There are substantial difficulties in assessing the volume of soill/rock to be excavated and the cost thereof, which is attributable to the subjective and qualitative methods of rock mass classification prevailing at the moment. This paper intends to introduce more objective and quantitative rock mass classification method easily applicable to the excavation of granites in Muakjae, Seoul. As a result of such study it is proven that Schmidt hammer and point load strength tests are fairly reliable and easily applicable to estimate and quantify uniaxial compressive strength of granitic material in Seoul. In an efforts to confirm the granitic rock mass conditions in 12 meters underground, seismic refraction surveys were made on the top of vertical exposures from where underlying rock mass conditions could be directly inspected. Rock mass boundaries determined by seismic refraction methods were found to agree within a 1m variance with visible differences in rock mass conditions in the vertical exposure beneath the test site. Thus it can be concluded that detailed geotechnical mapping on cutting slopes is a most efficient, dependable and cost-effective technique in assessing likely excavation conditions of shallow granitic mass in Seoul.
In this study, the change in hydraulic conductivity according to the changes in the contact area, aperture, confining pressure and temperature was observed to improve the reliability of the analysis of underground water flow. Also, the mechanical and thermal properties of domestic crystalline rocks in a great depth were obtained. It was found that the averaged intial aperture ranged from 544.33${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 898.62${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and it followed a log-normal distribution. The hydraulic conductivity decreased with the increase of normal stress on the fracture surface and the hydraulic conductivity decreased as temperature increased. The change in hydraulic conductivity was strongly correlated with the change in contact area. It was verified by experiments that hydraulic conductivity was inversely proportional to the contact area. The measured mechanical and thermal properties were very close to the existing typical properties of domestic granites.
Ductile shear zones developed in Jurassic granites in the Yonggwang area show NE trend at the eastern part and nearly EW trend at the western part, respectively. Judged from shear sense indicators, they have resulted from dextral strike-slip movement. The intersection of both trends is thought to be due to the truncation and offset of NE shear zone Chonju Shear zone by the brittle Yonggwang fault which runs in near EW direction with sinistral movement sense. The simple shear deformation was predominate through the deformation in this ductile shear zone. Based on this deformation mechanism, the shear strain (${\gamma}$) estimated in domain 1 increases from 0.14 at the shear zone margin to 9.41 toward the center of shear zone. Total displacement obtained only from this measured section(JK 59 to JK14) appecars to be 1434.5 meters. The sequential development of microstructures can be divided into three stages; weakly-foliated, well-foliated and banded-foliated stages. In the weakly-foliated stage dislocation glide mechanism might be predominant. In the well-foliated stage grain boundary migration and progressive misorientation of subgrains was remarkable during dynamic recovery and recrystallization. In the banded-foliated stage grain boundary sliding and microfracturing mechanisms accompanied with crushing and cracking were marked. According to strain analysis from quartzites of the metasedimentary rocks, strain intensity (${\gamma}$) of the samples within the ductile shear zone ranges from 2.7 to 5.7, while that of the samples out of the ductile shear zone appears to be about 1.7.
A survey was performed to evaluate the distribution of radon concentrations in groundwater of South Korea. Groundwaters of 615 wells were sampled for this study during the four years from 1999 to 2002. The results showed radon values ranging from 4 pCi/L to 40,010 pCi/L with a mean and a median of 1,862 pCi/L and 920 pCi/L, respectively. The samples were classified into five groups according to the rock types; granite, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, Ogcheon metamorphic rocks, and Cheju volcanics. Mean radon concentrations were highest (2,595 pCi/L) in granites and lowest (238 pCi/L) in Cheju volcanic rocks. The groundwaters generally showed the highest radon content (2,298 pCi/L) in the weathered and the fractured bedrock complex and the lowest level (672 pCi/L) in the alluvium. The results showed that the radon concentrations in South Korea are low relative to those reported from other countries. But further investigations are suggested to confirm our results.
It is very important for successful construction to estimate the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground accurately and reasonably. However, it is very difficult to quantify the weathering degree of weathered ground at the field, so that the soil volume conversion factor used in Korea is often dependent upon the standard of foreign countries. Besides, the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground has been rarely studied and the use and accuracy of the soil volume conversion factor have been questioned persistingly. This study suggests a simple but robust method for estimating the soil volume conversion factor and measuring the weathering degree reasonably, and attempts to establish the utilization of a soil volume conversion factor measurement system based on experimental and analytical results. We made relationship between electrical resistivity and weathering degree presented from weathering index obtained through laboratory tests using field samples, and an estimation method of in-situ weathering degree for granites and a calculation method of soil volume conversion factor using electrical resistivity. And also, we suggested the photogrametry measurement-equipment system for measuring the volume of cargo box and the application plan of stand equipment and RFID for calculating the earth volume and distinguishing buggies in order to design the measurement system for soil volume conversion factor applicable to the field. Ultimately, the Weathered Earth-work Management Program (WEMP) was developed, so field managers may easily obtain the information about earth volume and soil volume conversion factor at the weathered ground.
In Mujoo area, the granitic pegmatites are developed in the granitic gneiss complex with Jurassic gneissic granites, where Nb-Ta mineralization were reported. Pegmatites are mainly composed of large crystals of quartz, feldspars of end-member orthoclase and albite, and muscovite. Nb-Ta minerals in study area are columbite (Nb > Ta) in composition. Chemistry of muscovites shows post-magmatic in origin and they are closely related with columbite. Large columbite, in pegmatites occurred with quartz and feldspars, while microcrystalline columbite is associated with muscovite. The Nb contents in large columbite are relatively higher than those in microcrystalline ones. Two pegmatites, 4~15 m in width and 120 m, 250 m in extension respective1y, are developed. Five drilling cores with total 600 m in length are finally obtained and revealed no possible potential for economic rare metals of Na-Ta deposits.
A petrological study has been done in the pyeongchang-Jaecheon area which is a northwestern part of the basement of Ogcheon zone for the purpose of comparison of the area to the Nogjeon-Yeongchun area which is the antipodal basement of the zone in the petrological and geotectonical view points. The major units of the area are Precambrian granitic gneissic complex, banded gneiss, linea ted leucocratic gneiss and pegmatitic leucogranitic gneiss in the west, elongated exposure of quartz schist (or partly quartzite) and phyllite, named as Jungdaegal-bong Group correlated to the lower sequence of Joseon Group, in the middle, and limestone and calcic dolomite, Iptanri Formation, correlated to the middle of Joseon Group in the east. Igneous plutons are distributed in the areas of gneissic complex and limestone formation as well as in the Eosangcheon and Daedaeri areas in the southeastern out of the area. Present study reveals that the gneissic complex are the products of granitization to metamorphism of amphibolite facies in the order of above mentioned from the metasediments of schists and calcareous rocks. A notable characteristics of the phyllite of Jungdaegal-bong Group is the presence of syntectonically segregated quartz rods in the forms of lens, swirl or boudinage in evenly distributed in the phyllitic to chloritic matrix. Igneous rocks range in composition from gabbro through diorite, granodiorite, to schistosed and porphyritic granites in stock and dike. The orogenic movement of the Ogcheon zone initiated in the middle Proterozoic time, pre-sedimentation of Ogcheon Group and superposed the granitization in Permian, Jurassic Daebo orogeny with granitic batholiths and stocks, and Cretaceous plutonic intrusion.
Regional geology of Chungil mine is composed of Cretaceous biotite granite. Chungil ore deposits are fissure filled quartz veins which developed in Cretaceous biotite granites. Mineralogic and fluid inclusion studies were undertaken to illuminate the origin of the ore deposits. Data gathered from occurrences of ore deposits and mineral paragenesis reveals that there were two major mineralization stage. The first stage is sulfides-quartz stage. The constituents of ore minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite with minor amount of galena, native Au, Ag, pyrite. The second stage is gangue mineral stage. Gangue minerals are quartz, fluorite and calcite. Homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions in quartz of the first and the second stage ranges from $212^{\circ}C$ to $336^{\circ}C$ and from $154^{\circ}C$ to $355^{\circ}C$ respectively. Homogenization temperature in fluorite and calcite of the second stage ranges from $127^{\circ}C$ to $252^{\circ}C$ and from $129^{\circ}C$ to $158^{\circ}C$ but these data require positive pressure corrections. Fluid inclusions in quartz of the Bongmyeong mine, Jangja the first mine and the second mine show range of homogenization temperature from $178^{\circ}C$ to $330^{\circ}C$, from $185^{\circ}C$ to $354^{\circ}C$ and from $206^{\circ}C$ to 336 respectively. The comparison of the fluid inclusion data, mineralogical component and vein attitude of the three mines with that of Chungil mine indicates that the origin of the deposits above mentioned is elucidated to be formed under similar environment. The compositions of the sphalerite in the first stage range from 16.05 mol.% FeS to 20.36 mol.% FeS.
The Dongbo tungsten-molybdenum deposits are fissure-filling veins emplaced in granites of late Cretaceous age. Integrated field, mineralogic and fluid inclusion studies were undertaken to illuminate the characters and origin of the ore deposits. Mineral paragenesis is complicated by repeated fracturing, but four distinct depositional stages can be recognized; (I) tungsten-molybdenum minerals-quartz-chlorite stage, (II) iron-oxide and sulfides-quartz stage, (III) iron -oxide-base metal sulfides-sulfosalts-quartz-carbonates stage, (IV) barren rhodochrosite-zeolite stage. Fluid inclusion studies were carried out for stage I quartz and stage III quartz, sphalerite and calcite. Fluid inclusion studies reveals highly systematic trends of homogenization temperature and salinity throughout the mineralization. Ore fluids during stage I were complex, NaCl rich brine and salinity reached values as high as 34.4 weight percent equivalent NaCl, but the later ore fluids were more dilute and reached to 9.7 weight percent equivalent NaCl during stage III. Intermittent boiling of ore fluid during stage I is indicated by the fluid inclusions in stage I quartz. Depositional temperatures and pressures during stage I range from $520^{\circ}C$ to $265^{\circ}C$and from 600 to 400 bars. Homogenization temperatures of the stage III quartz, sphalerite and calcite range from $305^{\circ}C$ to $190^{\circ}C$. Fluid inclusion data from the Dongbo mine are nearly similar to those from other hydrothermal tungsten deposits in the Kyeongsang basin. Depositional temperature and salinity of ore fluids during precipitation of tungsten-molybdenum minerals in Dongbo mine were much higher, but $CO_2$ contents were much lower than those from hydrothermal tungsten-molybdenum deposits of late Cretaceous plutonic association in central parts of Korean peninsula.
The gravity measurement has been conducted at 69 points with an interval of about 1km along the national road between Masan and Busan through Kimhae to study on the subsurface geology and structure of Kyongsang basin. The Bouguer gravity anomalies were obtained from the observed gravity values, and interpreted by means of the Fourier-series method and Talwani method for 2-dimensional body. The depth of Conrad discontinuity is about 14.8km at the west end of survey line, and increases smoothly to about 13.6km at the east end. But it is uplifted by about 500m between Yangsan and Dongnae faults. The depth of the basement of Kyongsang basin is about 4.8km at the west end. It decreases gradually passing Masan, and reaches the maximum depth of 5.6km at the 15km east of Masan. Hereafter, it starts to increase to 4.3km at the east end. It is also uplifted by about 500m between Yangsan and Dongnae faults. The Bulgugsa granites which cause two low Bouguer gravity anomaly zones are distributed in the vicinity of Masan at depth of about 3.5km and Kimhae area at depth of about 5.3km. Diorite, granodiorite, aplite, and felsite are distributed with various depth of about 1~1.7km, and Jusasan andesitic rocks, except porphyritic one located at the west of Kimhae, are distributed with depth of about 1km. Three fracture zones associated with faults are located at the places where v-shaped Bouguer gravity anomalies are appeared.
