  • The reproductive characteristics of Chaenogobius gulosus was examined using 333 specimens collected monthly between October 2008 and September 2009 in the coastal waters of Tongyoung, Korea. Specimens ranged from 2.0 to 12.6 cm in standard length (SL). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in February and decreased until April, with the spawning season lasting from December to April. The monthly ratio of female to male did not significantly differ (${\chi}^2$-test, p>0.05). The size at 50% maturity for females was 7.9 cm SL. Fecundity ranged from 1,112 to 6,059 eggs, with a mean of 3,011 eggs.

  • The age and spawning characteristics of Iksookimia pacifica were investigated in this study to provide baseline data for its ecological characteristics in the Bukcheon (stream), Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea from January to December, 2013. Age groups of I. pacifica (female) estimated by the frequency distribution of total length in the spawning season indicated that the 30~49 mm group is 1 year old, the 50~74 mm group is 2 years old, the 75~99 mm group is 3 years old, the 100~124 mm group is 4 years old, and the 130~160 mm group is $5{\leq}$years old. The sex ratio (♂/♀) was 0.63, and females were 30~60 mm larger than males. The lamina circularis at the base of pectoral fins in males as a secondary sexual character was created at the 13th month after hatching. The spawning season according to the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was July to August (main spawning season in July) with water temperatures of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. The average number of eggs was $2,503{\pm}1,337$ with a diameter of $1.11{\pm}0.04mm$ in mature eggs.

  • Marbled flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae is a commercially important flatfish in the coastal waters of the East Sea off Pohang, Korea. Maturity and spawning dynamics of P. yokohamae were investigated based on samples collected by gill net and long line in the coastal waters off Pohang from January 2013 to December 2014. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity, and total length at 50% group maturity. We found that the spawning period was December to February, wherein fecundity ranged from 55,760 eggs at 20.40 cm total length (TL) to 1,559,007 eggs at 46.6 cm TL. The relationship between TL and fecundity (F) was F = 0.0017 TL3.5604 (R2 = 0.6984), and F increased with increasing TL. We estimated the TL at 50% group maturity as 27.4 cm for female and 23.5 cm for male P. yokohamae, respectively. The results from this research will aid in the development of policies on season and minimum catch length for sustainable production of P. yokohamae. We propose that it is necessary to conduct long-term ecological monitoring for this species because biological properties such as spawning ecology and growth performance are being affected by climate change.

  • Mercury is an element of special concern for human health. Measurements of total mercury levels in fish have been taken into consideration to assess risk. In this study, the Antarctic toothfish Dissostichus mawsoni was evaluated as a potential safe food source through measurement of total mercury contents. Total mercury concentrations in Antarctic toothfish ranged from $0.101{\pm}0.047mg/kg$ to $0.139{\pm}0.075mg/kg$. The total mercury concentration was significantly correlated with macroscopic values including total fish length, weight, gonadosomatic index, and maturity (P < 0.01 or 0.05). Furthermore, according to the risk assessment, the total mercury body exposure rate from Antarctic toothfish ranged from 2.125% to 2.847% of the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake. Therefore, the Antarctic toothfish could be used as a potential safe seafood source.

  • In this study, we examined the maturation and spawning of yellowback seabream Dentex tumifrons using samples collected by monthly bottom trawling in Korean coastal waters from January to December 2018. We analyzed monthly changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI), maturity stage, histology, fecundity, and total length at group maturity. Spawning occurred in May and October. Fecundity varied with total length as F=1.3754TL3.2664, with a range of 1,220 to 155,625 eggs per female. At group maturity, 50%, 75%, and 97.5% estimates of female total length were 18.4, 20.5, and 25.3 cm, respectively.

  • The maturity and spawning of pacific sand eels Ammodytes japonicus, was investigated using samples collected by gill net in coastal waters near Donghae, Gangwon-do, from January 2017 to December 2018. Monthly changes were analyzed in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity (F), and total length (TL) at 50% group maturity. The average TLs of female and male A. japonicus were 18.5 and 18.1 cm, respectively. The spawning period was from November to March, with the peak from December to February based on monthly changes in GSI and maturity stages. The egg diameter during the spawning-capable stage was 300-1000 (main mode 500-600) ㎛. Fecundity ranged from 6,411 eggs at 16.7 cm fork length to 45,771 eggs at 24.7 cm fork length. The relationship between TL and F was F=0.00005TL4.2715 (R2=0.7216), such that F increased with TL. TL at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 15.1 cm for both sexes.

  • The maturation and spawning of red seabream Pagrus major were investigated using 1,014 samples collected monthly from January to December of 2018, in the South Sea of Korea. Based on monthly changes in maturity stage and gonadosomatic index, the spawning period was estimated to be between April and August, with peak spawning occuring from May to June. Fecundity varied between 228,996 and 4,544,948 eggs. The relationship between fecundity (F) and fork length (FL) in this species can be expressed by the equation F=0.4869FL3.9452 (R2=0.7448). Using a logistic function, the percentage of sexually mature females was estimated to be over 50% for fish with a FL of 35.3 cm.

  • Filefish Thamnaconus modestus has seen a sharp decline in their catch, we must strive for continuous resource management. We investigated the maturation and spawning of T. modestus by trawl net and set net from January 2018 to November 2019, off Jeju Is. and in coastal waters of North Gyeongsang Province's Korea. We analyzed monthly change total length (cm), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturity stages, egg diameter (mm), the relations fecundity and total length. GSI for Jeju Is. was the highest in April (3.17, 2.43), and decreased from July to 1.73 in August and GyeongBuk's GSI was the highest in Apri l (1.86, 2.58), followed by the high in May and the sharp decline in September, which is 0.23. Using a histological method, the annual reproductive cycle of T. modestus can be divided into 5stage in females; the early growing stage (Jan.-Mar.), late growing stage (Apr.-May), Mature stage, spent stage (Oct.), Recover and resting stage (Nov.-Jan.).We estimate the TL at 50% maturity as 24.1cm for female, fecundity ranged from 560,044 eggs at 23.4cm total length to 1,580,387 eggs at 36.6.cm TL.
