The effect of the grafting ratio on the mechanical property and adhesion property of the grafted EPDM modified with methacrylic acid (MA) was investigated. The storage modulus of MA-grafted EPDM was maintained higher than that of cross-linked EPDM vulcanizate by sulfur, but it was observed that the storage modulus was decreased at elevated temperature because of the weakened secondary bonding. When the functional group for hydrogen bonding was introduced in EPDM, it had excellent mechanical properties by the aggregate between grafted EPDM molecules and crystallinity of MA. The bonding strength between EPDM and other rubbers was very low because EPDM has nonpolar property and low molecular interaction to others. The bonding strength was increased as increasing grafting ratio and it was excellent enough to break the rubber during the peel test when the grafting ratio was more than 10%.

After the grafting of methacrylic acid (MA) to ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), a new peak at $1704cm^{-1}$ corresponding to the carboxylic acid group was observed in the infrared (IR) spectrum. This characteristic MA molecule peak grew larger as the MA contents were increased. After casting films were prepared from pure EPDM and MA-grafted EPDM, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements were made the pure EPDM exhibited a melting point of approximately $45^{\circ}C$ while that of the MA-grafted EPDM was $135{\sim}140^{\circ}C$. As the graft ratio of MA increased, the absorbed heat capacity increased at temperatures near $135{\sim}140^{\circ}C$, indicating that an increased amount of MA reacted. Furthermore, owing to the addition of crystalline MA, it is expected that strength of the elastomer will improve as the graft ratio increases, as a result of the increased number of hard segments.
Crosslink characteristics of maleic anhydride-grafted EPDM (MAH-g-EPDM)/zinc oxide composite were investigated by weight losses after dichloroacetic acid (DCA)/toluene cosolvent extraction at different temperatures and by measurement of crosslink densities. The chemical changes were analyzed using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The weight losses by extraction at high temperature ($90^{\circ}C$) were remarkably greater than those at room temperature and those by DCA/toluene cosolvent extraction were greater than those by toluene one by more than 5 times. The crosslink densities were measured after the solvent extraction, and the second crosslink densities were higher than the first ones. The first crosslink density was lower when the extraction temperature was high, and it was much lower for the toluene extraction than for the DCA/toluene cosolvent extraction. The second crosslink density of the sample extracted with DCA/toluene cosolvent was greater than that extracted with toluene. The extracted components were depending on the extraction solvents and temperatures, for example; only strong crosslinked networks were remained when extracting with DCA/toluene cosolvent at high temperature, while only uncrosslinked polymer chains were extracted when extracting with toluene at room temperature. Therefore, crosslink characteristics of the MAH-g-EPDM/zinc oxide composite can be analyzed by comparison of the extracted components according to the extraction solvents and temperatures and by measurement of successive crosslink densities.
Maleated ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (MEPDM) was prepared from solution polymerization of EPDM and maleic anhydride. MEPDM-grafted-poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) copolymer (MEPDM-g-PDMS) was prepared from copolymerization of MEPDM with $\alpha$,$\omega$-hydroxyl group terminated PDMS. The MEPDM-g-PDMS was compounded with HDPE and 4-ethoxybenzoic acid modified MWCNT at $180^{\circ}C$ and positive temperature coefficient (PCT) behavior of the MWCNT composite was investigated. Surface modification of MWCNT enabled it to be more uniformly dispersed in polymer matrix and decreased aggregation of particles. Electrical resistivity of the composite was abruptly increased at melting temperature and PTC intensity of 2.3 was obtained at 15% loading of surface modified CNT.
The ethylene-propylene rubber (EPDM) scrap generated from automobile weatherstrip manufacturing process was used to make a thermoplastic elastomer through blending with polypropylene. The surface activated EPDM powder was obtained by the high temperature and shear pulverizer. The addition of surfactant resulted in more surface activated EPDM powder and the optimum loading amounts of surfactant was 1.5 phr. Maleic anhydride was grafted onto polypropylene by reactive blending to give functionalized polypropylene. The wetting property between EPDM scrap and polypropylene was improved by the addition of poly (ethylene-co-acrylic acid) as a compatibilizing agent. Poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) decreased the surface tension of polypropylene and thus would contribute to the wettability with EPDM powder.

In this study, p-acryloyloxybenzoic acid(ABA) was synthesized with p-hydroxybenzoic acid(HBA) and acryloyl chloride(AC). The synthesized ABA monomer was grafted onto ethylene-propylene-diene rubber(EPDM) in toluene using benzoyl peroxide(BPO) as an initiator. The structures of ABA and EPDM-g-ABA were characterized by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, and $^{13}C$-NMR spectrometer. The graft ratio of EPDM-g-ABA increased with increasing the concentration of the initiator and the monomer. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and compression set of the EPDM-g-ABA were improved with increasing the graft ratio. The $T_g$ and initial decomposition temperature were also increased with increasing the graft ratio.

Influence of amino acidic chemical on properties of maleic anhydride-grafted ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer/zinc oxide (EPDM-g-MAH/ZnO) composites was investigated. 4-Aminosalicylic acid (ASA), 4-amino-2-methoxybenzoic acid (AMBA), 12-aminolauric acid (ALA), and glutamine (Gln) were employed as the amino acidic chemicals. Though small quantity (0.5 phr) of the amino acidic chemical was added to the EPDM-g-MAH/ZnO composite, the properties were notably changed. By adding the amino acidic chemical, the percent crystallinity and apparent crosslink density were reduced. Order of the percent crystallinity was related to that of the $pK_a$ values of amino acidic chemicals. By adding the amino acidic chemical, the basic tensile properties were on the whole improved. The experimental results were explained by the $pK_a$ values of amino acidic chemicals, change of zinc ionomer formation, and interactions between the additive and EPDM-g-MAH chain.
Swelling behaviors of raw (Specimen-R) and compressed (Specimen-C) samples of maleic anhydride-grafted EPDM (MAH-g-EPDM) depending on the treatment with dichloroacetic acid were investigated. Structural characteristics of the samples were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). When the samples were not treated with dichloroacetic acid, the swelling ratio of Specimen-R was greater than that of Specimen-C by about twice and the swelling ratio change was negligible though the process of swelling and drying was repeated. When the samples were treated with dichloroacetic acid, the first swelling ratios were increased but the second ones were decreased. For the Specimen-C, the swelling ratio of the sample without the dichloroacetic acid treatment and the second swelling ratio of the sample treated with dichloroacetic acid were nearly the same. However, for the Specimen-R, the second swelling ratio of the sample treated with dichloroacetic acid was strikingly lower than that of the sample without the dichloroacetic acid treatment. The swelling ratio change according to the dichloroacetic acid treatment was explained by dissociation of the existing crosslinks and formation of new crosslinks.
The effect on the hydrolysis resistance properties by the addition of maleic anhydride grafted EMDM (MA-g-EPDM) and PP (MA-g-PP) to a PA66/GF composite was investigated with respect to the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphology. The degree of hydrolysis of the PA66/GF composite was measured using py-GC/MS analysis. When compared to the PA66/GFcomposite in MEG/water solution, the composites where MA-g-EPDM and MA-g-PP were added to PA66/GF showed a higher degree of hydrolysis resistance, impact strength, and thermal properties, whereas their tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus decreased. As immersion time in the solution increases, the rate of tensile strength drop of the MA-g-PP added composite appeared lower than that of the PA66/MA-g-EPDM/GF and PA66/GF composites. The py-GC/MS analysis confirmed the formation of PA66 hydrolysis reaction by products such as carboxylic acid and alkylamine with increasing immersion time.
Herein, three polymer compounds were manufactured using three polymer combination methods, ethylene-vinyl acetate/ethylene-propylene-diene-copolymer (EPDM), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/polyethylene-A (PE-A; density: 0.870), and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/polyethylene-B (PE-B; density: 0.885), for making cable sheath for use in the shipping industry. In this study, EVA, EPDM, PE-A, and PE-B were used as matrix polymers, and EVA-grafted maleic anhydride was used as a coupling agent for compounding with various compounds such as a fire retardant, cross-linking agent, filler, and other additives, besides the plasticizer. ${\Delta}T$, Mooney viscosity, and tensile strength increased in order of EPDM < PE-A < PE-B, the probable reason is due to the different crosslinking effect. The three compounds showed similar results for fire resistance and aging resistance after compounding process, but they showed excellent cold resistance owing to the non-polarity of the polymers and sufficient plasticizer content.
