  • This study attempts to find optimal conditions of the friction coefficient using a discrete element method (DEM) simulation with various friction coefficient conditions and three different grinding media with various ball sizes in a traditional ball mill (TBM). Using ball motion of the DEM simulation are obtained using the optimal friction coefficient compared with actual motion; photographs are taken by the digital camera and the snapshot images are analyzed. In the simulation, the rotation speed of the mill, the materials and velocity of the grinding media, and the friction coefficient between the balls and the wall of the pot are fixed as the actual experimental conditions. We observe the velocity according to the friction coefficient from the DEM simulation. The friction coefficient is found to increase with the velocity. Milling experiments using a traditional ball mill with the same experimental conditions as those of the DEM simulation are conducted to verify the simulated results. In addition, particle morphology change of copper powder is investigated and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the milling experiment.

  • The objective of this research was to improve moisture retention capacity of pine bark. To achieve this, barks were ground with Wiley mill of hammer mill and were blended with recycled rockwool. Then, changes of soil physical properties were determined. The percentage of particles larger than 5.6 mm was 86.5% in raw materials. The percentage of particles larger than 1 mm decreased and those of particles smaller than 1 mm increased by grinding with Wiley mill or hammer mill. Grinding with Wiley mill showed better effect than those of hammer mill in decreasing particle size distribution. Grinding resulted in decreased total porosity (TP) and air space (AS) and increased container capacity (CC) and residual water content (RW), indication improved moisture retention capacity. The material ground with Wiley mill, than blended with 50% recycled rockwool had 81.1%, 67.7%, 13.5% and 235 ml in TP, CC, AS and RW, respectively. These results indicated that moisture retention capacity was improved by blending with recycled rockwood, but aeration of root media was much better than those of peat+vermiculite(1:1, v/v), which is commonly used in commercial production.

  • In this study, we investigated the physicochemical properties of coffee brews according to coffee bean grinding grade. We also examined the effect of grinding grade on amounts of volatile flavor compounds. Coffee brew samples were separated using standard sieves (with pore sizes of 850, 600, and $425{\mu}m$), making particle sizes of ground beans as follows: whole bean (control), $850{\mu}m$ or more (coarse), $850{\sim}600{\mu}m$ (medium), $600{\sim}425{\mu}m$ (fine), and $425{\mu}m$ or less (very fine). For each particle size category, pH, total acidity, brown color intensity, chromaticity, total phenolic content, caffeine content, chlorogenic acid content, and total amounts of volatile flavor compounds generated were compared and analyzed. As grinding grade decreased, pH and brown color intensity increased from 4.84 to 5.18 and from 0.257 to 0.284, respectively, whereas total acidity decreased from 0.31 to 0.17%. As grinding grade decreased, the $L^*$ and $a^*$ color values decreased; however, $L^*$ value did not exhibit a significant difference depending on the grinding grade. The $b^*$ value was 15.75 in the very fine size category, which showed the highest yellowness. There was an 11 or higher color difference between the control and ground coffee powder, indicating a remarkable color difference. The total phenolic, caffeine, and chlorogenic acid contents of the coffee brewed from ground beans with a very fine size were 4.54 mg gallic acid equivalent/mL, $733.0{\mu}g/mL$, and $383.7{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, which were high values. The total amounts of volatile compounds in the very fine size category were found to be greater than 100 mg/kg. In this study, we suggest the basis for coffee quality evaluation, which involves evaluating changes in the physicochemical properties and amounts of flavor compounds of coffee relative to the grinding grade of the beans (basic step of coffee extraction).

  • Recently high speed mixer, which is mixing, grinding, dispersion for liquid-liquid material, has been widely used several industries such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, electronic material. This high speed mixer has a core element part called particle separation device. Particle separation device, which makes mixed liquid and liquid material using shear forces from a rotor and a stator, is a decisive factor in the distributed parts. In this study, we examined the velocity distribution of the two models of particle separation device using computation fluid dynamics, so that we were able to see the difference of the velocity distribution according to the shape. Also, by experiment, we observed that the use of rotor-screen type is deemed more suitable in case of accurately considering the effect of improving of the dispersibility through the circulation of the future.

  • The effect of the glue solution were investigated in the grinding and elutriation process for manufacturing of White clay pigment. In grinding process, glue solution decreased the production of a too fine powder and enhanced the degree of sorting of ground pigments. The grinding performance and limit are generally influenced by the frictional force. Therefore, the friction force was measured in accordance with the grinding conditions. As a result of measuring a friction force, when using glue solution it showed the lowest friction. Finally, the application of glue solution in grinding process is believed to enhance the degree of sorting of ground pigments by reducing frictional force. In elutriation process, the application of glue solution enabled the screening of larger particles in the same conditions by reducing the sedimentation velocity. This result is due to increase in the viscosity of the glue solution according to glue concentration. As a result, the application of glue solution in elutriation process is though to enlarges the range of the selectable particle size and to enable the segmentation of the particles.

  • Authors Investigated the particulate size distribution in work environment of Banwol and Changwon industry complex. Size distributions of particles exposured to workers in welding and in grounding process were evaluated by personal cascade impactors. Personal air samplers with personal cascade impactor were attached to the workers. The mass median diameter measured in welding sites were 0.3 to 3.BUm and in grinding sites were 1.5 to 2.6htn. Respirable matter fractions were ranged 32.67 to 65.055. Respirable matter fractions were calculated from the sixte distribution data by the respirable particle mass of the ACGIH criteria. The study relating to characteristics of particle of other industries and particulate sixte distribution is more needed in the near future

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of surface treatments on shear bond strength of resin composite bonded to thermocycled and non-thermocycled CAD/CAM resin-ceramic hybrid materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 120 specimens ($10{\times}10{\times}2mm$) from each material were divided into 12 groups according to different surface treatments in combination with thermal aging procedures. Surface treatment methods were airborne-particle abrasion (abraded with 50 micron alumina particles), dry grinding (grinded with $125{\mu}m$ grain size bur), and hydrofluoric acid (9%) and silane application. According to the thermocycling procedure, the groups were assigned as non-thermocycled, thermocycled after packing composites, and thermocycled before packing composites. The average surface roughness of the non-thermocycled specimens were measured after surface treatments. After packing composites and thermocycling procedures, shear bond strength (SBS) of the specimens were tested. The results of surface roughness were statistically analyzed by 2-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and SBS results were statistically analyzed by 3-way ANOVA. RESULTS. Surface roughness of GC were significantly lower than that of LU and VE (P<.05). The highest surface roughness was observed for dry grinding group, followed by airborne particle abraded group (P<.05). Comparing the materials within the same surface treatment method revealed that untreated surfaces generally showed lower SBS values. The values of untreated LU specimens showed significantly different SBS values compared to those of other surface treatment groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. SBS was affected by surface treatments. Thermocycling did not have any effect on the SBS of the materials except acid and silane applied GC specimens, which were subjected to thermocycling before packing of the composite resin.

  • In this study, a method of shear crushing and a two-stage disk mill were introduced to grind the waste tire powder. Rubber chips with various size were obtained during the crushing or grinding step. The two-stage disk mill was composed of two drum-type blades rotating at various speed and in opposite directions. Therefore, more roughly surfaced particles of micronized waste tire powder were obtained using shear crushing rather than using conventional cutting crushing. In this study, the shape of shear-crushed waste tire particles was compared with conventional cutting crushing particles by scanning electron microscope. In addition, the particle size analyzer was employed to determine the appropriate particle size of waste ground tire powders obtained in this study.

  • The Sericite Powder W3S Comminuted in 1 M $KNO_3$solution for 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 h, compared with the addition of distilled water. It has been found that the mean diameter of the ground particles decreases until the comminuting for 1 h, however, increases after 1 h due to the agglomeration between fine particles. The sericite powder comminuted with 1 M $KNO_3$solution for 1 h shows the mean particle size of $1.9\mu$m, and it also shows the mean particle size of 2.4 $\mu$m in case of comminution in distilled water for 1 h.

  • In swine production, efficiency of utilization of nutrients is imperative. By embracing advances in processing techniques(i.e., fine grinding, pelleting, steam flaking, roasting, extrusion and expanding) nutrient utilization of feeds turfs have greatly improved. Grinding is by far the most commonly used process with reduction of particle size, Expander, like extruders, are high-temperature and pressure-short-term processor. The purpose of using an expander is to improve pellet quality. Also, expanding of dietary ingredients indicates improvements in growth performance and nutrient digestibility. Because feed cost are easily the greatest economic input into swine production, maximizing nutrient utilization is an area that will continue to receive much attention. Therefore, much attention will continue to be placed on feed processing techniques that will give consistent improvements in animal performance and nutrient digestibility.
