  • Recently, the number of passengers using urban railway has been increased by reasons of the reductions of car use due to high fuel prices and the enlightenment about the environment. Above all, the noise and the vibration coming from the friction between the wheel and the rail of trains in operation which is not only a factor that hinders riding comforts but causes civil complaints. Furthermore, the noise has become social issues from tightening the relevant regulations by the government since January 2010. Although ballasted tracks were constructed on urban railways at the time of opening, they have been changed into slab tracks because slab tracks require much less maintenance. However, in view of sound absorptivity of track, slab tracks have 10 times less capability than ballasted tracks(ballasted track : 0.5~0.6/slab tracks : 0.06) results more noise than that of ballasted tracks as much as 3dB(A) since slab tracks emit more reflection noise. Therefore, in order to minimize reflection noise on slab tracks, noise abatement system has been developed as a national R&D program to apply on-site test. It is assumed that the construction technology developed in this study can be used not only as basic data for the on-site test for the noise reduction in urban railway but as an efficient construction method.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the barriers of university and industry cooperation and to develop recommendations for the internal ecosystem of technology commercialization. The research method used is a survey of three categories of experts from 9 universities of Almaty (researchers, technology transfer managers, spin-off-owners). Despite the strong efforts of the government of Kazakhstan in building innovation infrastructure, there is a low level of innovation activity, less than 5% of university inventions are transferred into the industry. The results of the expert survey showed that the main barriers for cooperation between university and industry are: lack of resources to build university-industry links, lack of time due to high teaching load, poor qualification of technology transfer managers and lack of networking with industry. Based on the results of the expert survey, it is proposed to develop the ecosystem for the commercialization of university-based technologies, for which the following economic activities are important: human resources, financing, intellectual property management system, and intermediary infrastructure. The results of this study can be applied in developing the strategies and policies for universities, public research organizations, as well as for national R&D and higher education policies.

  • The modular construction means that more than 70% of the parts such as walls, windows, electrical wiring, facility piping, bathrooms, and kitchen appliances are pre-assembled at the factory and transported to the site. It is possible to shorten the construction period than general construction work and to secure high quality through modular mass production since the modular construction works in the field at the same time as the modular production. However, there are only four domestic modular manufacturers, and each company's modular components and construction methods are different, so it is necessary to standardize them. Therefore, this study investigated the construction process centering on the stacking method of modular housing construction work applied to D site in Cheonan-si, and proposed the key points of quality management by construction stage. As the project was conducted as a pilot project for government R&D projects, some differences may occur from general modular housing construction. However, the construction process and quality control focus of each unit box type modular house analyzed in this study can be used as basic data in the future of modular housing construction. In addition, the results of this study can be used to establish construction standards, such as the development of checklists and establishment of standard processes.

  • Due to the government's announcement of the 2025 policy mandating coding education, there is a growing need for effective coding learning methods in elementary education. However, there are few methods available that can easily help younger students understand coding. While text-based coding and visual block coding methods exist, they have limitations. To address these issues, we propose a block coding learning platform that combines virtual reality (VR) technology with gamification elements. The traditional two dimensional (2D) block coding methods have some limitations, so this platform aims to overcome these by providing an environment where learners can intuitively understand and experience coding in a three dimensional (3D) virtual space. The primary goal is to enhance immersive, learner-centered experiences and improve creative problem-solving skills and computational thinking. This study proposes an experimental approach to demonstrate the effectiveness of a learning platform that combines VR technology with block coding. Furthermore, we expect that the VR-based platform will significantly contribute to improving the quality of education and promoting self-directed learning among students.

  • Human milk (HM) glycoproteins play important roles protecting infants against various pathogens. Recently, freezing HM is reported to affect some glycoproteins and freeze-drying is suggested as an alternative method. However, the effects of freeze-drying on HM glycoproteins were not evaluated yet. Six fresh HM samples were collected from three healthy mothers at 15 and 60th days of lactation from each mother. Each sample was divided into frozen and freeze-dried subgroups yielding totally 12 samples, and the glycoproteomic analysis was performed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. The results were compared between samples of 15 and 60th days of lactation, and before and after the freeze-drying. Totally, 203 glycoproteins were detected. The glycoprotein levels were not different between two groups of 15/60th day of lactation and before/after freeze-drying groups (P > 0.050). In addition, significant correlation of glycoprotein levels was found between the different lactation stages (r = 0.897, P < 0.001) and the status of freeze-drying (r = 0.887, P < 0.001) in a partial correlation analysis. As no significant change of HM glycoproteins was not found after the freeze-drying, we hope that introducing freeze-drying to HM banks is supported by the present study. • In this research I investigate different firm characteristics between environment-friendly companies which are awarded by the Government and companies which violate environmental regulations. I set up three hypotheses in terms of managers' environmental attitude and firms' characteristic in technical, financial and structural aspects, considering environmental experts' opinions and findings of previous papers. Main research findings are as follows. First, both acquisition of the ISO 14001 certificate and ownership structure are used as proxy of top management attitude towards environmental decision-making. It is hypothesized that it is found that the certificates of ISO 14001 is a good proxy to represent top management environmental attitude and a firm with the certificate would have less likelihood of violation. Second, it is hypothesized that technical ability affects violation tendency of environmental regulations. It is found that as R&D investment increases, violation likelihood of environmetal regulations decrease. It can be conjectured that R&D investment may improve technical abilities of observing environment regulations. Third, it is investigated whether a firm's financial capability affects violation tendency of environmental regulations. Fourth structural aspects of a firm such as capital intensity, the number of employees and export ratio are investigated. It is found that a firm with more employees per sale amount tends to violate environmental regulations. It is not found any effects of expert ratio nor capital intensity on violation tendency of environmental regulation.

  • This study explores the trajectories of institutionalization for technology transfer both in the U.S. and Korea, particularly focusing on two universities: Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and the University of California (UC). By comparing the diverging paths of the two universities in setting up institutions, this paper examines the limits of and lessons for technology transfer policies both to Korean government and universities in Korea. The University of California was involved in designing rules and codes, on one hand, to stimulate its members' engagements with technology transfer activity and, on the other hand, to keep its academic integrity since, no later than, the 1960s. The efforts and consequences range from its rules of patenting system to its codes of conducts. Through making rules formal and resolving conflicts on technology transfer activity, the U.S., and the University of California have decreased uncertainties for its members' engagements with industries. By contrast, KAIST has not built up such range of rules or codes due to its shorter experience and its constraining legal contexts. Korea introduced the legal format of the US Bayh-Dole Act in 2002, and its central government has led the initiatives for technology transfer, not allowing much latitude for its universities. This study implies a set of policy recommendations to the Korean government and KAIST: to build entrepreneurial universities, the government should give greater latitude to universities, so universities should be more rigorously engaged in developing their own rules and routines; the government, rather, should focus on providing bridging R&D funds like the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), so researchers could draw on resources to move their basic research into next phases; KAIST would be better to promote its members to engage with industries, and introduce conduct codes that allow its academics to engage in industrial activity, rather than building up its commercialization facilities.

  • Although a commercialization of developed technology is an important factor for firm's competitiveness, the success rate in technology commercialization is significantly low. This fact raises a need of an analysis on factors affecting success in technology commercialization. Thus, in this study, in order to determine the success factors of technology commercialization, statistical analysis is done on 4 different elements of Korean automobile industry firms: managerial group attitude, market orientation, technology quality, and government support; and developed a causal-relationship model of the above elements and commercialization. In the developed model, two moderating variables, corporate ability and industry classification, are added to determine the level of correlations respect to two moderating variables. As a result of hypothesis tests, market orientation, managerial attitude as an antecedent variable; and government support, technology quality as an antecedent variable, both have significant correlation with technology commercialization. For moderating variables, a corporate ability has moderating effects on the connections of managerial attitude, market orientation and technology commercialization; but an industry classification has a moderating effect only on the link between technology quality and government support. The results of this research serve a contribution to the development of R&D efficiency improvement by providing government with direction in science & technology policy.

  • Market instability offers opportunities as well as the need for careful innovation strategies and learning for a company's survival. Companies that find new opportunities decide to carry out innovation and decide on the size of their investments by considering their position in the market they are aiming for and the intensity of competition. This study was conducted to check whether obstacles to innovation face by SMEs in the manufacturing sector vary depending on the stage of corporate growth and to identify the impact of the government support system on the decision-making process on the performance of innovation. According to the analysis, there were differences in obstacles to innovation depending on the stage of corporate growth. It was found that more innovative SMEs are, more obstacles they face, and to overcome such obstacles, they try to access government support systems more. In addition, the use of a government support system eliminated obstacles to innovation, and the positive and significant effects of investing in innovation were identified. This study is meaningful in that it explicitly approached these hypotheses by applying a multistage model to the process of innovation carried out by SMEs in the manufacturing sector.
