A Study on the Shape of Section in Member and Stress Tolerant Structural System in the Frame of Green Houses (내재해성이 우수한 비닐하우스 부재의 단면형상 및 구조시스템에 관한 연구)

  • The damage of greenhouse has been increasing due to frequent collapse of frame in greenhouse caused by the heavy snow and strong wind. But, greenhouses are constructed by steel tube members of pipe style and pin connection of them, so these greenhouses are very weak. Therefore, this study was carried out to find the type of member section and structural frame system in stress tolerant greenhouses. The modeling types for analysis were designed in accordance with structural frame configuration and member section in greenhouse. These types of models, which are existing type, diagrid type, symmetric and asymmetric section type of frame member in greenhouse were classified. Displacement analysis varying the vertical and horizontal loads for a series of models was carried out. As a result of this paper, it was verified that the structural frame configuration of diagrid type and asymmetric type of member section is better than existing type in the frame of greenhouses against snow loads and wind loads.

  • In this study, we quantitatively compare the cooling effects of single span plastic greenhouses by opening or shutting of toot and side vents, and operation of fan or sprinkler. With those variables, we simultaneously made experiments at 4 greenhouses under equivalent conditions. By the experiments, the shutting of roof and side vents caused the high temperature difference of indoor and outdoor which the crops cannot be cultivated. However, the opening of the windows effectively reduced the indoor temperature and showed uniform temperature distribution in the greenhouses. The sprinkler abruptly reduced the indoor temperature, and showed excellent cooling effects. Finally, this paper provides the fundamental data for environmental control in greenhouses.

  • The collapsing accidents of pipe greenhouses in the farmhouse have been increased duo to heavy snow load. However, the study on exact structure analysis to prevent the collapse of pipe greenhouses is rare and the damage of the farmhouse is annually repeated. The method of existing structure analysis is basically made of linear elastic analysis based on the micro displacement. But the actual stiffness of the pipe greenhouse is significantly weaker than the stiffness of buildings and the load acting on the greenhouses gets to become relatively bigger. It means that the geometry shape of greenhouses changes so that the relation of strain-displacement gets to indicate a nonlinear behavior. Therefore, this study is performed to evaluate the structural safety so as to prevent the collapse of pipe greenhouses, which are the single-span greenhouse(farmhouse guidance shape, G) and multi-span greenhouse(farmhouse supply shape, 1-2W), by performing the large-displacement analysis considering nonlinear effects.

Identification and Characteristics of Mushrooms Grown in Vegetable Greenhouses (채소 온실에서 발생한 버섯의 동정 및 특성)

  • Unusual mushrooms were observed in strawberry and sweet pepper greenhouses in the Hwasun area of Korea in September 2015. The mushrooms usually grew on beds in the greenhouses, frequently along with vegetables. The identity of the mushrooms in the greenhouses and effects of the mushrooms on the growth and quality of vegetables were investigated. Mushroom specimens collected were identified based on their morphological and molecular characteristics. The mushroom specimens collected from the strawberry greenhouse were identified as Leucocoprinus birnbaumii and L. ianthinus, and those from the sweet pepper greenhouse as Gymnopilus lepidotus. These were the first observations of L. ianthinus and G. lepidotus in Korea. The results revealed that the mushrooms originated from coco peat media used for the beds in the greenhouses. The mushrooms did not affect the growth and quality of the two vegetables.

  • LFG-MGT CHP system development project with $CO_2$ enrichment in greenhouses was introduced. LFG is produced from the anaerobic digestion of landfilled waste and it has been utilized for power/heat generation since it contains around 50% of $CH_4$. Utilization of LFG from small scale landfill is also needed as well as large scale landfill. However, due to economy of scale, it is very difficult to develop business model. In this context, combining CHP system with greenhouses is considered as feasible option for LFG utilization. LFG-MGT CHP system with $CO_2$ fixation in greenhouses has been derived as an active greenhouse gas reduction strategy, The focus of the system is beyond carbon neutral LFG utilization to neutral carbon absorption. The system is feasible in terms of direct and indirect $CO_2$ emission reduction with more economical way.

  • In Korean agriculture, an automatic environment control system for greenhouse is essential to save labor and to increase the quality of products. The existing environment monitoring systems have weighed on greenhouse growers and researchers because of their high cost and difficult applications. Many sensors are widely used for monitoring the greenhouse environment, but most of commercial sensors are expensive and not suitable for use in greenhouses. Thus , the development of an environment monitoring system for exclusive use in greenhouses is essential . The objective of this study was to develop modular environment monitoring systems, which are low-cost , reliable and easy -to -use. The results showed that the sensors for indoor and outdoor environments and nutrient solution had the ranges and accuracies appropriate for use in greenhouses. Also the modular environment systems developed showed a satisfactory performance in terms of stability and reliability in the measurement and acquisition of the greenhouse environment data.

A Study on the Standard Durable Years of Pipe Framed Greenhouses (파이프 골조 온실 구조물의 표준내용연수 연구)

  • In designing the greenhouse structures, snow and wind loads must be estimated on the basis of the probability of occurrence of snow or wind storms of a given intensity. The recurrence interval chosen depends on the standard durable years and safety factors of the greenhouse. This study was carried out to find the standard durable years of pipe framed greenhouses. Bend test for metallic materials was conducted on samples of galvanized steel pipes being used in greenhouse frames. A secular change of collapse loads and flexural rigidity for galvanized steel pipes were analyzed with the parts buried in the ground and exposed in the atmosphere. From those experimental results and corrosion rate of galvanized film, the standard durable years for pipe framed greenhouses are estimated as follows ; the small scale pipe houses of movable type is 7∼8 years and the large scale pipe houses of fixed type is 14∼15 years.

A Study on the Development of Stress Tolerant Structural Systems in the Frame of Built-up Greenhouses (내재해형 조립 비닐하우스 골조 구조시스템 개발 연구)

  • The collapsing accidents of greenhouse frames have been increased yearly due to strong wind and heavy snow, but as it was, there were few studies about the structural safety of greenhouses. Therefore, this study was carried out to develop the stress tolerant structural frame systems in built-up greenhouses. The vertical loading experiment of developed scale models were implemented and the developed types of models were simulated by 3-D analysis program in this study. These types of models, which are existing type and honeycomb type, in arch and standard style frames were classified. As a result of this study, it was verified that the honeycomb type model of arch style frame is better than the existing type model of it in stress resistance against snow load and wind load.

Damping-off of Fischer's Ragwort Caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-2-2 (IIIB)

  • In July 2019, damping-off symptoms of young Fischer's ragwort (Ligularia fischeri) plants were observed in four vinyl greenhouses of a farmer located in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. This disease occurred in 20-30% of plants in the vinyl greenhouses investigated. Nine isolates of Rhizoctonia sp. were obtained from the diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-2-2 (IIIB), based on morphological, cultural characteristics, and anastomosis test. Three isolates were used for artificial inoculation test on Fischer's ragwort. Pathogenicity of these isolates was confirmed on the plants with the inoculation tests. Damping-off symptoms observed on the inoculated plants were similar to those observed in the diseased plants in the vinyl greenhouses. This is the first report of R. solani AG-2-2 (IIIB) being the causative agent in damping-off in Fischer's ragwort.

Phytophthora Foot Rot of Wasabi Caused by Phytophthora pseudocryptogea

  • In June 2021, foot rot symptoms were observed in wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) plants growing in vinyl greenhouses of the Alpine Agricultural Experiment Station, Wild Vegetable Research Institute, in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. Diseased plants displayed black soft rot of crowns and petioles at the soil line and wilted. The incidence of diseased plants was 2-10% in four out of five vinyl greenhouses investigated. Eight fungal isolates were obtained from diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Phytophthora pseudocrytogea based on their morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. Three isolates of P. pseudocrytogea were used for pathogenicity test on wasabi plants via artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed in the inoculated wasabi plants. The symptoms shown by the inoculated plants were similar to those observed in plants from the investigated vinyl greenhouses. This is the first report of P. pseudocryptogea causing Phytophthora foot rot in wasabi.
