  • The objective of this study was to clarify the possibility of adsorption trichloroethylene (TCE) of pretreated granular activated carbon (GAC). The chemical solution used for the acidic treatment was phosphoric acid. In addition, the effect of ultrasound on GAC assessed in this experiments. It was observed that the adsorption of TCE were different based on pH value of pretreated GAC. However, natural water such as groundwater has various factors like ionic strength and hardness etc. Therefore, more laboratory work is needed to study about pretreated GAC.

  • Membrane process has been one of the widely applied wastewater treatment options, especially in field. However, one of the tricky issues in the process is to treat concentrates generated from reverse osmosis (RO) system in a manner of saving cost with maximum efficiency for treating a wide range of contaminants. Stimulated with the challenging issues, we have conducted a series of experimental studies in the evaluation for removing organics and nutrients using activated carbon. Results indicated that while powdered activated carbon (PAC) efficiently removed organics and the extent of removal was proportional to the PAC dosage, little removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was observed despite increasing the PAC dose. Interestingly, applying PAC was superior in removing organics than using granular activated carbon (GAC). These results suggest smaller particle size with higher surface area could provide greater chemical reactivity in removing organics.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Tharonil on granular activated carbon were experimentally investigated in an adsorber and in a packed column. It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of Tharonil on granular activated carbon was more successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation than Langmuir isotherm equation in the concentration range from 1 to 1000 mg/1. Intraparticle diffusivities (pore and surface diffusivity) of Tharonil were estimated by the concentration-time curve and adsorption isotherm. The estimated values of pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity are $6.70{\times}10^{-6}$ and $2.0{\times}10^{-9}cm^2/s$, respectively. From comparison of intraparticle diffusivities, it was found that surface diffusion was the limiting step for adsorption rate. The break time and breakthrough curve predicted by constant pattern-linear driving force model were shown to agree with the experimental results.

  • Recently, our circumstances are threatened by an accident that leakage of under ground storage tank and illegal dumping of synthetic organic compounds at chemical plants and many treatment methods, Activated carbon adsorption, Ozonization, Membrane filtration and Photocatalystic oxidation, are developed to remove such a synthetic organic compounds. And it has reported that Activated carbon adsorption have a great removal efficiency to nondegradable matters and organic compounds which have a high molecular weight. Comparing with other adsorbents, Activated carbon adsorption have a worse efficiency when ad desorption speed is low. Thus improved type of adsorbents was invented and one of those is Activated Carbon Filter. The purpose of this study was getting information about adsorption characteristic phenol which can be applied Activated Carbon Fiber and Granular Activated Carbon. In detail, With comparing removal characteristics of phenol in the presence Humic Acid using Activated Carbon Fiber(ACF) and Granular Activated. Carbon(GAC), it is to certify an effective application of Activated Carbon Fiber. At the range of this study, Batch test, Isotherm adsorption test and Factorial analysis, following conclusion were obtained from the results of this study. Batch test was carried to know time of adsorption equilibrium. In this study about time of adsorption equilibrium by ACF was faster than GAC's, for developed micropore of ACF. From the result of phenol adsorption test, High removal rate of adsorption is shown at pH 5. The result of lsotherm adsorption test, it has represented that the Freundlich's isotherm is most suitable one in others, that a ACF's adsorption capacity is more excellent than GAC's. Adsorption of phenol exiting humic acid is decreased getting raised humic acid concentration. Since ACF's micropore is developed at this time, an effect of high molecular humic acid is lower. Factorial analysis was carried to know about Main effect which was injection dosage of adsorbent in the range of this study.

  • Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) has been proven to be an excellent material for many industrial applications. A systematic study has been carried out of the kinetics of physical as well as chemical activation of phenolic resin chars. Physical activation was carried out using $CO_2$ and chemical activation using KOH as activating agent. There are number of factors which influence the rate of activation. The activation temperature and residence time at HTT varied in the range $550{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ and $\frac{1}{2}{\sim}8$ hrs respectively. Kinetic studies show that the rate of chemical activation is 10 times faster than physical activation even at much lower temperature. Above study show that the chemical activation process is suitable to prepare granular activated carbon with very high surface area i.e.$ 2895\;m^2/g$ in short duration of time i.e. 1 to 2 hrs at lower temperature i.e. $750^{\circ}C$ from phenolic resins.

  • The various pretreatment processes were evaluated to remove organic pollutants of weathered oil contaminated seawater(WOCS) for reverse osmosis desalination process, Biodegradation, coagulation, ultrafiltration, advanced oxidation processes and granular activated carbon filtration were used to evaluate the potential of organic pollutants removal in WOCS. Dissolved Organic Carbon(DOC) was almost not removed by biodegradation in WOCS. DOC was removed by 25% and 10% with the addition of $FeCl_3$ and PAC in WOCS, respectively. The removal efficiency using ultrafiltration(WOCS 500) was about 20% of DOC and 40% of $E_{260}$, respectively. In AOP application of WOCS, the removal of organic materials was improved up to 60% by the combination of $UV/O_3$ compared to UV process. However, 98% of DOC in woes could be removed by granular activated carbon filtration. It is revealed that activated carbon filtration is the best process for the pretratment of DOC removal.

  • Erythrosine is used a food coloring, ink and dye, etc. but erithrosine is rarely used in United States due to its known hazards. The adsorption characteristics of erythrosine by granular activated carbon were investigated in the batch adsorber and the packed column. The adsorptivity of activated carbon for erythrosine were largely improved by pH control. When the pH was 11 in the sample, the erythrosine could be removed 98% of initial concentration. It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of erythrosine on granular activated carbon was successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation in the concentration range from 10mg/L to 1,000mg/L. The characteristics of breakthrough curve of activated carbon packed column depend on the design variables such as initial concentration, bed height, and flow rate.
