The materials of sculptured stone property around the Hyeonleung Royal Tomb in Guri consist mainly of high weathered of granitic rocks with magnetite-series. Deterioration characteristics occurred highly with microorganism, soil inflow and black contaminants at the burial mound zone. As a result of deterioration evaluation, stone surface around the burial mound zone show serious comprehensive damage of soil inflow (50.5%) and lichen coverage (47.6%) which are the major damaging factors, and there are about 8.6% of biological growth noticeably in the north side. Surface contaminants and the discoloration had the complex causes. Gypsum occurred between joints of stones and the major contaminant type, darkening which was analyzed organic bodies caused discoloration. From result of ultrasonic velocity measurements, there are mean value of 2,195 m/s with highly weathered (HW) grade. Most of the stone properties showed 4 to 5 weathered grade. Therefore, it turned out that sculpture stone properties require conservation treatments. To remove soil accelerating damage factors and lichen occupying high percents, the cleaning process is necessary and consolidation, rejoining and filling are needed as well. Also, consideration on removing conservation materials containing Ca and e fflorescence is required and retreatments need to be considered.
The talc ore deposits can be divided into chloritic and dolomitic ores according to mineral assemblages. The former is mainly composed of chlorite and talc accompanied with dolomite, muscovite and opaque mineral, and the latter of dolomite and talc with serpentine, calcite and magnesite in places. Talc was originated from chlorite and serpentine. Carbonate minerals were formed either directly from the introduced hydrothermal solution or secondarily as a by-product of steatitization of chlorite and serpentine. The process of talc formation may be governed by the chemical composition of the host rocks and the amount and/or chemical composition of the hydrothermal solution which may be different in places. However, the representative reactions producing talc from chlorite and serpentine are as follows : (1) chlorite+$Mg^{++}+Si^{4+}+H_2O$=talc, (2) chlorite+$Mg^{++}+Si^{4+}+Ca^{++}+CO_2+O_2+H_2O$=talc+ dolomite+ magnesite, and (3) serpentine +$Mg^{++}+Fe^{++}+Si^{4+}+Ca^{++}+CO_2+H_2O$=talc+dolomite. The reactions indicate that the carbonate minerals can be formed when the hydrothermal solution have high $fO_2$ and $fCO_2$. The steatitization might be proceeded by the hydrothermally metasomatic reaction between chlorite schist or chlorite gneiss intercalated in the granitic gneiss and hydrothermal solution accompanied to the wet granitization.
Recently, the development of accurate gravity-meter and GPS make it possible to obtain high resolution gravity data. Though gravity data interpretation like modeling and inversion has significantly improved, gravity data processing itself has improved very little. Conventional gravity data processing removes gravity effects due to mass and height difference between base and measurement level. But, it would be a biased density model when some or whole part of anomalous bodies exist above the base level. We attempted to make a multiquadric surface of the survey area from topography with DEM (Digital Elevation Map) data. Then we constituted rectangular blocks which reflect real topography of the survey area by the multiquadric surface. Thus, we were able to carry out 3-D inversions which include information of topography. We named this technique, 3-D Gravity Terrain Inversion (3DGTI). The model test showed that the inversion model from 3DGTI made better results than conventional methods. Furthermore, the 3-dimensional model from the 3DGTI method could maintain topography and as a result, it showed more realistic geologic model. This method was also applied on real field data in Masan-Changwon area. Granitic intrusion is an important geologic characteristic in this area. This method showed more critical geological boundaries than other conventional methods. Therefore, we concluded that in the case of various rocks and rugged terrain, this new method will make better model than convention ones.
The characteristics of hydrogeochemistry and fluorine distribution in drinking groundwater from limestone and granite were studied in the Keumsan-Wanju area, where major important fluorite-deposits are distributed. The hydrochemical properties of groundwater from studied area arc commonly characterized as $Ca-HC0_3$ water type. However, some of the groundwater samples collected from Jurassic and Cretaceuus granites belong to $Ca-Na-HC0_3 and Na-HC0_3$ type, respectively. The contamination of drinking groundwater by minewater from the nearby fluorite deposits is not found yet. However, groundwater having high F contents up to 1].4 mgll, which is higher than the drinking water limit, is found from the wells located in Cretaceous granite. The tluorine contents in groundwater generally increase with increasing well depth. The concentrations of F in the groundwater show a positive relationship with the values of Na, $HC0_3, Cl. Si0_2$, pH, whereas a negative relationship with Ca. The positive correlation of F-concentrations to major elements ($Si0_2$, Na, CI) and trace elements (Li, B, Rb) may suggest that the groundwater come from the decomposition of tluoride-bearing silicate minerals within highly differentiated granitic rocks, Therefore, wells for drinking water should not be developed or should be drilled within shallow level in the Cretaceous granite region to reduce the F contents in the groundwater.
To understand behavior of fault cores in the field of geotechnical and geological engineering, we present an investigation of the physical properties (breccia and clay contents, unit weight, porosity, and water content) and friction characteristics (internal friction angle and cohesion) of fault cores, in granitic, sedimentary, and volcanic rocks in South Korea. The breccia contents in the fault cores are positively correlated with unit weight and negatively correlated with clay content, porosity, and water content. The inter-quartile ranges of internal friction angles and cohesion calculated from direct shear tests are 16.7-38.1° and 2.5-25.3 kPa, respectively. The influence of physical properties on the friction characteristics of the fault cores was analyzed and showed that in all three rock types the internal friction angles are positively correlated with breccia content and unit weight, and negatively correlated with clay content, porosity, and water content. In contrast, the cohesions of the fault cores are negatively correlated with breccia content and unit weight, and positively correlated with clay content, porosity, and water content.
This paper deals mainly with the genesis and classification of the Jeonnam series. These soils have brown to dark brown silt loam and silty clay loam A horizon(strong brown or reddish brown where eroded). Argillic B horizons are dominantly red or yellowish red silty clay loam to silty clay with moderately developed subangular blocky structure and with thin clay cutans on the ped faces. The C horizons are strongly and very deeply weathered strong brown, yellowish brown, pale brown and reddish yellow silty clay loam and sandy loam granitic saprolite. Content of clay increases with depth to a maximum between 100cm. Percolating water seems to be responsible for transportation and oriented deposition of clay. Chemically, soil reaction is strongly acid to medium acid throughout the profile. The content of organic matter is 1 to 2 percent, and decreases regularly with depth. Base saturation is low, based on amount of extractable cations. Characterisltically the Jeonnam series are similar to Red-Yellow Podzolic soils of the United States and are similar to Red-Yellow soils of the Japan. In the writer's opinion the Jeonnam soils are classified as Red Yellow soils. According to USDA 7th approximation, this soil can be classified as Typic Hapludults and in the FAO/UNESCO World Soil Map as Helvic Acrisols.
This study was conducted to measure the uranium concentrations in urine of some members of the general public in Busan and Daejeon and to assess the annual committed effective doses from uranium analysis of daily excretion. As a result, the ranges of total uranium concentrations in the urine for the residents in Busan and Daejeon were found to be 0.556 - 1.53 $mBq\;L^{-1}$ and 2.18 - 4.55 $mBq\;L^{-1}$, respectively. It was noted that the uranium concentrations for the residents in Daejeon were observed to be higher than those for the residents in Busan. This result assumes that the uranium concentrations in the urines for the residents in Daejeon are probably related to the high uranium concentrations contained in the drinking water of Daejeon city. The bedrock of Daejeon, known as granitic rocks formed in the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic Era, contains high uranium contents. Also, results showed no significant correlation with age or sex. The ranges of annual committed effective doses from ingestion of uranium for the residents in Busan and Daejeon were calculated to be 0.472-1.41 ${\mu}Sv$ and 1.99-4.15 ${\mu}Sv$, respectively.
Marine total magnetic intensity over the southern part of the Ulleung Basin and geomagnetic data measured at a land base station are analyzed. Fourteen days observation of geomagnetic field at a fixed on-land base station showed how the geomagnetic field around the study area behaves. geomagnetic data at the base station can also be used as correction data for a diurnal variation. Magnetic anomalies in the study area do not reflect an effect of sea bottom topography but mainly subsurface basement. The southern part of the Ulleung Basin can be devided into two zones according to a different anomaly pattern; along the coastal shelves the isolated anomalies with a short wave and a strong amplitude are dominant, and toward the open sea the anomalies become much more subdued. The high anomaly zone adjoined to land is interpreted to be caused by granitic intrusives or volcanic rocks, and the weak anomaly zone to the outer sea to be arisen from an existence of deep basement. A spectrum analysis is applied to estimate magnetic basement depths from three anomaly profiles with a long period and a weak amplitude toward the outer sea. The calculated depths are 7.0km, 5.0km, and 2.6km respectively from outer profile. The basement might be correlated with the mixed layer of tuff, basalt, and sediment, which had been defined as L-2 layer in the Yamato basin and the Japan Basin.

Most crystalline rocks have much higher compressive strength than tensile strength and show brittle failure. In-situ rock mass, strong enough in general sense, often fails in brittle manner when subjected to high stress exceeding strength in due of geometrically induced stress concentration or of high initial stress. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the brittle failure characteristics of rock and rock mass for proper stability assessment of underground structures excavated in great depths. In this study, damage controlled tests were conducted on biotite-granite and granitic gneiss, which are the two major crystalline rock types in Korea, to obtain the strain dependency characteristics of the cohesion and friction angle. A Cohesion-Weakening Friction-Strengthening (CWFS hereafter) model for each rock type was constructed and a series of compression tests were carried out numerically while varying confining pressures. The same tests were also conducted assuming the rock is Mohr-Coulomb material and results were compared.

There is a limestone basin surrounded by the mountains consisted of Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in the Masung, Munkyung city, Kyungsangpook do. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the geomorphic processes of the gentle hillslopes in the marginal piedmont of Masung basin. To do so, I analyzed deposits over hillslopes and the relation ship between the distance from the divide and the height(above sea level) at the longitudinal profile of the hillslope, and considered interrelation between the distributions of the gentle hillslopes(less than 230m) and lithology. Geomorphic processes of Masung basin are as follow: (1) The depth of deposits over hillslope increases toward downstream of the hillslope. Most gravels within deposits, whose lithology is limestone, are those eroded at the boundary(overthrust fault zone) between the back-mountain and the hillslope. Deposits at the outward margin of hillslope is well sorted. and moderately imbricated. (2) Hillslope at the margin of the basin(160-230m asl) is formed by the action of 'the flow with channel'. At the boundary between the soft rock(limestone; basin floor) and hard rock(sedimentary and metamorphic rock; back-mountain), the relatively weak limestone is eroded to fresh bedrock by the subsequent action of the overland flow, and therefore discontinuity in slope appeared. (3) After hills lopes were formed, sediments(boulders and fine material) produced during dissection in back-mountain buried deposits over hillslope. In conclusion, geomorphic processes of Masung basin is 'differential erosion due to differentiation of lithological hardness' having suggested as geomorphic processes of granitic basin. However it is not 'removal of weathering material due to sheetflow' but 'erosion due to the overland flow with channel'.
