This study was conducted to evaluate two sample digestion procedures and instrumental determination parameters for analysis of lead in bone. Amputated human legs were treated by acid digestion or microwave dissolution prior to spectrometric analysis. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) were used for determining bone lead levels. Recovery efficiencies using standard reference material from acid digestion measured by ICP-MS were in good agreement with those of the certified value, but in cases of acid digestion by GF-AAS and microwave digestion by both two methods, recovery underestimated and overestimated, respectively. For the bone samples, the lead concentrations obtained by ICP-MS after acid digestionwere in good agreement with those by GF-AAS (correlation coefficient = 0.983), but GF-AAS gave systematically higher values than ICP-MS. While a good agreement between two analytical methods after microwave digestion was also obtained (correlation coefficient = 0.950), bone lead concentrations from microwave were relatively higher than those from acid digestion. In conclusion, the use of the simple nitric acid digestion procedure at an ambient temperature coupled to ICP-MS seems to be efficient for the determination of lead in bone in consideration for both the convenience and validity.
It was examined in this study that magnetic beads, which are assumed to be environmentally functional, could be effective in processing heavy metals that are water pollutants. For the purpose, magnetic beads containing carboxyl groups, which has strong binding force with heavy metals, are mixed with each Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu and Cr(III) solution, then stirred in pH 6. As a results of the process, it was proven that heavy metals bind quickly with magnetic beads through the reaction. In order to analyze heavy metal concentration, magnetic beads bind with heavy metal were collected by external magnetic force and dissolved in acid. The graphite furnace AAS was used to get heavy metal concentration melted in the acid solution. The results showed that heavy metal extractions by magnetic beads were influenced by the type and the concentration of a heavy metal, and over 90% of a heavy metal can be extracted in ppm level save for Cr(III). It was also examined in the study whether heavy metal extraction is influenced when other ions exist in each heavy metal solution. According to experiment, adding other heavy metals to a solution did have little influence on extracting an intended heavy metal. But in case salt or heavy metal chelate was added, Ni extraction changed sensitively although extracting other heavy metals were influenced only when the concentration of an added substance is high. In conclusion, it was shown that magnetic beads could be used to treat wastewater with relatively high heavy metal concentration.
Commercially pure titanium(cp-Ti) and Ti-15wt%Zr-4wt%Nb-4wt%Ta alloy were melted in vacuum induction furnace. According to the chemical analysis, the content of carbon was above ASTM standard in the cast ingots because of using graphite crucible. The TEM micostructures of cp-Ti and Ti alloy shows that chemically stable TiC precipitates distribute in ${\alpha}-Ti$ matrix. In order to examine the properties of cp-Ti and Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta alloy for dental applications, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance were investigated. The anodic polarization properties of Ti-Zr-Nb-Zr alloy were almost same as that of cp-Ti in 1% lactic acid. However, as the results of the anodic polarization test in 5% HCl, it was known that Ti-Zr-Nb-Zr alloy showed a rapid decrease in current density at higher potential in comparison with cp-Ti. The yield stress and tensile strengh in Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=623\;MPa$, ${\sigma}_{T.S.}=708\;MPa$ and these results showed 30% increase in yield stress in comparison with cp-Ti.
In this study, we investigated the change in lead content of canned coffee drinks while kept for 16 weeks in an incubator adjusted to $65^{\circ}C$. Our research aim was to ensure the safety of canned coffee purchased from vending machine and stores. The lead analysis were conducted by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after wet digestion using concentrated nitric acid. The results showed that the lead contents of all examined samples were very low at a level of not detected to 0.033 mg/L, and below 2 mg/kg, the Korean regulatory limit for the commodity. Also, no increase in lead content was observed over the elapsed time. Therefore, it appears that lead is not a hazard and need not be a concern in drinking canned coffee.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the dietary intake and blood concentrations for examination of exposure levels and exposure characteristics of Cd and Pb via food among college students aged 20 years living in Busan area. Methods: Food duplicate per a day and venous blood samples were accepted from healthy man and women college students. The samples were analyzed with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results: Dietary intake of Cd and Pb in the participants were $17.5{\mu}g\;Cd/day$, $21.7{\mu}g\;Pb/day$. Blood concentrations were $2.01{\mu}g\;Cd/L$, $4.32{\mu}g\;Pb/dL$, respectively. Conclusions: Smoking and drinking habits might be high influential factors in 20 years college students. Dietary intake of Cd and Pb, however, from food group of seaweed, or fish and shellfish in 20 years college students were lower than that in any other age group.
A high temperature dilatometer attached to a graphite furnace is built and used to study the sintering behavior of $B_4C$. Pristine and carbon doped $B_4C$ compacts are sintered at various soaking temperatures and their shrinkage profiles are detected simultaneously using the dilatometer. Carbon additions enhance the sinterability of $B_4C$ with sintering to more than 97% of the theoretical density, while pristine $B_4C$ compacts could not be sintered above 91% due to particle coarsening. The shrinkage profiles of $B_4C$ reveal that the effect of carbon on the sinterability of $B_4C$ can be seen mostly below $1950^{\circ}C$. The high temperature dilatometer delivers very useful information which is impossible to obtain with conventional furnaces.

It is clear that monocrystalline Silicon (Si) ingots are the key raw material for semiconductors devices. In the present industries markets, most of monocrystalline Silicon (Si) ingots are made by Czochralski Process due to their advantages with low production cost and the big crystal diameters in comparison with other manufacturing process such as Float-Zone technique. However, the disadvantage of Czochralski Process is the presence of impurities such as oxygen or carbon from the quartz and graphite crucible which later will resulted in defects and then lowering the efficiency of Si wafer. The heat transfer plays an important role in the formation of Si ingots. However, the heat transfer generates convection in Si molten state which induces the defects in Si crystal. In this study, a crystal growth simulation software was used to optimize the Si crystal growth process. The furnace and system design were modified. The results showed the melt-crystal interface shape can affect the Si crystal growth rate and defect points. In this study, the defect points and desired interface shape were controlled by specific crystal growth rate condition.
Decomposition promoting factors and decomposition mechanism in the zinc decomposition process of waste hard metals which are composed mostly of tungsten carbide and cobalt were evaluated. Zinc volatility amount was suppressed and zinc valatilization pressure was produced in the reaction graphite crucible inside an electric furnace for ZDP. Reaction was done for 2 h at $650^{\circ}C$, which 100 % decomposed the waste hard metals that were over 30 mm thick. As for the separation-decomposition of waste hard metals, zinc melted alloy formed a liquid composed of a mixture of ${\gamma}-{\beta}1$ phase from the cobalt binder layer (reaction interface). The volume of reacted zone was expanded and the waste hard metal layer was decomposed-separated horizontally from the hard metal. Zinc used in the ZDP process was almost completely removed-collected by decantation and volatilization-collection process at $1000^{\circ}C$.
In this study, the porous ceramic filter was developed to be able to remove both dust and hazardous gas contained in fuel gas at high temperature. The porous ceramic filters were fabricated and used as a catalyst support. And the effects have been investigated such as the mean particle size, organic content and addition of foaming agent on the porosity, compressive strength and pressure drop of ceramic filters. With the increase of mean powder size and the organic content for the cordierite filter, the porosity was increased, but the compressive strength and pressure drop were decreased. From the results of the research, the optimum condition for the fabrication of ceramic filters could be acquired and they had the porosity of 58%, the compressive strength of 13.4 MPa and the pressure drop of 250 Pa. It was expected that this ceramic filter was able to be applied to the glass melting furnace, combustor, and dust/toxic gas removal filter.

ZnO nanostructures were synthesized by a vapor phase transport process in a single-zone furnace within a horizontal quartz tube with an inner diameter of 38 mm and a length of 485 mm. The ZnO nanostructures were grown on Au-catalyzed Si(100) substrates by using a mixture of zinc oxide and graphite powders. The growth of ZnO nanostructures was conducted at $800^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. High-purity Ar and $O_2$ gases were pushed through the quartz tube during the process at a flow rate of 100 and 10 sccm, respectively. The sequence of ON/OFF cycles of the Ar gas flow was repeated, while the $O_2$ flow is kept constant during the growth time. The Ar gas flow was ON for 1 min/cycle and that was OFF for 2 min/cycle. The structure and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent photoluminescence. The preferred orientation of the ZnO nanostructures was along c-axis with hexagonal wurtzite structure.
