  • Surface modification of montmorillonite (MMT) with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (3GTO) in mild methanol/water mixture has been investigated in detail. The influence of reaction conditions (including silane concentration in feed, reaction time and reaction temperature) on the grafting amount and yield of silane, and further on the grafting pattern of silanes was studied by thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET. Higher silane concentration, longer reaction time and higher reaction temperature are all benefit to higher grafting amount. When the grafting reaction was performed with 3 mmol/g silane concentration, at $90^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, the grafted amount and yield of silane reached 1.4443 mmol/g and 30%, respectively. Based on the XRD and BET data analysis, a speculation that the grafting pattern of silanes was concentration dependence was proposed.

  • Melt grafting of itaconic acid (IA) onto an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) with various organic peroxide initiators was performed. Finding the optimum mixing conditions and concentration of ingredients is critical for effective grafting and optimum properties of grafted materials. This study focused on the effects of mixing conditions (temperature and time), initiator type/concentration and monomer concentration on the grafting degree and efficiency, melt flow index, and gel content of EPDM-g-IA. The initiator, 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy)-hexane (T-101), appeared to meet for the best grafting degree (1.91%). The grafting degree increased markedly by increasing the amounts of monomer IA and initiator T-101. The grafting degree also increased by increasing mixing temperature and time. The optimum monomer and initiator concentrations and reaction temperature and time were found to be about 5wt%/0.05wt% and $160^{\circ}C$/15min, respectively. It was found that the physical properties of EPDM-g-IA were higher than those of the pristine EPDM.

  • Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was used to introduce epoxy groups on the surface of polypropylene (PP) plate, used as a substrate, through plasma-induced graft copolymerization. Emulsion polymerization was applied for graft copolymerization of GMA and was compared with conventional solution polymerization to confirm its effect. Plasma treatment conditions under one atmospheric pressure were fixed as follows; the RF power of 200 W, the treatment time of 30 sec, the Ar gas flow rate of 6 LPM, and the exposure time of treated PP samples in air of 5 min. For graft-copolymerization, GMA concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time was optimized to maximize the grafting degree of GMA. The maximum grafting degree of GMA was obtained at the condition of 12%-GMA concentration, $90^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature, and 5 hr-reaction time. Analysis results supported that the emulsion polymerization was more effective than the solution polymerization for grafting more GMAs on the surface of PP plate under the same reaction conditions.

  • The nutrient and irrigation management of scion and rootstock can alleviate stress on grafted transplants after grafting and promote the growth. This study investigated the effects of nutrient and irrigation management of scion and rootstock on the graft-take and growth of grafted pepper transplants. Before grafting, the scions were subjected to different water potential regimes in media by controlling the irrigation frequency and time. The scions were subirrigated 0, 1(two days before grafting), 1(one days before grafting) or 2 times for five days before grafting. The irrigation frequency and time influenced the water potential of media and the growth of scion and grafted transplants. At 13 days after grafting, fresh and dry weight of transplants which were irrigated once at two days before grafting were greater by 29 and 34% than those without irrigation during five days before grafting. This suggests that mild water stress on scion prior to grafting by controlling water management alleviate water stress on grafted transplants after grafting and improve the growth. Before grafting, the rootstocks were subjected to different nutrient regimes by controlling nutrient solution application. The rootstocks were supplied with nutrient solution 0, 1, 2, or 4 times. The nutrient application frequency and time influenced the electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of media. Accordingly, the growth and mineral contents of rootstock and grafted transplants were also affected. At 13 days after grafting, fresh and dry weight of transplants with four times of nutrient application increased by 30 and 20%, respectively, than those without nutrient solution supply during seven days before grafting. Therefore, it is recommended that nutrient solution be supplied more than four times during seven days before grafting for the production of high quality transplants.

  • Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder induced by a loss of melanocytes. In addition to replacement of pure melanocytes, cocultures of melanocytes with keratinocytes have been used to improve the repigmentation outcome in vitiligo treatment. We previously identified by in vitro studies, that adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) could be a potential substitute for keratinocytes in cocultures with melanocytes. In this study, the efficacy of pigmentation including durability of grafted melanocytes and short-term safety was examined in the nude mouse and Sprague-Dawley rat after grafting of primary cultured human melanocytes, with or without different ratios of primary cultured human ADSCs. Simultaneous grafting of melanocytes and ADSCs, which were separately cultured and mixed on grafting at the ratios of 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3, showed better efficacy than that of pure melanocytes. Grafting of melanocytes cocultured with ADSCs resulted in a similar outcome as the grafting of cell mixtures. Skin pigmentation by melanocytes : ADSCs at the ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 was better than at 1:3. No significant difference was observed between the 1-week and 2-week durations in coculturing. Time-course microscopic examination showed that the grafted melanocytes remained a little longer than 6-week post-grafting. No inflammatory cell infiltration was observed in the grafted skin and no melanocytes were detectable in other organs. Collectively, grafting of melanocytes and ADSCs was equally safe and more effective than grafting of melanocytes alone. Despite the absence of significant differences in efficacy between the group of 1:1 and that of 1:2 ratio, 1:2 ratio for 1-week coculturing may be better for clinical use from the cost-benefit viewpoint.

  • This study was carried out to find out the proper method of grafting of Magnolia grandiflora L. Magnolia kobus DC. was used as stocks and the modified veneer grafting method in which a flap was attached to the cut surface of scion was adopted. And also the environment of the grafting beds was controlled for giving optimum humidity (90-100%) and temperature ($20-25^{\circ}C$). The results are summarized as follows: 1. Two year-old seedlings of M. kobus were best as stocks for grafting of M. gantiflora. 2. The modified veneer grafting which brought the successful result of 43 to 89.5 percent found to be very efficient method. 3. The environmental control made of vinyl tunnel and screen (lath) was very effective to attain to the excellent result of 89 percent. 4. For scions, one to two year-old branches with well developed winter buds collected just before the time of grafting gave the best results. 5. The optimum season for grafting in Kwangju districts was 15 to 20, April.

  • Cerium (Ⅳ) ion-initiated graft copolymerizations of acrylamide and of acrylonitirile to silk fibroins were investigated. When acrylamide was used, the change in ceric ammonium nitrate concentration exhibited a maximum in degree of grafting at 0.01 M. Also observed was that the change in acetic acid content in reaction media gave a maximum in degree of grafting at 7% acetic acid in water. Degree of grafting was increased generally with increase in acrylamide concentration reaction time and reaction temperature. When acrylonitrile monomer was used for grafting, different results were obtained. Addition of nitric acid was more effective in enhancing the degree of grafting than the addition of acetic acid.Generally the grafting of acrylonitrile to silk fibroins was less efficient than the grafting of acrylamide. The portion of grafted silk fibroins insoluble in Lowe's reagent exhibited the IR absorption bands characteristics to both vinyl polymers and silk fibroins, indicating the grafting of vinyl monomers to silk fibroins. To examine the molecular weight of graft vinyl polymer, a sample of grafted silk was hydrolyzed by 10% sodium hydroxide. Viscosity measurements indicated that the molecular weight of the graft polymer was in the range of 105.

  • The graft polymerization of styrene to polyvinyl alcohol using a photosensitizer(benzophenone) and ultraviolet light was studied. Styrene was grafted onto polyvinyl alcohol up to when polyvinyl alcohol was pre-immersed in water and irradiated by ultraviolet light for 24 hours styrene solution of benzophenone(0.01 molarity). The highest percentage of graft obtained in the grafting which was proceeded in the presence of water added immediately before irradiation was 29%. The grafting was proportional to irradiation time within a certain limit of time, i.e., 24 hours, and presumably was initiated at the surface. After a certain degree of grafting a definite maximum was reached. Graft polymer prepared in this experiment showed high resistance to various solvents.

  • Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were grafted with acrylic acid by a preirradiation method by using electron beam accelerator. The effect of irradiation dose, storage time, concentration of acrylic acid, reaction temperature, reaction time and Mohr's salt concentration on the degree of grafting were investigated in detail. The grafted Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were characterized using IR spectroscopy and SEM. The results showed that the degree of grafting increased with increasing absorbed dose and the Mohr's salt in the acrylic acid solution promoted grafting efficiency.

  • The purpose of this study is in development of effective filter-type polymer adsorbent for removal of pollutants from wastewater by UV irradiation graft polymerization. Photografting of acrylic acid (AA) on polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric using benzophenone (BP) as a photosensitizer was investigated. Inhibition of homopolymerization was achieved by adding various concentrations of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ and Mohr's salt. As AA concentration was increased, the degree of grafting was increased as to a specific value and then decreased, and the effect of BP concentration showed the same tendency. It was also found that the degree of grafting increased with reaction time and reaction temperature. Addition of the polyfunctional monomers and $H_2SO_4$ to the grafting system accelerated the photografting. The melting temperature, molecular weight and breaking stress and breaking strain were decreased with the increase in the degree of grafting.
