  • If roads, bridges, buildings, etc. are built on the ground with soft clay or organic soil, there may be a lot of problems in geotechnical engineering such as settlement and stability due to the large settlement and lack of bearing capacity. In extreme cases, it may appear due to shear failure or collapse of the constructed structure, so a ground improvement method is indispensable to increase the strength of the ground and to suppress settlement. In this study, the settlement according to each groundwater level condition was analyzed using the measurement results for the groundwater level conditions, one of the important factors in predicting the settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, and the groundwater level conditions applied to the settlement analysis were proposed by comparing it with settlement generated 5 years after construction. As a result of the analysis, it is judged that it is reasonable to apply the measured groundwater level during construction and the low water ordinary neap tide (L.W.O.N.T) during load application for the groundwater level in the settlement analysis. In addition, in the case of the dredged and reclaimed ground, it is estimated that the water pressure acting on the clay layer is nonlinear, as the result of the observations of the head of water at the observation points above and below the in-situ clay layer were different.

  • Purpose: The area such as historic sites where distributed in the hills surrounded by the mountains in the past, if heavy rains occur, soil that distributed in the substructure of a sedimentary layer's permeability decreases therefore, water do not smoothly drainage and increases surface structures' moisture content. Therefore, many phenomena occur such as the muddy ground. This experiment tried to figure out the cause of poor drainage, predicting poor drainage system when rainfall occur. So not only the base of cultural properties distributed in the historic site, but also have big influences on the upper structure. Method: We are going to propose an improvement plan through the various sites exploration and the field permeability test. In addition, analyze interrelationship to figure out the cause of the poor drainage through monitoring under ground water. Conclusion: As the result of the experiment, the cause of the poor drainage system formed on shallow depth of ground level inside of a land. We can see that soil of surface and fill deposit permeability was in poor condition. Therefore, it was in very inappropriate hydrogeological condition when surface water permeate into the underground when rainfall occurs.

  • Various surface grinding experiments using resin bonded diamond abrasive wheels are carried out for tungsten carbide materials in order to minimize the damage on the ground surface and to purse the precise dimension compared to conventional grinding machine. When grinding quality is constant, theoretical grinding effect is changed according to the speed of workpiece. Accordingly, grinding forces, which are Fn, Ft, were analyzed for the machining processes of tungsten-carbide material to obtain optimum grinding conditions. Brief investigation is carried out to decrease the dressing efficiency of resinoid bonded diamond grinding wheel to grind tungsten-carbide. Truing is also carried out to provide a desired shape on a wheel or to correct a dulled profile. High quality in dimensional accuracy and surface are often required as a structural components, therefore 3-points bending test is carried out to check machining damage on the ground surface layer, which in one of sintered brittle material. From this experimental study, some useful machining data and information to determine proper machining condition for grinding of tungsten-carbide materials are obtained.

  • Through numerical experiment using simplified OSU-1D PBL(Oregon State University One-Dimensional Planetary Boundary Layer) model and field measurement, we studied the impacts of vegetation canopy on heat island that was one of the characteristics of local climaate in urban area. it was found that if the fraction of vegetation was extended by 10 percent, the maximum air temperature and the maximum ground temperature can come down about 0.9${\circ}C$, 2.3${\circ}C$, respectively. Even though the field measurement was done under a little unstable atmospheric condition, the canopy air temperature was lower in the daytime, and higher at night than the air and ground temperature. This result suggests that the extention of vegetation canopy can bring about more pleasant local climate by causing the oasis, the shade and the blanket effect.

  • Construction of high-speed concrete track embankments over soft ground needs many of the ground improvement techniques. Drains, surcharge loading, and geosynthetic reinforcement, have all been used to solve the settlement and embankment stability issues associated with construction on soft soils. However, when time constraints are critical to the success of the project, another measures should be considered. Especially, since the design criteria of residual settlement is limited as 30mm for concrete track embankment, it is very difficult to satisfy this allowable settlement by using the former construction method. Pile net method consist of vertical columns that are designed to transfer the load of the embankment through the soft compressible soil layer to a firm foundation and one or more layers of geosynthetic reinforcement placed between the top of the columns and the bottom of the embankment. In this paper, three cases with different embankment height and number of geosynthetic reinforcement, were studied through FEM analysis for efficient use of pile net method.

  • Recent increase of large scale construction near costal area has also increased the application of soft ground treatment. As a result, solidification with cement and lime which increases stability and durability of soils, is frequently used for surface layer stabilization in soft ground site. While stabilization of very soft clay with high plasticity and compressibility has widely been studied, studies on silty clay with low plasticity and compressibility are relatively rare. In this study, after stabilizing low plasticity silty clay of Songdo area with cement and lime under various water contents, mixing ratio, and curing time, uniaxial compression test and plate load test were performed. Strength properties from both tests were considerably consistent. And trackability of construction equipment on the treated surface layer of dredged land was estimated. Finally, optimum mixing condition for Songdo silty clay was proposed.

  • Purpose: The consolidation settlement of soft ground is dependent on the distribution of pore water pressure which is also affected by hydraulic conductivities (boundary condition) of layers, thickness of clayey soil layer and surcharge. Results: However, the current consolidation analyses are mostly based on Terzaghi's consolidation theory that assumes the initial pore water pressure ratio with depth to be constant. In this study, numerical analysis are carried out to investigate the variation of pore water pressure dissipation with depth and thickness of clayey soil layer, time, surcharge as well as drainage conditions. Conclusion: Comparative study with Terzaghi's consolidation theory is also conducted. The result shows that Terzaghi's consolidation theory should be used with caution unless it is ideally corresponded to the isochrone.

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the improvements in the strength and injection range of loose ground after injecting $CaCO_3$(created by microorganism reaction). For this purpose, three cases of single-layer (Sand, SP, SW) specimens were made in a 150mm D ${\times}$ 200mm H space and two cases of multi-layer specimens (SW/SP, SP/SW) were made in a 150mm D ${\times}$ 300mm H space. The specimens were made with a relative density of 30% of soft ground and an injection was given over a time of one day. The uniaxial compression strength was measured with a cone penetrometer and the injection range was observed by checking the bulb formation around the injection nozzle. Also, the compositions of the specimens were assessed through XRD analyses. Based on the test results, a compressive strength of 500kPa and 15cm thick cementation were noted due to the cementation of the soil. This implies that there are significant effects of the pore condition and size on bio-grouting technology.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the change of soil characteristics effect on the condition of urban forest in Sasang parti located near Sasang Industrial Complex. The results of this study are as follows; 1. Soil hardness is increasing from the area of forest, to the entrance, to facilities in that order. Soil acidity pH4.19∼4.23 in Sasang park indicated a high acidity condition. High levers of K, Na, Mg, Ca are shown in the areas composed of high soil hardness. 2. Pinus thunbergii in the overstory tree layer, Alnus japonica in the understory tree layer, and Rhus sylvestris in the shurb layer are shown respectively as dominant species based on the ground survey and the compution of important value. Pinus thunbergii is decreasing, while Alnus japonica and increasing. 3. Oplismenus undulatifolius which has a strong tolerance for air pollution, is shown as a dominant species of herbaceous plants in Sasang park. There are 10 species of Harbaceous in Sasang park compared to 20 species in Molundae park. This shows that deversity in herbaceous plants are imported by air pollution. 4. Species diversity indices of Sasang park is 0.8738∼0.9700 compared to 1.0817∼ 1.233 in Molundae park is due to the good condition of soil environment in addition to air pollution effects. 5. The vitality of Pinus thunbergii is 16.41∼20.42ER in Sasang park, and 12.42∼ 16.81ER, in Molundae park. This shows that tree vitality are impacted by soil characteristics. The regression analysis between tree vitality and soil environment shows the effects of is soil hardness, soil moisture, soil acidity, K, Na, Mg, Ca.

  • The unbalance currents flow the High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) power cable caused by asymmetrical fault, harmonic distortion and unbalanced load. That problem causes additional loss and leakage field in the HTS power cable, and deteriorates the electric power quality and stability. In addition, large amounts of unbalanced current can cause negative sequence and ground relays to operate. This paper presents an analysis unbalanced three-phase current distribution in HTS power cable caused by unbalanced load condition and grounding methods using PSCAD/EMTDC. The results obtained through the analysis would provide important data for the design of HTS power cables and valid information for their installation in power system.
