  • Pivalic acid, which has a globular shape and is a plastic crystal, has been examined by means of temperature-dependent with-line proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results of temperature-dependent line width, second moment, and spin-lattice relaxation time studies of pivalic acid were interpreted in terms of dynamic behavior and hydrogen bonding. The dynamic behavior consists of superimposed reorientation of the methyl groups about their three-fold axes$(C_3) and of the molecule about the central C-C bond(C_3'),$ general molecular reorientation about the center of gravity, and molecular self-diffusion. Activation energies for the motional processes have been obtained from line width measurements using the modified Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound theory and from spin-lattice relaxation time measurements. The results were compared with the Pople-Karasz theory of fusion and the agreement was found to be poor. The discrepancy was interpreted in terms of hydrogen bonding in this molecule.

Skew Detection for Thai Printed Document Images

  • The paper proposes the scheme of skew detection for Thai printed document images by using linear regression algorithm. It intends to use with the Thai character recognition systems to reduce the skew detection time. This scheme begins by finding the center of gravity of a document image. This point is used as the starting point for gathering data in the scheme. The data is obtained by scanning incrementally one pixel in vertically with the width of 20-pixels. After the scanning process, if data Is different from it's neighbor more than ${\pm}$ 15 pixels, it will be considered as noise or data in other lines and will be deleted. The last step is the operation by using linear regression algorithm on these selected data and the skew angle will be obtained. The proposed method has been tested with 45 document images with different fonts, sizes and skew angles. The experiment results show that the proposed method can detect the skew angle with the error of less then one degree. The average processing time is about 19 times faster than that of the Hough Transform method.

License Plates Detection Using a Gaussian Windows (가우시안 창을 이용한 번호판 영역 검출)

  • In the current study, the authors propose a method for extracting license plate regions by means of a neural network trained to output the plates center of gravity. The method is shown to be effective. Since the learning pattern presentation positions are defined by random numbers, a different pattern is submitted to the neural network for learning each time, which enables it to form a neural network with high universality of coverage. The article discusses issues of the optimal learning surface for a license plate covered by the learning pattern, the effect of suppression learning of the number and headlight sections, as well as the effect of learning pattern enlargement/reduction and of concentration value conversion. Results of evaluation tests based on pictures of 595 vehicles taken at an underground parking garage demonstrated detection rates of 98.5%.

  • The attitude control of a double inverted pendulum with a periodical disturbance at link top is dealt in this paper. The proposed system is consisted of the double inverted pendulum and a disturbance link. The lower link is hinged on the plate to free for rotation in the vertical plane. The upper link is connected to the lower link through a DC motor. The DC motor is used to control the posture of the pendulum by adjusting the position of the upper link. The periodical disturbance can be generated by the additional link attached at the end of link 2 through another DC motor, which is the modeling of a posture for a biped supporting with one leg. The motor for the joint simulates the knee joint(or hip joint) and the disturbance for the legs moving in air. The algorithm for controlling a proposed inverted pendulum is consisted of a state feedback control and a fuzzy logic controller. The fuzzy controller keeps the center of gravity of the biped within the specified range through the nonlinear feedback compensator. The state feedback control takes over the role to maintain a desired posture regardless the disturbance at the link top. In these case, the change of the angle and COG of an upper link is compensated with on-line. Simulations with a mathematical model are conducted to show the validity of the proposed controller.

  • The research developed twin keel yacht for everyone which is able to stand erectly on mud flat without list and intended to commercialize the development product for popularization of west coast's marine leisure industry. Yacht's linear was utilized by "Blue Water21" has superior performance among the existing sailing yachts and twin keel model has been tested by calculation of mono keel's extent and its center of gravity. The result was that only 4 % of difference have been identified between mono keel and twin keel's hydrodynamic resistance which was smaller difference than predicted.

  • This paper presents a systematic method of the zigzag gait planning for quadruped walking robots. When a robot walks with a zigzag gait, its body is allowed to move from side to side, while the body movement is restricted along a moving direction in conventional continuous gaits. The zigzag movement of the body is effective to improve the gait stability margin. To plan a zigzag gait in a systematic way, the relationship between the center of gravity(COG) and the stability margin is firstly investigated. Then, new geometrical method is introduced to plan a sequence of the body movement which guarantees a maximum stability margin as well as monotonicity along a moving direction. Finally, an optimal swing-leg sequence is chosen for a given arbitrary configuration of the robot. To verify the proposed method, computer simulations have been performed for both cases of a periodic gait and a non-periodic gait.

  • As resolution for displays is recently more and more increasing, the amount of data abd calculation that graphic hardware needs to process are also increasing. Especially the amount of data processing by rasterizer is rapidly increasing. This paper used an algorism using coordinates in center of gravity and area for triangle instead of using bilinear algorism[1] used by conventional interpolation, which is to make it easier for parallel processing by rasterizer. This paper implemented designed rasterizer under FPGA environment, and compared it with conventional rasterizer and verified it. This rasterizer is proved to have approximately 50% higher performance compared to conventional one.

Test and evaluation of a large scale composite rotor blade for wind turbine (풍력발전용 대형 복합재 회전날개의 구조시험 및 평가에 관한 연구)

  • A structural test of the wind turbine rotor blade is to evaluate the uncertainty of design due to selection of material, design concepts, production processes and so on, and their possible impacts on the structural integrity. In the full-scale static strength test, the measuring parameters are strain and displacements vs. loads, weight and the center of gravity. In order to simulate the aerodynamics load, the three-point loading method is applied. There is slight difference between the measured results and the predicted results for the reference fiber volume fraction of 60% . However, the agreement between the measured results and the predicted results with the actual fiber volume fraction of 52.5% is good. Even though a slightly non-linearity from 80% loading to 100% loading exists, a linear static solution is sufficient for the design purpose due to te small amount of non-linearity. Comparison between measured and predicted strain results at the maximum thickness positions of the blade profile for 0.236R(5.56m), 0.493R(11.59m) and 0.574R(13.43m), under 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% loadings for the upper part of the blade. The predicted values are in good agreement with the measured values.

  • Depth of SWASH(Small Waterplane Area Single Hull) vessel which is an input value of its control system is measured by ultrasonic sensor. Distance to the its center of gravity can be simply calculated through ultrasonic sensor attached to the front of the vessel from the known values. However, it is to be calibrated with respect to its position for the accurate depth because it has geometric relation between the measurement value of ultrasonic sensor and the depth. In this research, depth calibration method of SWASH vessel using its position and ultrasonic sensor is introduced.

Weight reduction and strengthening of marine hatch covers by using composite materials

  • The application of composites as an alternative material for marine steel hatch covers is the subject of this study. Two separate approaches are considered; weight reduction approach and strengthening approach. For both approaches Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed using ANSYS software. Critical design parameters of the composite hatch cover and FEA are discussed in details. Regarding the weight reduction approach; steel hatch covers of a bulk carrier were replaced by composite covers and a weight reduction of 44.32% was achieved leading to many benefits including fuel saving, Deadweight Increment and lower center of gravity of the vessel. For the strengthening approach; the foremost hatch cover was strengthened to withstand 150% of the load required by IACS for safer navigation while no change in weight was made between the steel and composite covers. Results show that both approaches are feasible and advantageous.
