elevated residues in rainy season. This result suggests the different behavior of alkylphenols and phthalates in river delta and coastal environment. From ecotoxicological perspectives, concentrations of bis-phenol A and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalates [DEHP] in surface water from some locations in Vietnam exceeded the guideline values for Ecotoxicological Effects and the Environmental Risk Limit, respectively, suggesting potential for toxic implications on aquatic wildlife. Widespread and elevated arsenic contamination was discovered inour recent surveys in groundwater in a large area of suburban areas of Hanoi city, the capital of Vietnam. The most recent investigation in 4 villages showed about more than 50 % of groundwater samples contained As concentrations exceeding 50 g/L (the WHO and Vietnamese standard). In particular, in Son Dong villages, 58 % of samples analyzed contained As concentrations higher than 200 g/L. Good correlations were found in As concentrations in water and hair and urine of peoples in corresponding families, suggesting the chronic exposure to As by people living in As-contaminated ground water areas. In Son Dong village, As levels in hair (mean: 1.7 mg/kg dry wt) and urine (g/g creatinine) exceeding the reference values recommended by WHO, suggesting potential for human risk posed by long term accumulation of As in human body. Future studies should be focused on the time trends of POPs and EDCs in biota in Vietnam in order to predict future trend of contamination and to reveal new clues for understanding possible toxic impacts on aquatic organisms. The issues of arsenic contamination in groundwater and their chronic toxic implications on human health should be systematically investigated in the future.
