The phase stability of tetragonal phase in Y-TZP was investigated in terms of the distribution of grain sizes and heat-treating atmosphere. Y-TZP with various grain sizes were prepared using duration time at $1600^{\circ}C$ as experimental parameter. Accumulated grain size distributions were built from the SEM micrographs and the amount of tetragonal phase were measured using XRD. Both results were compared to determine the critical grain size before and after heat-treatment in vacuum. The critical grain size drastically decreased compared with the small increase of average grain size due to the autocatalytic effect which critically affects the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation. After heat-treatment in reductive atmosphere critical grain size relatively increased due to the stabilization of tetragonal phase. The formation of oxygen vacancies during heat-treatment was ascribed to the increase of stability.

In the sintering of YIG, abnormal grain growth phenomena were observed. This abnormal grain growth is related to the sintering temperature in this experiment. In the sintering below 1450$^{\circ}C$, the sintered body showed narrow size distribution. However, in the sintering at 1450$^{\circ}C$, a few grains grew rapidly with respect to other grains, and bimodal size distribution was appeared. From the observation of the microstructure, liquid phase was not observed far from the abnormally grown large grains, but only near the large grains. This means that the abnormal grain growth was caused by the nonuniform distribution of liquid phase which promote the grains growth. Because the growth rate of grains near the liquid phase is much higher than that of the other grains, a few grains grow rapidly. This nonuniform distribution of liquid phase was thought to be due to the nonuniform mixing of the calcined powders. This abnormal grain growth was suppressed by enhancement of the compositional uniformity by multiple calcination.

Boundary element method was used to solve heat conduction problem for predicting temperature distribution in grain storage bin. Temperature of grain in storage is one of the three main abiotic factors, besides the intergranular gas composition and the grain moisture content, that determine the keeping quality and control measures used to protect grain from insects and damaging microflora. Collecting the temperature data at various points in the storage bins at different time of the day over a period of time is one way of finding the temperature distribution, this method requires a lot of time, cost and labour and less efficient. However data so collected serve useful purpose of being used to validate predicted temperature distribution using mathematical models. Mathematical models based on physical principles can potentially predict with accuracy the temperature distribution in a grain storage bin. Using the boundary element model the effect of bin wall material, ambient emperature, bin size etc. on temperature distribution can be studied. A knowledge of temperature distribution in stored grain not only helps in identifying active deterioration , but also gives an indication of potential for detection.

This study was conducted to obtain the most effective distribution of grain size and the optimum lime content for lime-soil stabilization. To achieve the aim, the change of consistency, the characteristics of compaction and unconfined compressive strength were tested by adding of 0, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 percent lime by weight for all soils adjusted by given ratios of sand to clay. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There was a tendency that the plasticity index of lime-soil mixture was decreased by increasing the amount of lime, whereas the liquid limit was varied irregularly and the plastic limit was increased. 2. With the addition of more lime, the optimum moisture content of lime-soil mixture was increased, and the maximum dry density was decreased. 3. The optimum lime content of lime-soil mixture was varied from soil to soil, and the less amount of small grain size, the less value of optimum lime content. 4. The optimum distribution of grain size for lime-soil mixture was in the soil, having the ratio of about 60 percent of cohesive clay and about 40 percent of sand by weight. 5. In the soil having fine grain size, the effect of curing appeared for long periods of time, whereas the increasing rate of unconfined compressive strength was great on the soil of coarse grain size in the earlier stage of curing period.
Abnormal grain growth in alumina was investigated during sinter-HIP process for better understanding of pressure effect on microstructural development. Abnormal grain growth of monolithic alumina was observed near surface region rather than interior region of specimen. Finite element analysis was used to estimate the pressure distribution developed in the specimen. Pressure distribution analysis was in good agreement with grain size distributjion in the specimen. The results of finite element analysis provided that abnormal grain growth monolithic alumina was resulted from the inhomogeneous pressure distribution in the specimen. MgO addition in alumina was effective for the suppression of abnormal grain growth in alumina under inhomogeneous pressure distribution during sinter-HIP process.
A study has been performed on the effect of TMT(thermomechanical treatment) on the mechanical properties of steel and aluminum alloys. Improvement of the mechanical properties on steel by HTMT is due to refinement of prior austenite grain size, martensite lath size and the distribution of fine carbide precipitates and on aluminum alloy by ITMT is due to grain size refinement, homogeneous distribution of small second phase particles and retardation of the recrystallization.

The microstructure evolution during a hot forging of Waspaloy was investigated using the recrystallization model and FEM simulation. In order to obtain an uniform microstructure, hot forging was carried out by two step. The change of grain size during hot forging has a deep connection with dynamic recrystallization behavior. Avrami-type constitutive equation for the dynamic recrystallization was implemented into an user subroutine of 2D FE simulator. The evolution of grain structure in the two-step forging of Waspaloy was simulated using the 2D FEM user-subroutine. The detailed variation of microstructures due to dynamic recrystallization could effectively be predicted at various locations in a forged pancake.
A combined stochastic diffusion and mean-field model is developed for a systematic study of the grain growth in a pure single-phase polycrystalline material. A corresponding Fokker-Planck continuity equation is formulated, and the interplay/competition of stochastic and curvature-driven mechanisms is investigated. Finite difference results show that the stochastic diffusion coefficient has a strong effect on the growth of small grains in the early stage in both two-dimensional columnar and three-dimensional grain systems, and the corresponding growth exponents are ~0.33 and ~0.25, respectively. With the increase in grain size, the deterministic curvature-driven mechanism becomes dominant and the growth exponent is close to 0.5. The transition ranges between these two mechanisms are about 2-26 and 2-15 nm with boundary energy of 0.01-1 J $m^{-2}$ in two- and three-dimensional systems, respectively. The grain size distribution of a three-dimensional system changes dramatically with increasing time, while it changes a little in a two-dimensional system. The grain size distribution from the combined model is consistent with experimental data available.

The growth process of solid grains in a liquid matrix is usually explained in tem1S of Ostwald ripening. The variation of growth (dissolution) rate as a function of grain size during Ostwald ripening predicted that the dissolution rate becomes very large as grain size decreases but the growth rate of a large grain is rather limited. Therefore. a rather uniform size distribution of grain size is maintained once after the quasi-equilibrium state is reached. Quite frequently, however, the exaggerated grain growth (EGG) is observed to occur: only a limited number of grains grow exceptionally. From the observation that the EGG occurs only for the faceted grains with apparently straight solid-liquid interfaces, the EGG is suggested to be the consequence of growth process controlled by 2-dimensional nucleation. In this study, the result by computer calculation on the grain growth process controlled by various mechanisms will be given.
A material model has been presented, at the continuum level, for the representation of superplastic deformation coupled with microstructural evolution. The model presented enables the effects of the spatial variation of distributions of grain size to be predicted at the process level. The model has been tested under conditions of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous stress and strain by carrying out detailed comparison of predicted distributions of grain size and their evolutions with experimentally obtained data. Experimental measurements have shown the extent of the spatial variation of the distribution of grain size that exists in the titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. It is shown that whilst not large, the variations in grain size distributions are sufficient to lead to the development of inhomogeneous deformation in test pieces, which ultimately result in localisation of strain and failure.
