This paper uses the four-variable refined plate theory for the free vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates. The plate properties are assumed to be varied through the thickness following a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of material constituents. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The closed-form solutions of functionally graded plates are obtained using Navier solution. Numerical results of the refined plate theory are presented to show the effect of the material distribution, the aspect and side-to-thickness ratio on the fundamental frequencies. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the free vibration behavior of functionally graded plates.
Functionally graded materials(FGMs) involve dual-phase graded layers in which two different constituents are mixed continuously and functionally according to a given volume fraction. For the analysis of their thermo-mechanical response, conventional homogenized methods have been widely employed in order to estimate equivalent material properties of the graded layer. However, such overall estimations are insufficient to accurately predict the local behavior. In this paper, we compare the thermo-elastic behaviors predicted by several overall material-property estimation techniques with those obtained by discrete analysis models utilizing the finite element method, for various volume fractions and loading conditions.

In the recent years, functionally graded materials(FGM) have gained considerable attention in the high temperature environment applications. In the present work, study of the deflection and vibration of a functionally graded rectangular plate made of Ti-6Al-4V and Al$_2$O$_3$ is presented. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction of the plate according to volume fraction power law distribution Effects of volume fractions(power law exponent) on the deflection and natural frequency of FGM plate is studied. Also effects of temperature is studied. Wavier Solution is used to analyzed the FGM plate.
Electron beam was applied on the low carbon steel in order to fabricate Metal/Metal GBM(Graded Boundary Material). Ni sheet was placed on the steel substrate. The electron beam was irradiated on the surface and produced a homogeous alloyed layer. Sequential repetition of electron beam treatments for 4 times resulted in 8mm thick graded layer. To determine each layers property, optical microscopy, XRD, microhardness tester and EDS were used. The residual stress was measured by the low angle x-ray diffraction method. The graded boundary layer was stepwise profile, but Ni content incresed up to 80 wt% and Fe content decreased 20 wt% near surface. Each layers microstructure and hardness varied by different Fe/Ni composition. The compressive residual stress was induced by martensite transformation in the 1st and End layers and the shrinkage cracks were formed in graded layer by rapid cooling.
The present paper deals with the free vibration analysis of the functionally graded solid and annular circular plates with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers at top and bottom subjected to an electric field. Classical plate theory (CPT) is used for description of the all deformation components based on a symmetric distribution. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness direction of the plate. The properties of plate core can vary from metal at bottom to ceramic at top. The effect of non homogeneous index of functionally graded and functionally graded piezoelectric sections can be considered on the results of the system. $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ modes of natural frequencies of the system have been evaluated for both solid and annular circular plates, individually.
The radial vibration behaviors of a circular cylindrical composite piezoelectric transducer (CPT) are investigated. The CPT is composed of a piezoelectric ring polarized in the radial direction and an elastic ring graded in power-law variation form along the radial direction. The governing equations for plane stress state problem under the harmonic excitation are derived and the exact solutions for both piezoelectric and functionally graded elastic rings are obtained. The characteristic equations for resonant and anti-resonant frequencies are established. The presented methodology is fit to carry out the parametric investigation for composite piezoelectric transducers (CPTs) with arbitrary thickness in radial direction. With the aid of numerical analysis, the relationship between the radial vibration behaviors of the cylindrical CPT and the material inhomogeneity index of the functionally graded elastic ring as well as the geometric parameters of the CPTs are illustrated and some important features are reported.

Preparation of graded materials displaying gradients of desired properties is one of the important issues and less-developed areas in materials chemistry. For the first time we demonstrate facile control of porosity and length in the pores of AAO template in lateral directions by controlled dipping method. To demonstrate the versatility of the proposed method, laterally graded silica nanotubes are also prepared by using the laterally graded AAO templates. The method demonstrated here will open numerous possibilities for obtaining a variety of graded materials with lateral gradients of catalytic, electrochemical, mechanical and optical properties on the nanoscale.
A simply supported hybrid plate consisting of top and bottom functionally graded elastic layers and an intermediate actuating or sensing homogeneous piezoelectric layer is investigated by an elasticity (piezoelasticity) method, which is based on state space formulations. The general spring layer model is adopted to consider the effect of bonding adhesives between the piezoelectric layer and the two functionally graded ones. The two functionally graded layers are inhomogeneous along the thickness direction, which are approached by laminate models. The effect of interlaminar bonding imperfections on the static bending and free vibration of the smart plate is discussed in the numerical examples.
A simple plane-strain solution is derived in this paper for the functionally graded multilayered isotropic elastic cylinder under static deformation. The solution is obtained using method of separation of variables and is expressed in terms of the summation of the Fourier series in the circumferential direction. While the solution for order n = 0 corresponds to the axisymmetric deformation, that for n = 2 includes the special deformation frequently utilized in the upper and lower bounds analysis. Numerical results for a three-phase cylinder with a middle functionally graded layer are presented for both axisymmetric (n = 0) and general (n = 2) deformations, under either the traction or displacement boundary conditions on the surface of the layered cylinder. The solution to the general deformation case (n = 2) is further utilized for the first time to find the upper and lower bounds of the effective shear modulus of the layered cylinder with a functionally graded middle layer. These results could be useful in the future study of cylindrical composites where FGMs and/or multilayers are involved.
In this paper, a hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory is developed for free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) sandwich beams. The theory account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. The material properties of the functionally graded sandwich beam are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic material. Based on the present refined beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Navier type solution method was used to obtain frequencies. Illustrative examples are given to show the effects of varying gradients and thickness to length ratios on free vibration of functionally graded sandwich beams.
