Entering the 20th century since the industrial revolution, the cement has been widely used in the field of construction and civil engineering due to the remarkable development of construction industry. However, result from that development, each kind of industrial by-products and waste and the carbon dioxide generated in the process of cement production cause air pollution and environmental damage so earth is getting sick now slowly. Therefore, we have to recognize importance about this. It means that the time taking specific and long-term measures have come. In this research paper, as substitution of the cement generating environmental pollution, we investigate the hydration reaction of non-Sintered Cement mortar mixed with GBFS, active stimulant of alkaline and sulphate series by using SEM and XRD, mechanical and chemical properties according to the curing method. As a result of this experiment, NSC realized outstanding strength for water curing and steam curing. It means that it has a good possibility as substitution of cement. From now on, it can be used for structure satisfying specific standard. We expect to find a substitution of outstanding cement by progressing continuous research making the best use of pros and cons according to the curing method.

Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. Many researchs on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the sources of material such as fly ash, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effect reduction of $CO_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the fluidity, air content and compressive strength of mortar on alkaline activator in order to develop cementless fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag based alkali-activated mortar with superplasticizer. In view of the results, we found out that Pn of fluidity and compressive strength is the best in four type of superplasticizer, and PNS of powder type of fluidity is better than that of liquid type in the case of AA.

Recently, lots of researches on concrete with high volume mineral admixture such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) have been carried out to reduce $CO_2$. It is known that the precast concrete has an advantage of high strength at early age due to steam curing, even if concrete has high replacement level of mineral admixture. However it demands the investigation of compressive strength properties according to steam curing regimens. In this study, concretes with water-binder ratio of 32, 35% and water content of 135, 150, $165kg/m^3$ were produced to investigate compressive strength properties of high volume (60% by mass) GGBFS cement concrete according to steam curing regimens. Then steam curing was implemented with the maximum temperature of 50, $60^{\circ}C$ and steaming time of 5, 6, 7 hours. From the test results, it was found that steam curing was effective to raise early strength of high volume GGBFS cement concrete, but 28 day compressive strengths of steam cured specimens were lower than those of water cured specimens. Thus, a further study would be needed for the optimum steam curing regimens to satisfy target demolded strength and specified strength for the application of high volume GGBFS cement concrete to precast concrete members.
The concrete cracking from the restrained stress caused by the shrinkage may play significant cause of deterioration of concrete structures by allowing the permeation of sulphate and chloride ions which in turn triggers corrosion of steel reinforcement. In particular, the cracking becomes more critical as water binder ratio (W/B) is reduced and concrete strength increases. Therefore, it needs to evaluate correctly the comprehensive shrinkage behavior of concrete with high strength: high-strength concrete (HSC), ultra-highstrength concrete (UHSC). The unrestrained shrinkage tests, however, cannot estimate the net shrinkage effectively which affects cracking after full development of strength and stiffness because it does not consider the degree of restraint, strength development, stress relaxation, and so on. Therefore, in this study, both free and restrained shrinkage tests with variables of W/B (W/B of 30, 25 and 16%) and admixtures (fly ash (FA) and granulated blast-furnace slag (BFS)) for HSC, very-high-strength concrete (VHSC) and UHSC were performed. The test results indicated that the autogenous shrinkage and total shrinkage at drying condition were reduced as W/B increased and FA, BFS were added, and the cracking behavior was suppressed as W/B increased and FA was added.

This paper studies the early-aged chloride binding capacity of various blended concretes including OPC(ordinary Portland cement), PFA(pulversied fly ash), GGBFS(ground granulated blast furnace slag) and SF(silica fume) cement paste. Cement pastes with 0.4 of a free water/binder ratio were cast with chloride admixed in mixing water, which ranged from 0.1 to 3.0% by weight of cement and different replacement ratios for the PFA, GGBFS and SF were used. The content of chloride in each paste was measured using water extraction method after 7 days curing. It was found that the chloride binding capacity strongly depends on binder type, replacement ratio and total chloride content. An increase in total chloride results in a decrease in the chloride binding, because of the restriction of the binding capacity of cement matrix. For the pastes containing maximum level of PFA(30%) and GGBFS(60%) replacement in this study, the chloride binding capacity was lower than those of OPC paste, and an increase in SF resulted in decreased chloride binding, which are ascribed to a latent hydration of pozzolanic materials and a fall in the pH of the pore solution, respectively. The chloride binding capacity at 7 days shows that the order of the resistance to chloride-induced corrosion is 30%PFA > 10%SF > 60%GGBFS > OPC, when chlorides are internally intruded in concrete. In addition, it is found that the binding behaviour of all binders are well described by both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms.
This study investigated the fluidity, heat of hydration, setting time, strength development, and characteristics of hydration and pozzolanic reactions of high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBFS) blended cement pasts with the water-to-binder ratio of 20% by experiments, and analyzed the effects of the replacement ratio and fineness of GGBFS on the hydration and pozzolanic reaction. The results show that, in the high-strength mixtures with low water-to-binder ratio, the initial hydration is accelerated due to the "dilution effect" which means that the free water to react with cement increases by the replacement of cement by GGBFS, and thus, strengths at from 3 to 28 days were higher than those of plain mixtures with ordinary Portland cement only. Whereas it was found that the long term strength development is limited because the hydration reaction rates rapidly decreases with ages and the degree of pozzolanic reaction is lowered due to insufficient supply of calcium hydroxide according to large replacement of cement by GGBFS. Also, the GGBFS with higher fineness absorbs more free water, and thus it decreases the fluidity, the degree of hydration, and strength. These results are different with those of normal strength concrete, and therefore, should be verified for concrete mixtures. Also, to develop the high-strength concrete with high-volume of GGBFS, the future research to enhance the long-term strength development is needed.

To develop high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) concrete, this study investigated the characteristics of strength development and durability of concrete with the water-to-binder ratio of 23% and the GGBFS replacement ratio of up to 65%. The results show that the compressive strength of GGBFS blended concrete is lower than that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete up to 3-day age, but the becomes higher after 7-day age. Together with strength increase, the pore structure becomes tighter, and thus the resistance to chloride ion penetration increases. Therefore, the GGBFS blended concrete has high resistance to freezing and thawing without additional air-entraining, and high resistance to carbonation despite low amount of calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$). On the other hand, if silica fume (SF) is blended with GGBFS, the strength becomes lower than that of the concrete blended with GGBFS only, and the resistance to chloride ion penetration deceases. Therefore, it needs further studies on the reaction of SF in high-strength high-volume GGBFS concrete.

The use of ternary blended cement consisting of Portland cement, granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash has been on the rise to improve marine concrete structure's resistance to chloride attack. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate changes in chloride attack resistibility of concrete through NT Build 492-based chloride migration experiments and test of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration under ASTM C 1202(KS F 2271) when 1.5-2.0% of alkali-sulfate activator (modified alkali sulfate type) was added to the ternary blended cement mixtures (40% ordinary Portland cement + 40% GGBFS + 20% fly ash). Then, the results found the followings: Even though the slump for the plain concrete slightly declined depending on the use of the alkali-sulfate activator, compressive strength from day 2 to day 7 improved by 17-42%. In addition, the coefficient from non-steady-state migration experiments for the plain concrete measured at day 28 decreased by 36-56% depending on the use of alkali-sulfate. Furthermore, total charge passed according to the test for electrical indication of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration decreased by 33-62% at day 7 and by 31-48% at day 28. As confirmed in previous studies, reactivity in the GGBFS and fly ash improved because of alkali activation. As a result, concrete strength increased due to reduced total porosity.

Cement industry is typical carbon-emission industry. If the industrial by-products(granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash, etc.) are used a large amount, it might be able to reduce cement consumption and mitigate carbon emissions. In this case, however, decrease of early strength is relatively large. Therefore, there is a limitation in increase of the amount of substitute. Considering these circumstances, it would be a good solution to reduce carbon emissions in cement industry to improve the performances of mixed cement through proper alkali-activation in Portland blended cement using GGBFS or fly ash. Therefore, this study prepared concrete in ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities with an addition of a binder which used 2.0% modified alkali sulfate activator after mixing Portland cement, GGBFS and fly ash in the ratio of 4:4:2 and assessed its basic properties. The results found the followings: The use of modified alkali-sulfate activator slightly reduced slump and shortened setting time. As a result, bleeding capacity decreased while early strength improved. In addition, there is no big difference in carbonation resistance. It appears that there should be continued experiments and analyses on the related long-term aged specimens.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the physical properties and self-healing effects of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars(EMMs) using ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS). The EMMs with GGBFS were prepared with various polymer-binder ratios and GGBFS contents, and tested for strengths, adhesion in tension, water permeation and self-healing effects. The conclusions obtained from the test results are summarized as follows. The compressive strength of the EMMs with GGBFS is reduced with increasing polymer-binder ratios because of reduction of the degree of hardening in the EMMs, and is somewhat inferior to that of unmodified mortars. In the flexural and tensile strengths, the flexural strength of the EMMs is almost constant with increasing polymer-binder ratios. However, the tensile strength of the EMMs is gradually increased with increasing polymer-binder ratios. Regardless of the GGBFS contents, the adhesion in tension of the EMMs increases sharply with increasing polymer-binder ratios. The water permeation of the EMMs is remarkably reduced with increasing polymer-binder ratios and GGBFS contents. The self-healing effect of the hardener-free EMMs with GGBFS is improved with increasing water immersion period at a GGBFS content of 20%.
