Generally, trees lining the streets are the most easily accessible green areas in the city and constitute the smallest basic unit in the formation of the urban linear green axis. This study attempts to interpret issues related to city trees from a comprehensive and relational viewpoint. The site of this study is Central Park Street in front of Incheon Metropolitan City Hall. This street is representative of those in Incheon City. This study is an inter-relational interpretation of issues by measuring the vitality of these trees. The following are results of this study: First, the vitality of city trees is higher in those trees growing in natural ground than those growing in plant gratings. This observation can lead to budget savings and increased natural areas in the city. Also, if planter and multi-layering planting methods are introduced where damage to trees is predicted, variation to urban landscape can be achieved while linking to reinforced rearing foundation of street-side trees. Second, there is need for a holistic approach to caring for street-side trees regarding the damage caused by drastic pruning and strong street lights. The typical functions of these trees, like supplying freshness in summer, absorbing solar radiation, and controlling the urban micro-climate are closely related to the vitality of the trees. Accordingly, the function and ecology should be understood holistically, not separately. In this aspect, the functional and ecological use of the multi-layering planting method is effective in protecting pedestrians from vehicles as well. Third, the fallen leaves of monotonous rows of trees have different ecological and functional effects. Not only is the index of greenness in the urban setting increased, but there are also aesthetic and symbolic effects. Fourth, in spite of being the street along which Incheon Metropolitan City Hall, major administrative buildings and Central Park are located, this street does not have its own special identity to discriminate it from other streets. It fulfills only functional criteria based on uniformity. If there is no paradigm shift from today's street system based on vehicles, the role of landscape architecture will be very passive in regards to street-side trees, the minimum unit of urban green. Fifth, on this particular street, many trees were planted in December, which reflects a deficiency of short and long-term strategy, like a street-tree master plan. In this aspect, we still lack a mature culture concerning these trees as a basic unit in urban greenery. Furthermore, there needs to be cultural introspection concerning present administrative practices.
It is well known that the maximum amplitude of accommodation decreases with increasing age.(Presbyopia). With single vision lenses presbyopia can be corrected only for one viewing distance. With progressive power lenses presbyopia can be corrected for all viewing distances. But there are some other changes in the visual system with age which can not be corrected by spectacle lenses. Pupillary diameter decreases and the light transmission of the ocular media decreases. Therefore old people need more light, they need better illumination. Cone density in the retina decreases, this is only one example for changes in the sensory system. These changes in the visual system cause changes in visual functions. At the age of 80 visual acuity has decreased to half. Contrast sensitivity for gratings decreases mainly for high spatial frequencies very important is the increase of stray light in the ocular media and therefore the increase of glare. Veiling luminance increases by a multiple of approximately 4, Dark adaptation gets slower and light sensitivity is approximately 2 log units (factor 100) less when the eye is completely dark adapted. Also colour vision gets worse, especially at low luminances. Elderly people have problems with visual tasks which require divided attention between foveal and peripheral vision. An example is the measurement of the useful field of view. This useful field of view be expanded (improved) by visual training.

The characterization of detectors installed in space- and ground-based instruments is important to evaluate the system performance. We report the development of a detector performance test system for astronomical applications using the Andor iKon M CCD camera. The performance test system consists of a light source, monochromator, integrating sphere, and power meters. We adopted the Czerny-Tuner monochromator with three ruled gratings and one mirror, which covers a spectral range of 200-9,000 nm with a spectral resolution of ~1 nm in the visible region. Various detector characteristics, such as the quantum efficiency, sensitivity, and noise, can be measured in wide wavelength ranges from the visible to mid-infrared regions. We evaluated the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) detector performance test system by using the performance verification of the Andor iKon-M CCD camera. The test procedure includes measurements of the conversion gain ($2.86e^-/ADU$), full well capacity ($130K\;e^-$), nonlinearity, and pixel defects. We also estimated the read noise, dark current, and quantum efficiency as a function of the temperature. The lowest measured read noise is $12e^-$. The dark current at 223 K was determined to be $7e^-/s/pix$ and its doubling temperature is $5.3^{\circ}C{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ at an activation energy of 0.6 eV. The maximum quantum efficiency at 223 K was estimated to be $93%{\pm}2%$. We proved that the quantum efficiency is sensitive to the operating temperature. It varies up to 5 % in the visible region, while the variation increases to 30 % in the near-infrared region. Based on the comparison of our results with the test report by the vendor, we conclude that our performance test results are consistent with those from the vendor considering the test environment. We also confirmed that the KASI detector performance test system is reliable and our measurement method and analysis are accurate.

In this study, we propose a novel fiber optic sensor to show the measurement feasibility of distributed temperature and strains in a single sensing fiber line. Distributed temperature can be measured using optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) with a Raman anti-Stokes light in the sensing fiber line. Moreover, the strain can be measured by fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in the same sensing fiber line. The anti-Stokes Raman back-scattering lights from both ends of the sensing fiber, which consists of a 4 km single mode optical fiber, are acquired and inserted into a newly formulated equation to calculate the temperature. Furthermore, the center wavelengths from the FBGs in the sensing fiber are detected by an optical spectrum analyzer; these are converted to strain values. The initial wavelengths of the FBGs are selected to avoid a cross-talk with the wavelength of the Raman pulsed pump light. Wavelength shifts from a tension test were found to be 0.1 nm, 0.17 nm, 0.29 nm, and 0.00 nm, with corresponding strain values of $85.76{\mu}{\epsilon}$, $145.55{\mu}{\epsilon}$, $247.86{\mu}{\epsilon}$, and $0.00{\mu}{\epsilon}$, respectively. In addition, a 50 m portion of the sensing fiber from $30^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ at $10^{\circ}C$ intervals was used to measure the distributed temperature. In all tests, the temperature measurement accuracy of the proposed sensor was less than $0.50^{\circ}C$.
We obtained precise linear transverse displacements from the results of signal processing on moire fringes measured by the superposition of a fixed self-imaging elongated circular(EC) grating and a moved EC grating. The linear displacement less than one pitch of the moving EC grating was calculated from the position of a bright moire fringe generated on the linear grating part of the EC gratings. The moire signals were high-frequency-filtered, smoothed, curve-fitted, and first-differentiated moire signals in sequence. Also the linear displacement created by movement by the unit of integer times of a pitch was readily measured by the count of the even number of zero-crossing points corresponding to bright moire fringes obtained by the above same processing without curve fitting. Then we can measure linear transverse displacements with the accuracy of better than 3 %, which are more accurate values than those by the traditional visual method within the displacement of 80 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
The fabrication process of thin boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (B-NCD) microelectrodes on fused silica single mode optical fiber cladding has been investigated. The B-NCD films were deposited on the fibers using Microwave Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (MW PA CVD) at glass substrate temperature of 475 ℃. We have obtained homogenous, continuous and polycrystalline surface morphology with high sp3 content in B-NCD films and mean grain size in the range of 100-250 nm. The films deposited on the glass reference samples exhibit high refractive index (n=2.05 at λ=550 nm) and low extinction coefficient. Furthermore, cyclic voltammograms (CV) were recorded to determine the electrochemical window and reaction reversibility at the B-NCD fiber-based electrode. CV measurements in aqueous media consisting of 5 mM K3[Fe(CN)6] in 0.5 M Na2SO4 demonstrated a width of the electrochemical window up to 1.03 V and relatively fast kinetics expressed by a redox peak splitting below 500 mV. Moreover, thanks to high-n B-NCD overlay, the coated fibers can be also used for enhancing the sensitivity of long-period gratings (LPGs) induced in the fiber. The LPG is capable of measuring variations in refractive index of the surrounding liquid by tracing the shift in resonance appearing in the transmitted spectrum. Possible combined CV and LPG-based measurements are discussed in this work.
A color filter was demonstrated incorporating a patterned metal grating in a quartz substrate. The filter is created in a metal layer perforated with a symmetric two-dimensional array of circular holes, with the pitch smaller than the wavelength of the visible light. A finite-difference time-domain simulation was performed to analyze the device by investigating the effect of structural parameters like the grating height, the period, the hole size, and the refractive index of the hole-filling material on its performance. The device performance was especially optimized by controlling the refractive index of the material comprising the holes of the grating. And two different devices were fabricated by means of the e-beam direct writing with the following design parameters: the grating height of 50 nm, the two pitches of 340 nm for the red color and 260 nm for the green color. For the prepared device with the period of 340 nm, the center wavelength was 680 nm and the peak transmission 57%. And for the other device with the pitch of 260 nm, the center wavelength was 550 nm and the peak transmission was 50%. The filling of the hole with a material whose refractive index is matched to that of the substrate has led to an increase of ${\sim}15%$ in the transmission efficiency.
A color filter was proposed and demonstrated by incorporating a subwavelength patterned 1-dimensional grating in poly silicon. It was produced by employing the laser interference lithography method, providing much wider effective area compared to the conventional e-beam lithography. A $SiO_2$ layer was introduced on top of the silicon grating layer as a mask for the etching of the silicon, facilitating the etching of the silicon layer. It was theoretically found that the selectivity of the filter was also improved thanks to the oxide layer. The parameters for the designed device include the grating pitch of 450 nm, the grating height of 100 nm and the oxide-layer height of 200 nm. As for the fabricated filter, the spectral pass band corresponded to the blue color centered at 470 nm and the peak transmission was about 40%. Within the effective area of $3{\times}3mm^2$, the variation in the relative transmission efficiency and in the center wavelength was less than 10% and 2 nm respectively. Finally, the influence of the angle of the incident beam upon the transfer characteristics of the device was investigated in terms of the rate of the relative transmission efficiency, which was found to be equivalent to 1.5%/degree.

Fiber-optic strain sensors based on Bragg reflection gratings produce the change of reflection spectrum when an external stress is applied on the sensor. To measure the Bragg reflection wavelength in high speed, an arrayed waveguide grating device is incorporated in this work. By monitoring the output power from each channel of the AWG, the peak wavelength corresponding to the applied strain could be obtained. To enhance the accuracy of the AWG wavelength interrogation system, a chirped fiber Bragg grating with a 3-dB bandwith of 5.4 nm is utilized. The high-speed response of the proposed system is demonstrated by measuring a fast varying strain produced by the damped oscillation of a cantilever. An oscillation frequency of 17.8 Hz and a damping time constant of 0.96 second are obtained in this measurement.

The Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrometer (IGRINS) is an unprecedentedly minimized infrared cross-dispersed echelle spectrograph with a high-resolution and high-sensitivity optical performance. A silicon immersion grating features the instrument for the first time in this field. IGRINS will cover the entire portion of the wavelength range between 1.45 and $2.45{\mu}m$ accessible from the ground in a single exposure with spectral resolution of 40,000. Individual volume phase holographic (VPH) gratings serve as cross-dispersing elements for separate spectrograph arms covering the H and K bands. On the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at the McDonald Observatory, the slit size is $1^{\prime\prime}{\times}15^{\prime\prime}$. IGRINS has a $0.27^{\prime\prime}$ pixel-1 plate scale on a $2048{\times}2048$ pixel Teledyne Scientific & Imaging HAWAII-2RG detector with SIDECAR ASIC cryogenic controller. The instrument includes four subsystems; a calibration unit, an input relay optics module, a slit-viewing camera, and nearly identical H and K spectrograph modules. The use of a silicon immersion grating and a compact white pupil design allows the spectrograph collimated beam size to be 25mm, which permits the entire cryogenic system to be contained in a moderately sized rectangular vacuum chamber. The fabrication and assembly of the optical and mechanical hardware components were completed in 2013. In this presentation, we describe the major design characteristics of the instrument and the early performance estimated from the first light commissioning at the McDonald Observatory.
