  • This paper presents a comparative study on the double-K fracture parameters of concrete obtained using four existing analytical methods such as Gauss-Chebyshev integral method, simplified Green's function method, weight function method and simplified equivalent cohesive force method. Two specimen geometries: three point bend test and compact tension specimen for sizes 100-500 mm at initial notch length to depth ratios 0.25 and 0.4 are used for the comparative study. The required input parameters for determining the double-K fracture parameters are derived from the developed fictitious crack model. It is found that the cohesive toughness and initial cracking toughness determined using weight function method and simplified equivalent cohesive force method agree well with those obtained using Gauss-Chebyshev integral method whereas these fracture parameters determined using simplified Green's function method deviates more than by 11% and 20% respectively as compared with those obtained using Gauss-Chebyshev integral method. It is also shown that all the fracture parameters related with double-K model are size dependent.

  • Ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) is a green construction material used to produce durable concrete. The secondary pozzolanic reactions can result in reduced pore connectivity; therefore, replacing partial amount of Portland cement (PC) with GGBS can significantly reduce the risk of sulfate attack, alkali-silica reactions and chloride penetration. However, it may also reduce the concrete resistance against carbonation. Due to the time consuming process of concrete carbonation, many researchers have used accelerated carbonation test to shorten the experimental time. However, there are always some uncertainties in the accelerated carbonation test results. Most importantly, the moisture content and moisture profile of the concrete before the carbonation test can significantly affect the test results. In this work, more than 200 samples with various water-cementitious material ratios and various replacement percentages of GGBS were cast. The compressive strength, electrical resistivity, chloride permeability and carbonation tests were conducted. The moisture loss and microstructure of concrete were studied. The partial replacement of PC with GGBS produced considerable improvement on various properties of concrete.

  • The development of automobile, vessel, rail road, and machine industry leads an increase of foundry production used as their components, which cause a by-product, waste foundry sand (WFS). The amount of the WFS produced in Korea is over 700,000 tons a year, but most WFS has been buried itself and only $5{\~}6\%$ WFS is recycled as construction materials. Therefore, it is necessary for most WFS to research other ways which can be used in a higher value added product. The study on recycling it as a fine aggregate for concrete or green sand has been in progress in America and Japan since 1970s and 1980s respaectively. In this study, two types of WFS were used as a fine aggregate for concrete. Nine types of concrete aimed at the specified strength of 30 MPa were mixed with washed seashore coarse sand in which salt was removed, and WFS and then appropriate mixture proportion of concrete was determined. Moreover, basic properties such as air contents, setting time, bleeding, workability and slump loss of the fresh concrete with WFS were tested and compared with those of the concrete mixed without WFS. In addition, both compressive strength of hardened concrete at each ages and tensile strength of it at the age of 28 days were measured and discussed.

  • Throughout the previous years, many efforts focused on incorporating non-biodegradable wastes as a partial replacement and sustainable alternative for natural aggregates in cement-based materials. Currently, rubberized concrete is considered one of the most important green concrete materials produced by replacing natural aggregates with rubber particles from old tires in a concrete mixture. The main benefits of this material, in addition to its importance in sustainability and waste management, comes from the ability of rubber to considerably damp vibrations, which, when used in reinforced concrete structures, can significantly enhance its energy dissipation and vibration behavior. Nowadays, the literature has many experimental findings that provide an interesting view of rubberized concrete's dynamic behavior. On the other hand, it still lacks research that collects, interprets, and numerically investigates these findings to provide some correlations and construct reliable prediction models for rubberized concrete's dynamic properties. Therefore, this study is intended to propose prediction approaches for the dynamic properties of rubberized concrete. As a part of the study, multiple linear regression and artificial neural networks will be used to create prediction models for dynamic modulus of elasticity, damping ratio, and natural frequency.

  • Between multiple components of the building, materials have a direct impact on the environment. For many researchers have proposed guidelines for green design materials. However they didnt provide concrete criteria for selecting materials for selecting materials for achieving green design. From the perspective of this point, this paper proposes. Performance information expressed numerically is the most important factor. The purpose of this study is to provide the specific information about the performance of materials that has been ranked quantitatively. The performance information can be utilited in selecting materials for green design.

  • This study was performed for the application of porous concrete blocks and aquatic plants for the water purification in small urban stream. This study investigated the ability of water purification according to various environments, algae and aquatic plants. When the porous concrete was used as contact media, the average removal efficiencies of SS, BOD and COD were 85~95%, 50~60% and 65~75%, respectively. Also, when the porous concrete and aquatic plants was used the average removal efficiency of SS, BOD and COD were 90~95%, 60~70% and 70~80%, respectively. As the results, average removal efficiency of total nitrogen, at the condition of the porous concrete and aquatic plants, was about 40-50%, then, that of total phosphorus was about 60-70%.

  • This work is conducted with the aim of using waste material to reserve the natural resources. The objective is accomplished by conducting experimentation and verify by modeling based on fuzzy logic. In experimentation, concrete is casted by using natural/river sand as fine aggregate and termed as control specimen. Natural sand is conserved by replacing it with used foundry sand (UFS) by an amount of 10, 20 and 30% by weight. Fresh and hardened properties of concrete are investigated at different ages. It is observed that compressive strength and modulus of elasticity reduced with the increase in amount of UFS. Furthermore, concrete compressive strength is predicted by using fuzzy logic model and verified at different replacement ratio and age with experimental observations.

  • Recently, as industrialization is rapidly growing and the standard of life is rising, the quantities of waste glasses have been hastily increased and most of them are not recycled but abandoned. It cause some problems such as the waste of natural resources and environmental Pollution. Therefore, this study was conducted basic experimental research to analyze the possibilities of recycling of waste glasses(crushed waste glasses outbreaking from our county such as brown, green, colorlessness) as fine aggregates for concrete. Test results of fresh concrete, slump and compacting factors decrease because grain shape is angular and air content increase due to involving small size particles so much in waste glasses. Also compressive, tensile and flexural strengths decrease with increase of the content of waste glasses. In conclusion, the content of waste glasses below 30% is reasonable

  • Taking into account the geometrical and material nonlinearities, an ultimate behavior of reinforced concrete cooling tower shell in hyperbolic configuration is presented. The design wind pressures suggested in the guidelines of the US (ACI) and Germany (VGB), with or without the effect of internal suction, are employed in the analysis to examine the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of each design wind pressure. The geometrical nonlinearity is incorporated by the Green-Lagrange strain tensor. The nonlinear features of concrete, such as the nonlinear stress-strain relation in compression, the tensile cracking with the smeared crack model, an effect of tension stiffening, are taken into account. The biaxial stress state in concrete is represented by an improved work-hardening plasticity model. From the perspective of quality of wind pressures, the two guidelines are determined as highly correlated each other. Through the extensive analysis on the Niederaussem cooling tower in Germany, not only the ultimate load is determined but also the mechanism of failure, distribution of cracks, damage processes, stress redistributions, and mean crack width are examined.
