This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a simply supported viscoelastic plate made of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite under dynamic loading. Carbon nanotubes are distributed in 5 different shapes: U, V, A, O and X, depending on the shape they form through the thickness of the plate. The displacement fields are derived in the Laplace domain using a higher-order shear deformation theory. Equations of motion are obtained through the application of the energy method and Hamilton's principle. The resulting equations of motion are solved using Navier's method. Transforming the Laplace domain displacements into the time domain involves Durbin's modified inverse Laplace transform. To validate the accuracy of the developed algorithm, a free vibration analysis is conducted for simply supported plate made of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite and compared against existing literature. Subsequently, a parametric forced vibration analysis considers the influence of various parameters: volume fractions of carbon nanotubes, their distributions, and ratios of instantaneous value to retardation time in the relaxation function, using a linear standard viscoelastic model. In the forced vibration analysis, the dynamic distributed load applied to functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite viscoelastic plate is obtained in terms of double trigonometric series. The study culminates in an examination of maximum displacement, exploring the effects of different carbon nanotube distributions, volume fractions, and ratios of instantaneous value to retardation times in the relaxation function on the amplitudes of maximum displacements.
A solution is given for the elastodynamic problem of a crack perpendicular to the graded interfacial zone in bonded materials under the action of anti plane shear impact. The interfacial zone is modeled as a nonhomogeneous interlayer with the power-law variations of its shear modulus and mass density between the two dissimilar, homogeneous half-planes. Laplace and Fourier integral transforms are employed to reduce the transient problem to the solution of a Cauchy-type singular integral equation in the Laplace transform domain. Via the numerical inversion of the Laplace transforms, the values of the dynamic stress intensity factors are obtained as a function of time. As a result, the influences of material and geometric parameters of the bonded media on the overshoot characteristics of the dynamic stress intensities are discussed. A comparison is also made with the corresponding elastostatic solutions, addressing the inertia effect on the dynamic load transfer to the crack tips for various combinations of the physical properties.

Graded layers in which two different constituent particles are mixed are inserted into functionally graded material such that the volume fractions of constituent particles vary continuously and functionally over the entire material domain. The material properties of this dual-phase graded region, which is essential for the numerical analysis of the thermo-mechanical behavior of FGM, have been predicted by traditional homogenization methods. But, these methods are limited to predict the global equivalent material properties of FGMs because the detailed geometry information such as the particel shape and the dispersion structure is not considered. In this context, this study intends to investigate the characteristics of these homogenization methods through the finite element analysis utilizing the discrete micromechanics models of the graded layer, for various volume fractions and external loading conditions.

In this study, the dynamic behavior of functionally graded layered deep beams with viscoelastic core is investigated including the porosity effect. The material properties of functionally graded layers are assumed to vary continuously through thickness direction according to the power-law function. To investigate porosity effect in functionally graded layers, three different distribution models are considered. The viscoelastically cored deep beam is exposed to harmonic sinusoidal load. The composite beam is modeled based on plane stress assumption. The dynamic equations of motion of the composite beam are derived based on the Hamilton principle. Within the framework of the finite element method (FEM), 2D twelve -node plane element is exploited to discretize the space domain. The discretized finite element model is solved using the Newmark average acceleration technique. The validity of the developed procedure is demonstrated by comparing the obtained results and good agreement is detected. Parametric studies are conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the developed methodology to study and analyze the dynamic response of viscoelastically cored porous functionally graded deep beams. Effects of viscoelastic parameter, porosity parameter, graduation index on the dynamic behavior of porous functionally graded deep beams with viscoelastic core are investigated and discussed. Material damping and porosity have a significant effect on the forced vibration response under harmonic excitation force. Increasing the material viscosity parameters results in decreasing the vibrational amplitudes and increasing the vibration time period due to increasing damping effect. Obtained results are supportive for the design and manufacturing of such type of composite beam structures.
An investigation is made in the present work on the post-buckling and geometrically nonlinear behaviors of moderately thick perfect and imperfect rectangular plates made-up of functionally graded materials. Spectral collocation approach based on Legendre basis functions is developed to analyze the functionally graded plates while they are subjected to end-shortening strain. The material properties in this study are varied through the thickness according to the simple power law distribution. The fundamental equations for moderately thick rectangular plates are derived using first order shear deformation plate theory and taking into account both geometric nonlinearity and initial geometric imperfections. In the current study, the domain of interest is discretized with Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto nodes. The equilibrium equations will be obtained by discretizing the Von-Karman's equilibrium equations and also boundary conditions with finite Legendre basis functions that are substituted into the displacement fields. Due to effect of geometric nonlinearity, the final set of equilibrium equations is nonlinear and therefore the quadratic extrapolation technique is used to solve them. Since the number of equations in this approach will always be more than the number of unknown coefficients, the least squares technique will be used. Finally, the effects of boundary conditions, initial geometric imperfection and material properties are investigated and discussed to demonstrate the validity and capability of proposed method.
The bed evolution of the stretch of the River Rhine between km-812.5 and km-821.5 is characterised by general bed degradation as a result of the river training works and dredging activities of the last two centuries. The degradation of the river bed affects the water levels, and so the navigation conditions. To combat the erosion of the river bed with the aim to keep up the shipping traffic and to avoid the ecological system damages due to water level reductions, sand-gravel-mixtures were added to the river (so called artificial grain feeding activities). This paper presents the results of an application of a graded sediment transport model in order to study morpholodynamical characteristics due to artificial grain feeding activities in the river stretch. The finite element code TELEMAC2D was used for flow calculation by solving the 2D shallow water equation on non-structured grids. The sediment transport module SISYPHE has been developed for graded sediment transport using a multiple layer model. The needs to apply such graded sediment transport approaches to study morphological processes in the domain are discussed. The calculations have been carried out for the case of middle water flow and different size-fraction distributions. The results show that the grain feeding process could be well simulated by the model.
Recently, promising structural technologies like multi-function, ultra-load bearing capacity and tailored structures have been put up for discussions. Finite Element (FE) modelling is probably the best-known option capable of treating these superior properties and multi-domain behavior structures. However, advanced materials such as Functionally Graded Material (FGM) and nanocomposites suffer from problems resulting from variable material properties, reinforcement aggregation and mesh generation. Motivated by these factors, this research proposes a unified shape function for FGM, nanocomposites, graded nanocomposites, in addition to traditional isotropic and orthotropic structural materials. It depends not only on element length but also on the beam's material properties and geometric characteristics. The systematic mathematical theory and FE formulations are based on the Timoshenko beam theory for beam structure. Furthermore, the introduced element achieves C1 degree of continuity. The model is proved to be convergent and free-off shear locking. Moreover, numerical results for static and free vibration analysis support the model accuracy and capabilities by validation with different references. The proposed technique overcomes the issue of continuous properties modelling of these promising materials without discarding older ones. Therefore, introduced benchmark improvements on the FE old concept could be extended to help the development of new software features to confront the rapid progress of structural materials.

In this paper, a scheme to evaluate the response variability for functionally graded material (FGM) beam with varying sectional area is presented. The randomness is assumed to appear in a spatial domain along the beam axis in the elastic modulus. The functionally graded material categorized as composite materials, however without the drawbacks of delamination and occurrence of cracks due to abrupt change in material properties between layers in the conventional composite materials. The functionally graded material is produced by the gradual solidification through thickness direction, which endows continuous variation of material properties, which makes this material performs in a smooth way. However, due to difficulties in tailoring the gradients, to have uncertainty in material properties is unavoidable. The elastic modulus at the center section is assumed to be random in the spatial domain along the beam axis. Introducing random variables, defined in terms of stochastic integration, the first and second moments of responses are evaluated. The proposed scheme is verified by using the Monte Carlo simulation based on the random samples generated employing the spectral representation scheme. The response variability as a function of correlation distance, the effects of material and geometrical parameters on the response variability are investigated in detail. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is also addressed by comparing the analysis time of the proposed scheme and MCS.

The purpose of this paper is to present the analysis of propagating and evanescent waves in functionally graded (FG) nanoplates with the consideration of nonlocal effect. The analytical integration nonlocal stress expansion Legendre polynomial method is proposed to obtain complete dispersion curves in the complex domain. Unlike the traditional Legendre polynomial method that expanded the displacement, the presented polynomial method avoids employing the relationship between local stress and nonlocal stress to construct boundary conditions. In addition, the analytical expressions of numerical integrations are presented to improve the computational efficiency. The nonlocal effect, inhomogeneity of medium and their interactions on wave propagation are studied. It is found that the nonlocal effect and inhomogeneity of medium reduce the frequency bandwidth of complex evanescent Lamb waves, and make complex evanescent Lamb waves have a higher phase velocity at low attenuation. The occurrence of intersections of propagating Lamb wave in the nonlocal homogeneous plate needs to satisfy a smaller Poisson's ratio condition than that in the classical elastic theory. In addition, the inhomogeneity of medium enhances the nonlocal effect. The conclusions obtained can be applied to the design and dynamic response evaluation of composite nanostructures.
This paper is first implemented with the bending behavior of three-dimensional functionally graded (3DFG) plates in the framework of level set-based topology optimization (LS-based TO). Besides, due to the suitable properties of the current design domain, the thin-plate spline (TPS) is recognized as a RBF to construct the LS function. The overall mechanical properties of the 3DFG plate are assessed using a power-law distribution scheme via Mori-Tanaka micromechanical material model. The bending response is obtained using the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The mixed interpolation of four elements of tensorial components (MITC4) is also implemented to overcome a well-known shear locking problem when the thickness becomes thinner. The Hamilton-Jacobi method is utilized in each iteration to enforce the necessary boundary conditions. The mathematical formulas are expressed in great detail for the LS-based TO using 3DFG materials. Several numerical examples are exhibited to verify the efficiency and reliability of the current methodology with the previously reported literature. Finally, the influences of FG materials in the optimized design are explained in detail to illustrate the behaviors of optimized structures.
