  • We compared relative importance of thermal conductivity and initial ground temperature in designing borehole heat exchanger network and also we test accuracy of ground temperature estimation in thermal response test using a proven 3-D T-H modeler. The effect of error in estimating ground temperature on calculated total length of borehole heat exchanger was more than 3 times larger than the case of thermal conductivity in maximum 20% error range. Considering 10% of error in estimating thermal conductivity is generally acceptable, we have to define the initial ground temperature within 5% confidence level. Utilizing the mean annual ground surface temperature and the geothermal gradient map compiled so far can be a economic way of estimating ground temperature with some caution. When performing thermal response test for estimating ground temperature as well as measuring thermal conductivity, minimum 100 minutes of ambient circulation is required, which should be even more in case of very cold and hot seasons.

  • Accurate information on the ground surface temperature is essential for design of a borehole heat exchanger and thus ensuring the performance of a ground source heat pump system along with knowledge on thermal diffusivity and conductivity of ground. In this study we analyzed the shallow subsurface temperature monitoring data of 58 Korea Meteorological Administration synoptic stations. As a result, we compiled mean annual ground surface temperature distribution map using multiple regression analysis of the monitoring data.

  • This paper presents the heating performance analysis results of a heat pump system using a dual heat source. In this paper, a dual heat source refers to the ground-coupled heat exchanger using both a surface water heat exchanger (SWHE) and a vertical ground heat exchanger (VGHE). In order to evaluate the system performance, we installed a monitoring system to measure the temperature and power consumption of a heat pump and then collected operation data with 4 different load burdened ratios of the dual heat source heat exchanger. During the whole measurement period, the average heating capacity of a water-to-water heat pump unit was 37.3 kW. In addition, the compressor of the heat pump consumed 9.4 kW of power, while the circulating pump of the dual heat source heat exchanger used 6.7 kW of power. Therefore the average heating coefficient of performance (COP) for the heat pump unit was 4.0, while the entire system including the circulating pump was 2.7. Finally, the parallel use of SWHE and VGHE was beneficial to the system performance; however, further researches are needed to optimize the design data for various load ratios of the dual heat source heat exchanger.

  • Ground heat exchanger is the most important part which than 14% of the cost of construction and the performance of Ground heat exchanger is depended on it. Grout is inserted into the hole to the ground fixed and serves to enhance the thermal conductivity. So the research and development is needed. We were using cement grout. The result of the test thermal conductivity is 3.14 W/mK. It is much better than the existing grout is the thermal conductivity. The developed materials was examined by applying the grout in the field.

  • In this study, the thermal conductive characteristics and basic properties of the nine commercial products of bentonite grouts were studied. Six of the nine products for ground heat exchanger systems are imported and others for civil engineering are domestic. The thermal conductivities of all bentonite products are nearly similar among products. The free swell indexes, viscosities and filter losses of the ground heat exchanger grouts are lower than those of the civil engineering ones. These characteristics seem to increase of the fluidity to fill the bentonite slurry to bore-hall perfectly, rather than to prevent underground water penetration. Thus, the mixtures of bentonites and sands are recommended for high thermal conduction grouts.

  • Recently, ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems have attracted much attention, according to the enhanced social demand of renewable energy. GSHP systems can achieve higher coefficient of performance than the conventional air-source heat pump systems by utilizing stable underground temperature. However, the initial cost of GSHP system is higher than that of the conventional systems, especially, in the small-size buildings. Therefore, it is necessary to develop small-size ground heat exchanger with low cost and quick installation. In this study, a unit-type ground heat exchanger was developed and heat exchange rate was calculated by the numerical simulation. As a result, 27.45 W/m of heat exchange rate was acquired in the condition of $0.5m{\times}0.2m{\times}2m$ unit.

  • The temperatures with the ground depth, the positions of circulation water in ground heat exchanger were measured and thermal diffusion characteristics with the distances of the direction normal to the borehole was analysed. The deeper the depth of ground, the less the influences of outdoor temperature, but below 10m of ground, there was no influences of ground temperature. When the depth of trench pipe was below the depth of 2m, there was no influence. In the ground of 10m when the distances between the pipe and the other places were above 0.5m, the variations of temperature were less than $1.6^{\circ}C$ and above 2.5m they were less than $0.1^{\circ}C$. When the distances of bore hole were above 5m, there were no. influences of the nearest ground heat exchanger.

  • Storage and transfer heat in soils are governed by the soil thermal properties and these properties are therefore needed in many engineering applications, including horizontal ground heat exchanger for ground-coupled heat pumps. This paper presents the measured results of the thermal diffusivity of soils(silica, quartzite, limestone, sandstone, and masonry soils) used for the trench backfilling materials of the horizontal ground heat exchanger. To assess this thermal property, we (i) measure the soil thermal conductivities and volumetric heat capacities using dual-probe method and (ii) compare the estimates from the de Vries method of summing the heat capacities of the soil constituents. The results show that the thermal diffusivity tends to increase as dry soil begins to wet, but it approaches a constant value or even decreases as the soil continues to wet. Measurements made by using the dual-probe method agreed well with independent estimates obtained using the single-probe method.

  • Experimental and theoretical analyses were carried out to investigate the heat exchange characteristics of the nutrient solution cooling system utilizing ground water. The material of heat exchanger used in the experiment was polyethylene and the cross-flow type was adapted in which nutrient solution was mixed and ground water unmixed. For the exchanger surface area of 0.33$m^2$ and flow rates of ground water of 1-6$\ell$/min, NTU(number of transfer units) and effectiveness of experimental heat exchanger were 0.1-0.45 and 10-35%, respectively. Therefore these results showed that the hydroponic greenhouse of 1,000$m^2$(300 pyong) with the ground water of 10$m^2$/day could cover about 55-70% of maximum cooling load in summer.

  • This paper reviewed and evaluated some of the commonly used prediction models for thermal conductivity of soils with the experimental data. Semi-theoretical models for two-component materials were found inappropriate to estimate the thermal conductivity of dry state soils. It came out that the model developed by Cote and Konrad gave the best overall prediction results for unsaturated soils available in the literature. However, it still needs to be improved to cover a wider range of soil types and degrees of saturation. In the present study, parametric analysis is also conducted to investigate the effect of soil type and moisture content on the horizontal ground heat exchanger design. The analysis shows that horizontal ground heat exchanger pipe length is reduced with the increase of soil thermal conductivity and water content. The calculation results also show that horizontal ground heat exchanger size can be reduced to a certain extent by using backfilling material with a higher thermal conductivity of solid particles.
