  • Transmission characteristics of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) fabricated by periodically etching a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) are investigated. After coating the SMF with photoresist, the cladding of the SMF is symmetrically and periodically removed by using a wet etching technique resulting in the formation of the LPFG. Tensile strain reinforces the coupling strength between the core and the cladding mode based on the photoelastic effect. The extinction ratio of the SMF-based LPFG at a wavelength of 1550.8 nm is measured to be -15.1 dB when the applied strain is $600{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. The ascent of ambient index shifts the resonant wavelength to shorter wavelength because of the increase of the effective refractive index of the cladding mode. The extinction ratio is diminished by increase in the ambient index because of the induction of the optical attenuation of the cladding mode. The transmission characteristics of the proposed LPFG with variations in torsion are also measured. The photoelastic effect based on torsion changes the extinction ratio and the resonant wavelength of the proposed SMF-based LPFG. The polarization-dependent loss of the LPFG is also increased by torsion because of the torsion-induced birefringence. The polarization-dependent loss of the LPFG at torsion of 8.5 rad/m is measured to be 3.9 dB.

  • We propose an extended additional layer method (EALM) of calculating the coupling coefficient of arbitrary shaped diffraction gratings. In EALM, to determine the unperturbed field distribtution, a grating region is replaced by a new uniform layer whose dielectric constant is the average value of the dielectric constant of a grating region in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Using this method, we calculate the coupling coefficient for a five-layer distributed feedback structure device with trapezoidal and triangular gratings. The validity of this method is established by comparing the results calculated by partitioning the grating region up to five uniform layers.

  • A systematic method for tunable dispersion compensation based on chirped fiber Bragg gratings without a center wavelength shift is proposed. The specially designed mechanical rotator can flexibly control the chirping ratio along the fiber grating and the corresponding dispersion value. The group delay can be linearly controllable since the proposed method can induce a linear strain gradient with the rotation angle change. The dispersion value could be controlled from 228.04 ㎰/nm to 1430.7 ㎰/nm with small center wavelength shift, which was less than 0.03 nm.

  • In this paper, dielectric waveguide gratings, which can be applied to the nonreciprocal devices such as isolators, are proposed. Those grating structures can be considered as cascade connections of step discontinuities between uniform dielectric waveguides and another uniform dielectric waveguides with a ferrite layer. Therefore, the nonreciprocal scattering characteristics of such gratings can be obtained form the scattering characteristics of step discontinuities and uniform dielectric wave guides. For the periodic grating structures, band-reject characteristics can be located inside or outside the frequency range of interest. Numerical analyses are performed at 35GHz and experimental results at X-band are also presented.

  • The space harmonics generated by a plane-wave incident upon a multi-layered dielectric grating can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). To clarify these effects, we examine the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT). The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, we confirm and generalize previous research that has occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TM mode.

  • We theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of apodization on the transmission characteristics of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings(CFBGs). Based on the UV beam scanning method along a phase mask, we fabricated several apodized CFBGs with different apodization profiles such as Gaussian, Raised-cosine, Blackman, and Hyperbolic tangent. During the UV beam scanning, the phase mask is dithered by a PZT(Piezoelectric transducer) which is precisely controlled by a computer program so that the apodization profiles can be flexibly applied to the grating. We measured the reflection spectra and group delay characteristics of CFBGs with the different apodization profiles, and compared them according to their properties such as reflectivity, sidelobes, and group delay ripple (GDR). The peak-to-peak of GDR could be suppressed to less than 20 ps.

  • Diffraction gratings with precise spatial periods of 2 ${\mu}m$ and 5 ${\mu}m$ have been fabricated by using a femtosecond laser which does not have limits on materials of micromachining and small thermal effects due to high peak power. Diffraction angle and diffraction efficiency of those were measured. Simulation results of diffraction angle and diffraction efficiency of the diffraction grating calculated with the parameters such as line width, depth, and spatial period of the fabricated gratings were compared with experimental results measured with a He-Ne laser. Besides these, Fresnel Zone Plates (FZPs) with focal distances of 50 mm and 25 mm were fabricated and focal distances of fabricated FZP were measured. Those experimental results for diffraction gratings and FZPs match well with experimental results.

  • We studied the characteristics of annular phase gratings as spatial frequency filters. We first calculated the Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of annular gratings and then got the modulation transfer function (MTF) from the zeroth order Hankel transform of the intensity distribution function. Binaryphase annular grating shows higher diffraction efficiency than binary phase rectangular grating. But the MTF decreases linearly in the low-frequency region as that of rectangular grating does. The diffraction pattern of 4-phase annular grating is similar to that of 2-phase grating and hence MTFs of the two are much alike. For 8-phase annular grating, the 7th order diffracted beam is the lowest one next to the first. Consequently, the diffraction efficiency is very high and the MTF graph is curved upward. The diffracted beams except the first order are negligible and hence the MTF characteristics are more improved in the case of 16-phase grating. But the degree of improvement becomes lowered c(Impaled with 8-phase grating. We made a 16-phase annular grating and measured its MTF. The experimental result agrees well with the calculated one.

  • The thermal endurance of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), written with the aid of 193-nm ArF excimer laser irradiation on H2-loaded Ge/B codoped silica fiber, and pretreated with a CO2 laser and a subsequent slow cooling process, is investigated. These treated gratings show relatively less degradation of grating strength during the thermal annealing procedure. The thermal decay characteristics of treated and untreated fiber, recorded over a time period of 9 hours, have been compared. The effect on the Bragg transmission depth (BTD) and the center-wavelength shift, as well as the growth of refractive-index change during the grating inscription process for both treated and untreated fiber, are analyzed.

  • Methylene blue-sensitized photopolymerizable material based on acrylamide is investigated with two-wave energy coupling experiments. Differently from other studies, self-diffraction oscillations are observed and the grating phase is determined without applying external electric fields, moving nonlinear materials, and phase shifting one of two writing beams. The phase grating showed a phase shift of $\pm$50$^{\circ}$ with respect to the intensity grating. Modified Kogelnik's coupled wave equation considering the mixed gratings of phase and absorption gratings and nonzero spatial phase shifts of the gratings with respect to the intensity interference patterns formed during the two-wave energy coupling is discussed in detail to understand these phenomenon.
