Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Diffuse Thyroid Disease: a Study Comparing Grayscale US and Texture Analysis of Real-Time Elastography (RTE) and Grayscale US

  • Background and Objectives: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic performances of grayscale ultrasound (US) and quantitative parameters obtained from texture analysis of grayscale US and elastography images in evaluating patients with diffuse thyroid disease (DTD). Materials and Methods: From September to December 2012, 113 patients (mean age, $43.4{\pm}10.7years$) who had undergone preoperative staging US and elastography were included in this study. Assessment of the thyroid parenchyma for the diagnosis of DTD was made if US features suggestive of DTD were present. Nine histogram parameters were obtained from the grayscale US and elastography images, from which 'grayscale index' and 'elastography index' were calculated. Diagnostic performances of grayscale US, texture analysis using grayscale US and elastography were calculated and compared. Results: Of the 113 patients, 85 (75.2%) patients were negative for DTD and 28 (24.8%) were positive for DTD on pathology. The presence of US features suggestive of DTD showed significantly higher rates of DTD on pathology, 60.7% to 8.2% (p<0.001). Specificity, accuracy, and positive predictive value was highest in US features, 91.8%, 84.1%, and 87.6%, respectively (all ps<0.05). Grayscale index showed higher sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) than US features. All diagnostic performances were higher for grayscale index than the elastography index. Area under the curve of US features was the highest, 0.762, but without significant differences to grayscale index or mean of elastography (all ps>0.05). Conclusion: Diagnostic performances were the highest for grayscale US features in diagnosis of DTD. Grayscale index may be used as a complementary tool to US features for improving sensitivity and NPV.

Forming a Fresnel Zone Lens: Effects of Photoresist on Digital-micromirror-device Maskless Lithography with Grayscale Exposure

  • This study discusses photoresist forming using a composite grayscale to fabricate a Fresnel lens. Grayscale lithography is a common production method used to facilitate the forming of lenses with different curvatures and depths. However, this approach is time consuming and expensive. This study proposes a method for overcoming these obstacles by integrating a digital micromirror device and microscope to supplant the traditional physical grayscale mask. This approach provides a simple and practical maskless optical lithography system. According to the results, the two adjacent grayscales displayed substantial differences between the high grayscale and influence the low grayscale that ultimately affected photoresist formation. Furthermore, we show that change of up to 150% in the slope can be achieved by changing the grayscale gradient in the central zone and the ring profile. The results of the optical experiment show a focus change with different gray gradients.

  • In this paper, a composition modulation of Dot-matrix display grayscale is presented. There's two method of expression of Dot-matrix Display grayscale. One is PWM by controlling pulse width. The other is PAM by controlling pulse amplitude. Composition modulation of Dot-matrix use PWM and PAM together. Composition modulation shows the number of grayscale as number of grayscale of PWM$\times$number of grayscale of PAM and have the effect of reduced size than existing single modulation.

A Joint Transform Correlator Encryption System Based on Binary Encoding for Grayscale Images

  • A binary encoding method for grayscale images is proposed to address their unsatisfactory decryption results from joint transform correlator (JTC) encryption systems. The method converts the encryption and decryption of grayscale images into that of binary images, and effectively improves decrypted-image quality. In the simulation, we replaced unencoded grayscale images with their binary encoded counterparts in the JTC encryption and decryption processes, then adopted a median filter to suppress saturation noise while keeping other settings unchanged. Accordingly, decrypted-image quality was clearly enhanced as the correlation coefficient (CC) between a decrypted image and its original rose from 0.8237 to 0.9473 initially, and then further to 0.9937, following the above two steps respectively. Finally, optical experimental results confirmed that the proposed encryption system works correctly.

형태학 필터의 효과적 구현 방안에 관한 연구 (EFFICIENT IMPLEMENTATION OF GRAYSCALE MORPHOLOGICAL OPERATORS)

  • 본 논문에서는 농담구조소(濃淡構造素)(GSE, grayscale structuring element)를 갖는 형태학 필터의 실시간 처리를 위한 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘에서는 GSE로부터 유도된 basis matrix와 입력 샘플들로 구성된 input matrix를 이용하여 각 형태학 연산들을 소역행렬연산(local matrix operation)으로 새롭게 정의하고 있는데, 이를 이용하여 opening이나 closing과 같은 복합 형태학 연산들을 실시간으로 처리할 수 있음을 보였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 복원 형태학 연산들을 erosion과 dilation의 직렬조합(cascade combination)으로 처리하던 기존의 방법에 비해 적은 메모리를 필요로 하면서도, 출력을 얻기까지의 지연(遲延)(delay)이 훨씬 적다는 장점을 갖는다. 또한 본 논문에서는 형태학 필터를 VLSI로 구현하기 위한 효율적 방안을 제안하였다. 제안된 방법에서는 p-bit으로 표현되는 신호에 대한 형태학 연산을 p개의 이진(binary) 형태학 연산자들의 조합으로 구현하였는데, 각 이진 연산자들은 MSB(most significant bit)부터 순차적으로 (bit-serial approach) 해당 레벨의 bit들을 처리하여 출력을 부를 구조로 이루어져 있다. 본 논문에서는 형태학 필터의 VLSI 구현에 있어서 제안된 방법이 기존의 Threshold Decomposition 방법 등에 비해 보다 효율적이라는 것을 보였다.

그레이스케일 마스크를 이용한 미소렌즈 배열의 제작 (Fabrication of micro-lens arrays using a grayscale mask)

  • 홀로그래픽 필름으로 제작된 그레이스케일 마스크를 통하여 두꺼운 포토레지스트를 자외선으로 근접 노광하여 주기 300 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 두께 17 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 초점거리 2.2 mm인 10$\times$10 미소렌즈 배열을 제작하였다. 그레이스케일 마스크는 컴퓨터로 설계한 미소렌즈 배열을 필름 출력기를 이용하여 고해상도 흑백 필름에 그레이스케일로 기록 및 현상하고 이를 다시 홀로그래픽 필름에 축소복사(6.6배)하여 제작하였다. 본 제작방법은 저렴한 비용으로 100%에 가까운 fill-factor를 얻을 수 있고, 비구면 렌즈를 구현하기가 쉽다는 장점을 가진다.
