A kinematically constrained microplane constitutive model is developed for intact granite. The model is verified by fitting the experimented data of Westerly granite and Bonnet granite. Using the model with the standard finite element method, the behavior of the intact granite subjected blasting impact is studied. What is studied includes the attenuation of the blasting waves, the size of the fractured zone and the effect of the charge condition to avoid overbreak of the rock mass. The model developed captures the energy loss due to the inelastic behavior and the microcracking of granite during blasting very well. The attenuation of the blasting waves calculated based on the model is much more than that based on the linear-elastic constitutive law. The size of damaged (or fractured) zone is calculated directly from the principal strain as blasting impact is spreading, not like in the case with the linear elasticity model.

Four road tunnels, which consists of biotite gneiss and granite gneiss and shows a similar geological conditions, were selected in this study. Laboratory and field tests, the rock mass rating for the four tunnels were conducted. A regression analysis was performed to find out the correlations of test results. It was proposed an equation of reduction factor which can assess the deformation modulus for biotite gneiss and granite gneiss. It was also found that there was a close correlation between Q and RQD in four tunnels according to the analysis between RMR and Q, RMR and RQD, Q and RQD and laboratory and field tests.

The fundamental characteristics of groundwater colloids, such as composition, concentration, size, and stability, were analyzed using granitic groundwater samples taken from the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) site by such analytical methods as inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, field emission-transmission electron microscopy, a liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector, and dynamic light scattering technique. The results show that the KURT groundwater colloids are mainly composed of clay minerals, calcite, metal (Fe) oxide, and organic matter. The size and concentration of the groundwater colloids were 10-250 nm and 33-64 ㎍·L-1, respectively. These values are similar to those from other studies performed in granitic groundwater. The groundwater colloids were found to be moderately stable under the groundwater conditions of the KURT site. Consequently, the groundwater colloids in the fractured granite system of the KURT site can form stable radiocolloids and increase the mobility of radionuclides if they associate with radionuclides released from a radioactive waste repository. The results provide basic data for evaluating the effects of groundwater colloids on radionuclide migration in fractured granite rock, which is necessary for the safety assessment of a high-level radioactive waste repository.
Damage characteristics of granite, marble and sandstone whose properties were different were investigated by uniaxial compression test and cyclic loading-unloading test. Strength, elastic constants and damage threshold stresses were measured by uniaxial compression test and were compared with those measured by cyclic loading-unloading test. Average rock strengths measured by cyclic loading-unloading test were either lower than or similar with those measured by uniaxial compression test. Rocks with high strength and low porosity were more sensitive to fatigue than that with low strength and high porosity. Although permanent strains caused by cyclic loading-unloading were different according to rock types, they could be good indicators representing damage characteristics of rock. Damage threshold stress of granite and marble might be measured from stress-permanent strain curves. Acoustic emissions were measured during both tests and felicity ratios which represented damage characteristics of rocks were calculated. Felicity ratio of sandstone which was weak in strength and highly porous could not be calculated because of very few measurements of acoustic emissions. On the other hand, damage threshold could be predicted from felicity ratios of granite and marble which were brittle and low in porosity. The deformation behaviors and damage characteristics of rock mass could be investigated if additional tests for various rock types were performed.
When tunnels or underground structures are constructed in anisotropic rock mass, designers and constructors have to consider the anisotropic characteristics in rock mass because their physical and mechanical properties are depended on the anisotropic angles(${\beta}$). In this study, therefore, we have first investigated the mechanical behavior of the gneiss specimen from lab. tests, and then have analysed the behavior of specimens for to the transversely isotropic model in elastic medium using the FLAC program. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1) In the result of the variation tests, in general, the properties of strength were depended on the angle of inclination in spite of the hard rock. And except for the shear strength test, the lowest and peak stress were appeared at 60$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$respectively. 2) The results of specimen modeling analysis using FDM well indicated the mechanical behaviors of the specimen of transversely isotropic model.
This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and mechanical anisotropy of granite distributed in the Nam-weon on the subject of weathered rock mass sea water surroundings. Artificial weathering test is defined as a test, which controls the weathering rate and agents by controlling the weathering rate and agents by artificial environmental of salt water. Increased weathering degree is large indicated by weathering salt water, such as apparent specific gravity, absorption, porosity, uniaxial compression strength, P-wave velocity, slake durability, shore hardness, indirect tensile strength(brazilian test) and cohesion were measured. As the Weathering salt water proceeds, cracks develope increasingly. A number the cracks affect the rock deformation. Therefore, stress-strain curve of weathered salt water rock in one confined state are quite differ from weathered fresh water rock those. A reason of their deformation type is the formation of micro-cracks and potential porosity caused by artificial weathering test.
Using a field spectrometer having a spectral range of 0.4$\mu\textrm{m}$~2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ with a spectral resolution of 1nm, the researchers measured the reflectance of granite, andesitic rocks, sedimentary rocks, and pyrophyllite ore in the Ungsang area, Kyungsang Basin, South Korea. Spectral characteristics of the geological media were investigated from the analysis. The in-situ measured sites were selected in well exposed rock outcrops. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, rocks were sampled and remeasured under natural solar condition. The reflectance of field data was measurd at three sistes for granite, six sites for andesitic rock three sites for sedimentary rocks, and two sites for pyrophyllite ore. The vibrational absorption bands for pyrophyllite are detected in the spectral range of 2.0$\mu\textrm{m}$~2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$. The absorption band for granites in study area is not distinctive. The reflectance measured under normal field conditions showed strong absorption at wavelengths of 1.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ due to the effect of moisture in the atmosphere. After the bands of 1.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ were removed, Hull Quotient method was applied to characterize absorption bands. The reflectances of field data were calculated to estimate the band ratio corresponding to the Landsat TM and EOS Terra ASTER. The researchers suggest here that the TM band2, band3, band4, and band7 or ASTER band2, band3, band4, and band9 are the best combination for discriminating outcrops. The researchers tested and demonstrated using a Landsat TM image in the study area. For geologic applications, decorrelation stretch is also an effective tool to enhance the exposed rock mass in images.
In this study, the load transfer mechanism of tendon-grout interface of rock anchors has been examined through a series of static pull-out tests conducted on the model rock anchors constructed in the natural and artificial rock masses of granite and concrete, respectively. Several rock masses with horizontal discontinuities have been prepared to study the effects of weak planes on the shear stress distribution in tendon-grout interface. As a result, for the rock anchors constructed in the rock mass without discontinuities, stress concentration occurs on the upper part of the tendon-grout interface. On the contrary, as the frequency or the number of discontinuities increases, the shear stress distribution along the depth tends to be uniform. Also, an experimental equation about shear stress distribution between tendon-grout interface can be made by the regression of test results. The shear stresses computed from the experimental results between the rock surface and the depth of 2~3 times the tendon diameter are smaller than those from theory. Below the depth, the reverse can be observed.

The uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass is known as the major factor in the assessment of drillability and the optimum excavation design in full-face tunnel excavation by TBM. Referring to worldwide cases, TBM has been applied mostly to the rock mass within the strength range of 80~250 MPa. Recently, a water way tunnel has been constructed as a part of Milyang dam project by TBM within the rock masses where the rock type is mainly granite with some granophyre, hornfels and andesite. Their uniaxial compressive strengths in extended area are estimated higher than 260 MPa. In this paper, the relation between the penetration rate and the rock mass properties is analyzed and TBM application to the very hard rocks is discussed. As a result that three suggestions to predict the TBM net penetration rate are analyzed, NTH method seems a better approach than other methods in the extremely hard rocks. NTH prediction matches with the results of actual values with the variations of 2~20%. Hardness measurement by Schmidt hammer and RMR estimation are carried out along the L = 5.3 km entire TBM tunnel alignment. The net penetration rate measured monthly is shown to be reciprocally proportional to Schmidt rebound hardness and RMR where coefficients of correlation, $R^2$are 0.705 and 0.777 respectively. As a result, they are good quantitative indices for the prediction of TBM net penetration rate in the extremely hard rocks. Magnitude of in-situ stress has a certain effect on TBM performance, and it is required to measure the in-situ stresses in TBM excavation design.

With increasing demand for LNG as energy resources and need for $CO_2$ sequestration as greenhouse gas, more storage facilities are required in Korea. Due to the recent acute safety concerns and land shortage, storage facilities tend to be located underground. In design and construction of underground storage for low and high temperature materials, besides their mechanical characteristics, the thermal characteristics of rock under temperature variation should be understood. In this study, laboratory experiments for the measurement of the thermal expansion coefficient of rock were performed using strain gauge in consideration of the particle size of mineral and experiment temperature range. Experiment results show that thermal expansion coefficient decreased as the temperature decreases. In addition, linear thermal expansion coefficient was developed for typical Korean rocks such as granite. The results of this study can be utilized for the evaluation of thermal propagation in rock mass and the thermo-mechanical stability of underground facilities.
