  • The resveratrol contents in grapes showed a great variation according to the cultivars. In spite of it, a high resveratrol content in fruit was found generally in cultivars of Shigyoku, Pione, Muscat of Alexandria (black colored cultivars) and Muscatel Ruso, Gold Finger, Niunai (green colored cultivars). But in case included fruit stem and rachis, some cultivars, i.e. Shigyoku, Muscat of Alexandria and Baby Finger, showed relatively higher resveratrol content, and these cultivars could be advantageous for cultivation without chemical fungicide, because resveratrol was known as a phytoalexin. While resveratrol was not detected in fruit flesh, fruit stem and rachis contained considerably high content of resveratrol; that shows resveratrol may be synthesized in these parts.

  • The main grape producing regions in Korea were surveyed for the occurrence and relative incidence of crown gall disease on grapevine. The results of the survey showed that the disease tended to affect tetraploid cultivars, which produce a large and sweet fruit but are very weak to cold weather. Incidence of crown gall disease was high on the tetraploid cultivars, Kyoho (Gerbong), Daebong, and Black Olympia while it was low on the diploid cultivars, Cambell Early and Sheridan. The disease incidence was very high on Anseong, Cheonan, and Chincheon, where the major growing areas of tetraploid cultivars and grapevines were burried in the winter to protect from freeze injury, whereas it was low in Yungdong, Kimcheon, and Nonsan. Crown gall disease did not increased with grapevine age on both Cambell Early and Kyoho. It remained low in Cambell Early, but high for all ages on Kyoho, Galls were found on the crown region and mid part of the trunk, but more galls were on small branches and canes on Kyoho grapevines. More than one third of ZKyoho grapevines inspected had galls on multiple locations on grapevines. On Kyoho, 56.3% of the galls covered more than 50% of the crown gall disease affects severely on the cultivar.

  • Purpose - The production efficiency of agricultural crops has been the subject of numerous studies in the field of agricultural economics. This study examines the production efficiency of emerging vineyards in the 14 northern U.S. states and aims to understand raw input and managerial factors affecting the grape production with focusing on the effect of farm size. Research design, data, and methodology - Using a unique survey dataset that was collected from 176 vineyards in 2012, we employed data envelopment analysis (DEA) for estimation of production efficiency in individual vineyards. Production efficiency is regressed on various input and managerial covariates to understand factors influencing the productivity. Results - Although there exists positive correlation between the farm size and productivity of vineyards in Northern U.S. states, we find negative relationship when the farm size is instrumented by the additional farm size expansion indicator. The negative effect is more pronounced for the recently established vineyards. Conclusions - This study suggests that there needs to be adequate managerial improvements for emerging vineyards in northern states for the achievement of increased productivity.

  • In this study, Red pearl (4x) and MBA (2x) were crossed Gangwon-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2000 to compare the brewing characteristics of Cheonghyang, a seedless kind of grape registered in 2009, by maturity. Fruit characteristics of Cheonghyang were examined after the first racking and 300 days after fermentation during aging in manufacturing wine based on maturity categories of being immature, mature, and overmature after harvest between August 25 and 27, 2014. The soluble solid matter content did not differ between the first racking following manufacturing wine and during ripening, and the alcohol content following the first racking was 12.9% for immature ones, 13.0% for mature ones, and 12.7% for overmature ones., The alcohol content decreased by appropriately 1.3% to 1.8% during ripening. The total acidity content was 0.9% for immature ones, 0.8% for mature ones, and 0.5% for overmature ones following the first racking and showed insignificant variations during ripening of 0.8%, 0.7%, and 0.5%, respectively, with wine made from mature ones showing proper acidity. The volatile acid content following the first racking during ripening, showing insignificant variation by maturity; however, it decreased after ripening. The sensory evaluation detected differences in acidity of wine between mature and overmature grapes. There was no difference in sour taste between immature and mature grapes; however, overmature ones had low levels of sour taste. Our results showed that mature wine had the best overall preference.

  • To investigate the anti-diabetic activity of ethanol and aqueous peel and seed extracts obtained from three different grape species (Cambell Early, MBA, and Kyoho), alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity was examined. All extracts showed anti-diabetic activity, especially aqueous extract exhibited inhibitory effect above 70%. Thus, we used aqueous extract to check the potential hypoglycemic effects in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice model. The results showed that the blood glucose level of STZ-induced diabetic mice decreased drastically after 3 hr when the aqueous extract of Cambell Early seed was treated to the mice model. The aqueous extract of Kyoho seed lessened blood glucose level by 60%. Together, these data indicate that extracts of grape peel and seed (aqueous or ethanol) may have potential in improving hypoglycemic effects in the diabetic symptoms, suggesting that further investigation on biomarker expressions should be rewarding.

  • As a result of low temperature exotherm (LTE) measurement targeting the buds of 13 grape cultivars that are recently cultivated or introduced in Korea, 'Shooting Star', 'Muscat Bailey A', 'IFG-6', 'Vanessa Seedless', 'Summer Crispy', 'Shine Muscat', 'Jelly Pop', 'Campbell Early', 'Ruby Seedless', 'My Heart', 'Kyoho', 'Thompson Seedless', and 'Violet King' in order of being resistant to low temperatures. The LTE value was the lowest at -18.9℃ in 'Shooting Star' and the highest at -12.5℃ in 'Violet King'. Through these results, it can be used as basic data to determine whether or not cultivation by region is possible efficiently by comparing data based on 'Campbell Early' and 'Kyoho', which are presented as standard varieties for domestic cultivation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth and fruit characteristics of recently introduced or bred varieties in Korea and to review domestic adaptability. As for the sprouting rate among cultivars, 'Stella' was the highest at 91.6%, followed by 'My Heart' (78.3%), 'IFG-6' (77.3%), and 'Hongju Seedless' (73.2%). As for the flower incidence rate by cultivar, 'Stella' was the highest at 113.5%, and 'IFG-6' had a lower flower incidence at 45.3% compared to other cultivars. The diameter of shoots was less than 11.0 mm in the other three cultivars except for 'Hongju Seedless', and 'Hongju Seedless' was the thickest at 12.5 mm and 'Stella' was the thinnest at 9.6 mm. The berry weight of 'My Heart' was 11.3 g, heavier than other cultivars, followed by 'Stella', 'IFG-6' and 'Hongju Seedless'. Soluble sugar content at harvest time by cultivar was about 19.0°Bx or higher, with 'IFG-6' having the highest level of 20.2°Bx, followed by 'My Heart', 'Stella', and 'Hongju Seedless'. Acidity was the lowest in 'My Heart' at 0.39%, followed by 'IFG-6', 'Stella' and 'Hongju Seedless'. As for the coloring, in the case of 'My Heart', the skin color did not change to red even after the harvest season, therefore the grapes were irregularly colored, so it was judged that the development of cultivation technology to enhance the coloring was necessary.

  • This study was investigated the anthocyanin composition of 'Gaeryangmeoru', 'Kyoho', and 'Hongisul' grapes cultivated in Korea using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled to a mass spectrometer (MS) equipped with an ESI (electrospray ionization) source. 'Gaeryangmeoru' is a dark-blue grape used for winemaking that can reach its coloring in unfavorable weather. The 'Kyoho' and 'Hongisul' varieties are hybrid grapes that feature black and pink skin, respectively. The anthocyanins extracted from the peels of grapes were analyzed using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. Twenty-five anthocyanins were identified in the 'Gaeryangmeoru' and 'Kyoho' varieties, and 21 were identified in the 'Hongisul' variety. Eight, 14 and five predominant anthocyanins were identified in 'Gaeryangmeoru', 'Kyoho' and 'Hongisul' grape respectively. In all three varieties, mono-glucosides were 2.3-5.9 times more abundant than di-glucoside. Malvidin was the predominant anthocyanidin in 'Gaeryangmeoru' (44.1%) and 'Kyoho' (56.5%), but cyanidin (96.8%) was in 'Hongisul'. The acylated anthocyanins in 'Gaeryangmeoru' (2.0%) were rare, whereas acylated anthocyanins with p-coumaric acid were predominant in 'Kyoho' (40.9%) and 'Hongisul' (70.7%). In particular, cyanidin feruloyl glucoside was found only in the 'Hongisul' cultivar and considered to be useful as a criterion for identification of the variety. As a result, the grape varieties were demonstrated to have variety-specific anthocyanin characteristics, enabling classification based on anthocyanin composition in terms of anthocyanidins, glucosylation and acylation. The taxonomical application of anthocyanin composition confirmed the possibility that 'Gaeryangmeoru' originated from Vitis amurensis or its hybrids, and the 'Hongisul' grape was distinguished from other grapes by cyanidin feruloyl glucoside.

  • This study was conducted to investigate optimal crop loads of 'Jinok' grape for unheated plastic house culture. The crop loads of 'Jinok' grapes were managed to be 1.3, 1.8, 2.2, 2.4, and 2.6t per 10a from 2012 to 2014. We measured vine growth and berry qualities. Crop loads were not significantly affected on plant height, trunk diameter, shoot length, and the internode length of 'Jinok'. However, the maturation of berries was delayed when the crop load was higher. And the harvest date was earlier about three weeks in an unheated plastic house compared to in an open field. The average berry weight was decreased by the higher crop load although higher crop loads made higher yields showing the lowest weight at 342g with the treatment of 2.6t per 10a and the highest weight at 363g with the treatment of 1.3t per 10a. Also, the soluble solids content showed a tendency that higher crop loads brought to lower degree Brix. The contents of P, K, Ca, and Mg in grape leaves and shoots were not significantly different by crop loads. To sum up, when crop loads were under the 2.4t per 10a, the berries were harvested as a marketable fruit having $15^{\circ}Brix$ in the cultivar 'Jinok' grape. This result could help to increase grower's benefit having improved quality of fruit for the sustainable production by the established cultivation techniques for the newly developed cultivar 'Jinok'.

  • This study was conducted to investigate several indicators of fruit maturity, and expert sensory evaluation was done to determine the most appropriate maturity time for the new Korea grape cultivar 'doonuri' for high quality winemaking. The grape component changed dramatically during ripening, after veraison. Considerable drops in berry firmness (<0.60 kgf/$cm^2$) and titratable acidity (<0.66%) were found at the ripening stage while the soluble solid content significantly increased in the ripening process. Most of the organic acids contained were tartaric and malic acid. The malic acid content was about twice the tartaric acid content in the fruit-growing period but was less than the tartaric acid content in the maturity period. The total anthocyanin and polyphenol contents increased sharply after veraison. In particular, the total anthocyanin and polyphenol contents reached their maximum levels when the acidity was 0.55%, and after that, there was almost no change. Correlations between anthocyanin accumulation and several factors were found in sugar 0.7811 (p<0.05), pH 0.9315 (p<0.05), and Brix/acid ratio 0.9409 (p<0.05). $Brix{\times}pH^2$ and brix/acid ratio were used as indicators of the proper maturation of the grapes when the acidity was 0.53 to 0.55%, and at sugar 17 Brix. When surveyed, the quality characteristics and sensory evaluation of the wine made using the latest harvested grapes showed the most reliable sourness. The color, aroma, and overall harmony of the wine, however, were evaluated to be the best when the wine acidity was about 0.60% or when the grape acidity was below 0.55%.
