High Forage Yielding and Good Silage Quality of a New Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Cultivar 'Dachung' (조사료 수량이 높고 사일리지 품질이 우수한 청보리 신품종 '다청')

  • A new barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar 'Dachung' having high forage yielding and good silage quality was developed at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2015. This cultivar was derived from a cross of the 'Sunwoo' and 'Keunalbori1ho' in 2002. And it's promising line showed both high yield and lodging resistance through the preliminary and advanced yield trials(PYT, AYT) at Iksan from 2010 to 2012. It was designated as the 'Iksan479'. 'Iksan479' was conducted to regional yield trials(RYT) in six locations around Korea for three years from 2013 to 2015. And it was released as the name of 'Dachung'. It has erect plant type, growth habit of IV and green leaf. In the paddy field its heading date was April 24 and maturing date was May 26, same day with 'Youngyang'. Plant height of 'Dachung' was 99cm. Dachung's spikes per $m^2$ was 625. It has high rate of leaf blades, resistance to BaYMV(Barley Yellow Mosiac Virus) and better winter hardiness than that of 'Youngyang'. The average dry matter of 'Dachung' was about $11.9ton\;ha^{-1}$ in paddy field. And average feed quality of 'Dachung' was 9.0% of crude protein content, 31.3% of ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber), 54.4% of NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber), 64.0% of TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients). 'Dachung' had grade I of silage quality. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.

A New Whole Crop Barley Cultivar 'Younghan' with Good Quality, Resistance to Lodging and Viral Disease and High-Yielding (양질 내병 내도복 다수성 청보리 품종 '영한')

  • 'Younghan' (Hordeum vulgare L.), a winter barley for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration in 2008. It was derived from a cross between $F_1$['YB3433-3B-5'/'YB3135-3B-2-3'] and 'YB3135-3B-2-3'. 'SB971305-B-B-B-4-4' line was selected for its earliness, resistance to disease and good agronomic characteristics. The promising line showed both high yield and lodging resistance in the yield trials in Iksan in 2004 to 2005, and designated as 'Iksan420'. The line was subsequently evaluated for winter hardiness, earliness, and yield at eight locations throughout Korea for two years from 2007 to 2008 and finally named as 'Younghan'. It has the growth habit of IV, erect plant type, green leaf and thick culm in diameter. Its heading date was April 24, and the maturing date was May 25 in paddy field conditions, which were one day earlier than those of the check cultivar 'Youngyang'. The cultivar 'Younghan' had better winter hardiness, and resistance to lodging and BaYMV than those of the check cultivar did. The average forage dry matter yield of 'Younghan' was approximately 12.0 MT/ha in adapted region. 'Younghan' also showed 8.5% of crude protein content, 27.2% of ADF, and 67.1% of TDN, including higher grade of silage quality for whole crop barley. This cultivar would be suitable for (area with daily minimum temperature in January) above $-8^{\circ}C$ in Korean peninsula.

A New Early-Heading and High-Yielding Forage Rye Variety, 'Dagreen' (조숙 다수성 청예 조사료용 호밀 신품종 '다그린')

  • 'Dagreen' (Scale cereal L.), a new rye variety was developed from the open pollination among 10 rye lines at the National Institute of Crop Science in 1995 and mass selection were made at National Institute of Crop Science from 1996 to 1999. Recurrent selections were made at Dept. Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA from 2000 to 2006. This new variety has erect plant type with medium size pale green leaves. The number of spike per $m^2$ was 713 and the plant height was 103cm. The heading date of 'Dagreen' was April 24 which was 7 days earlier than that of "Koolgrazer". It was adaptable for forage use at an early stage as a whole crop. Lodging resistance was higher than that of check variety 'Koolgrazer'. The chemical components and quality of forage showed 10.2 % crude protein, 36.6 % ADF, 62.4 % NDF and 59.9 % TDN. 'Dagreen' showed high resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust than those of check variety in the field condition. The average dry matter (7,010kg $ha^{-1}$) of 'Dagreen' harvested at April 28 were 6 % higher than 'Koolgrazer'. This variety is recommended for all of the rye cultivation area in Korea.

A New Sweetpotato Cultivar for Use of Bioethanol 'Daeyumi' (바이오에탄올용 고구마 신품종 '대유미')

  • A new sweetpotato variety, 'Daeyumi', was developed by Bioenergy Crop Research Center, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2008. This variety was obtained from the cross between 'Jinhongmi' and 'Xusju 18' in 2000. The seedling and line selections were performed from 2001 to 2003, preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2004 to 2005, and the regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2006 to 2008. 'Daeyumi' has cordate leaf, green vine and petiole, elliptic storage root, red skin and yellow flesh color of storage root. This variety is also resistant to Fusarium wilt and nematode. The starch value was 25.9%, ethanol yield was 418 L/Ton, which was 7% higher than that of 'Yulmi' variety, and the total sugar content was 2.47 g/100g, dry weight. 'Daeyumi's initial temperature of starch gelatinization was lower, 76.2$^{\circ}C$, and the retrogradation process was earlier than 'Yulmi'. The average yield of storage root was 27.8 ton/ha in the regional yield trials, which was 36% higher than that of 'Yulmi' variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 3.0, and the average weight of one storage root was 152 gram. This variety can be used for the production of bioethanol and starch processing.

'Youho', A New Forage Barley Cultivar with Ruminant-Palatable Hood Spike Type and Non-Scatteredness (가축 기호성이 높은 내탈립 삼차망 청보리 신품종 '유호')

  • 'Youho' (Hordeum vulgare L.), a new ruminant-palatable forage barley cultivar, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2008. It was derived from the cross between 'Suwon339' and 'Suwon355'. Among the cross made in 1999, a promising line, SB992047-B-B-B-6-2, showed good characteristics in potential forage yield in the yield trial tested at Iksan from 2005 to 2006. In 2007, it was designated as 'Iksan431' and placed in regional yield trials at eight locations in Korea for two years from 2007 to 2008, and was released as the name of 'Youho'. It has the growth habit of group II, erect plant type, green leaf and hood spike. Its average heading and maturing dates were on Apr. 24 and May 26, respectively, which are similar to check cultivar 'Yuyeon'. 'Youho' also showed weaker winter hardiness, but better resistance to lodging, shattering and BaYMV than those of check cultivar. It showed higher crude protein content, grade of silage quality than those of check cultivar. The average forage dry matter yield in the regional yield trial was about 14.1, $10.9MT\;ha^{-1}$ in upland and paddy field, respectively, which were 1% to 4% lower than that of the check cultivar. This cultivar would be suitable for the area whose daily minimum temperature was above $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.

A New Purple Sweetpotato Cultivar for Table Use 'Yeonjami' (식용 자색고구마 신품종 '연자미')

  • 'Yeonjami' is a new sweetpotato variety developed for table use by Bioenergy Crop Research Center, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2008. This variety was selected from the cross between 'Ayamurasakki' and 'Poly Cross' in 2000, and seedling and line selections were practiced from 2001 to 2003. Preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2004 to 2005. The regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2006 to 2008. 'Yeonjami' has cordate leaf, green vine and petiole, long elliptic storage root, purple skin and light purple flesh color of storage root. The average yield of storage root was 25.9 ton/ha in the regional yield trials, which was 15% higher than that of 'Sinjami' variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 2.9, and the average weight of one storage root was 153 gram. This variety was partly-resistant to Fusarium wilt and nematode. In addition, steamed 'Yeonjami' has higher polyphenol contents as 139.6 mg/100 g and higher biological activities as, which may improve the bioactivity in human.

  • A new barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar 'Mihan' having ruminant-palatable semi-smooth awn and good silage quality was developed at National Institute of Crop Science(NICS), RDA in 2016. This cultivar was derived from a cross of the 'SB00T2064' and 'Suwon385' in 2001. And its promising line showed high yielding through the preliminary yield trials(PYT) and advanced yield trials (AYT) in Iksan from 2012 to 2013. It was designated as the 'Iksan487'. 'Iksan487' was conducted to regional yield trials (RYT) in one upland field and five paddy fields around Korea for three years from 2014 to 2016. And it was released as the name of 'Mihan'. It has growth habit of IV, erect plant type, green leaf and semi-smooth awn. Its heading date was April 23 in the paddy field and maturing date was May 24. Plant height of 'Mihan' was 96cm. Mihan's spikes per $m^2$ was 665. It has better winter hardiness and resistance to BaYMV (Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus) than that of barley cultivar 'Youngyang'. The average dry matter of 'Mihan' was about $10.9ton\;ha^{-1}$ in paddy field. And average feed quality of 'Mihan' was 10.3% of crude protein content, 26.1% of ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber), 46.9 % of NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) and 68.2% of TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients). 'Mihan' had grade I of silage quality. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum average temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.

An Early-Maturing and High-Biomass Tetraploid Rye (Secale cereale L.) Variety 'Daegokgreen' for Forage Use (조생 다수성 조사료용 4배체 호밀 '대곡그린')

  • A winter forage tetraploid rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivar, 'Daegokgreen', was developed at the Department of Central Area Crop Science, NICS, RDA in 2016. The mutant line 'CG11003-8-B', which was induced from rye cultivar 'Gogu' (diploid) by colchicine treatment, was selected for its excellent agronomic performance and was placed in preliminary yield trials for one year, 2013. The line was designated "Homil59" and was tested for regional yield trials at the four locations in Korea from 2014 to 2016. Finally, the new cultivar was named as the 'Daegokgreen' (grant number 8274). The leaf of cultivar 'Daegokgreen' is wide, long and dark-green color. The cultivar also has a big-size grain with light-brown color. The heading date of cultivar 'Daegokgreen' was April 17 which was 2 days later than that of check cultivar 'Gogu'. The tolerance to cold and wet injury, and resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust of the new cultivar were similar to those of the check cultivar but the resistance to the lodging of the new cultivar was stronger than that of the check. The average roughage fresh and dry matter yield of the new cultivar after 10 days from heading were 37.0 and 7.7 MT ha-1, respectively, which were similar to those (38.4 and 8.0 MT ha-1) of the check cultivar. The roughage quality of 'Daegokgreen' was higher in crude protein content (8.9%) than that of the check cultivar (7.9%), while was similar to the check in total digestible nutrients (56.9%). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing forage crops at all of crop cultivation areas in Korea.

  • KHNP's shared growth activities are based on such public good. Reflecting the characteristics of a comprehensive energy company, a high-tech plant company, and a leading company for shared growth, it presents strategies to link performance indicators with its partners and implements various measures. Key tasks include maintaining the nuclear power plant ecosystem, improving management conditions for partner companies, strengthening future capabilities of the nuclear power plant industry, and supporting a virtuous cycle of regional development. This is made by reflecting the specificity of nuclear power generation as much as possible, and is designed to reflect the spirit of shared growth through win-win and cooperation in order to solve the challenges of the times while considering the characteristics as much as possible as possible. KHNP's shared growth activities can be said to be the practice of the spirit of the times(Zeitgeist). The spirit of the times given to us now is that companies should strive for sustainable growth as social air. KHNP has been striving to establish a creative and leading shared growth ecosystem. In particular, considering the positions of partners, it has been promoting continuous system improvement to establish a fair trade culture and deregulation. In addition, it has continuously discovered and implemented new customized support projects that are effective for partner companies and local communities. To this end, efforts have been made for shared growth through organic collaboration with partners and stakeholders. As detailed tasks, it also presents fostering new markets and new industries, maintaining supply chains, and emergency support for COVID-19 to maintain the nuclear power plant ecosystem. This reflects the social public good after the recent COVID-19 incident. In order to improve the management conditions of partner companies, productivity improvement, human resources enhancement, and customized funding are being implemented as detailed tasks. This is a plan to practice win-win growth with partner companies emphasized by corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ISO 26000 while being faithful to the main job. Until now, ESG management has focused on the environmental field to cope with the catastrophe of climate change. According to KHNP is presenting a public enterprise-type model in the environmental field. In order to strengthen the future capabilities of the nuclear power plant industry as a state-of-the-art energy company, it has set tasks to attract investment from partner companies, localization and new technologies R&D, and commercialization of innovative technologies. This is an effort to develop advanced nuclear power plant technology as a concrete practical measure of eco-friendly development. Meanwhile, the EU is preparing a social taxonomy to focus on the social sector, another important axis in ESG management, following the Green Taxonomy, a classification system in the environmental sector. KHNP includes enhancing local vitality, increasing income for the underprivileged, and overcoming the COVID-19 crisis as part of its shared growth activities, which is a representative social taxonomy field.
