Sexual maturation and reproductive cycle of the bat star Asterina pectinifera were investigated by histological method. Specimens were collected monthly in Donghwari, Gosunggun, Korea from January 2004 to February 2005. The bat star was dioecious. The gonads are composed of a number of gametogenic follicles. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female and male were reached the maximum in July (5.72, 4.54) and the minimum in December (0.89) and January, February (0.51), and the gonad index (GI) of female and male were reached the maximum in July (3.53, 3.91) and the minimum in August (0.95) and October to December (1.0), respectively. The main spawning was from August to September. The reproductive cycle of the bat star could be divided into five stages: in the female, inactive (November-February), early active (January February), late active (March-June), ripe (July), spent and degenerative (August-November) and in the male, inactive (November-February), early active (January-March), late active (April-June), ripe (July), spent and degenerative (August-October), respectively.
An experiment was conducted for 80 days to determine the effect of feeding and starvation on the survival, growth, gonad-somatic index (GSI), hepato-somatic index (HSI), viscera index (LSI), the morphometric changes and hematological parameter in a cultured catfish, Silurus asotus. The survival and growth of the starved group was lower than those of the fed group during the experiment. Starvation resulted in retardation of growth, which provides examples of the reduction of final body weight, growth rate of body weight, specific growth rate and condition factor, whereas the fed group continued to grow and remained in good condition. Blood analysis (cortisol, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, red blood cell and hemoglobin) showed significant differences between the fed and starved groups at the end of the experiment. These results suggest that all nutritional parameters used for starvation and feeding in this study appear to be a useful index of nutritional status in the cultured catfish.
Gonadal development, fertilization and egg development in the maternal body and reproductive cycle of ovoviviparous rockfish, Sebastes inermis, were investigated histologically. Gonadosomatic index(GSI) of male and female were increased from September and reached maximum values in December. In the male, GSI decreased from January, but in the female maintained high values till February and decreased from March. Hepatosomatic index(HSI) was related to GSI conversely. In both sex, HSI increased from February and reached maximum in August as the gonad were degenerating and resting, and began to decrease from September as gonad were glowing. This ovoviviparous rockfish copulates in December. Fertilization with sperms maintained between ovulated oocytes in the ovary occurs in January mainly. Egg development in the ovarian cavity and discharging of hatched preiarva occurs from January to February. The reproductive cycle includes the successive stages: Growing(September), Mature (October-November), Ripe and Fertilization(Decembr-Janua), Egg development and Discharging of hatched larva(January-February), Degeneration and Resting(February-August). According to the frequency distribution of egg diameter and histological observation, the ovoviviparous rockfish discharged the prelarva at a time in a spawning season. The sexual maturation is first attained at 2 ages. All females and males reaches first maturity at body length of 17.1cm and 15.1cm respectively. The mean number of the embryos increased with the increase of the total length of female.
The reproduction of marbled sole Limanda yokohamae, caught near around the southeastern coast of Korea, from December 1983 to November 1984, was investigated based on such annual variations as gonadosomatic index(GSL), gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, spawning number, hepatosomatic index (HSI), and fatness. GSI began to increase in the autumn season with the onset of shorter day length and colder water temperature, and reached the maximum value in December with the shortest day length and the lowest temperature over the year. The gonad activated the proliferation of oogonia and spermatogonia in June, reached the mature stage in October, ripe in December, and spawning from the end of December to January. After spawning, it showed the resting stage which gonad remained regressive and suppressive from February to May. In addition, the adult individuals observed discharged eggs only once during their spawning period. At yolk globular stage, the substance of vitellogenin synthesized from the liver was considered to participate in the active yolk accumulation of oocytes. Marbled sole was concluded to be a typical winter spawning species in that such environmental factors as short day length and low water temperature were closely related with the gametogenesis, the stimulation of oocyte maturation, and were also affecting the ovulation.

The ecophysiological characteristics of the oyster Crassostrea gigas in Taean area, west coast of Korea, were investigated after main spawning season from September 2011 to January 2012 to confirm the recovery process of condition. The cupped oysters, from 4 different off-bottom culture areas were compared the gonad indices, histological analysis combined with measurement of RNA/DNA contents and ratios in gonad of each sex were undertaken. To evaluate the health condition of oyster after spawning, the RNA/DNA ratio in adductor muscle, fatness and condition index (CI) were used. The results showed that cupped oysters cultured in Uihang coastal area were different physiological aspects than other experiment areas, namely continuously decreasing RNA/DNA content and ratio in adductor muscle, lowest CI and fatness. Oysters cultured in Iwon Station 1 and 2 showed fast recovery in RNA/DNA, increase in fatness and CI during post-spawning stage until October rapidly and there after it decreased. Oysters in Shinduri showed rapidly decrease in fatness and CI until October. On the contrary to this factors, RNA/DNA ratio in adductor muscle increased as like protein until October. Partially spawning season could be observed until December in Shinduri and Iwon Station 1.
Background: Despite the favorable geo-climatic potential of Cameroon, the national production of tilapia remains low due to poor tilapia growth reported by fish farmers. One of the underlying reasons is the early female maturation at a very small size and precocious breeding in earthen ponds, resulting in overpopulation which leads to stunted growth and therefore to the production of unmarketable fish size. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation of G. kola enhanced growth in young Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus. It was also reported that G. kola inhibited spawning in Tilapia adult females. Therefore, this study sought to assess the effects of Garcinia kola as growth promoter and inhibitor of gonadal development in young Oreochromis niloticus. Methods: A total of 108 juveniles weighing $13.32{\pm}0.62g$ were randomly distributed in 9 hapas of 12 fishes each (9 females and 3 males) and fed for 70 days with three isonitrogenous diets, 40% crude protein with increasing Garcinia kola supplementation levels of 0 (normal diet), 6% and 10% (experimental diets). Physico-chemical parameters of the water (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and transparency) were measured twice a week. Every 14 days, fish were harvested, counted, and weighed. At the end of the experiment, three fish of each sex per replicate were sacrificed and their gonad and liver collected and weighed. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance repeated measure followed by Newman-Keuls multiple tests. Results: The results showed that all physico-chemical parameters of the water were within the recommended values for Tilapia culture. Tilapia fed 6% Garcinia kola supplemented diet displayed higher final body weight in males ($38.60{\pm}3.50g$) and females ($36.77{\pm}3.62g$) compared to those receiving normal diet ($36.23{\pm}1.36g$ and $25.87{\pm}3.32g$; respectively to the final body weight in males and females). The gonadosomatic index and hepatosomatic index indicated no significant variation in males while in females, these were significantly low in the experimental fish compared to control fish. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that supplementation of G. kola seeds in diets of young Tilapia improved growth performance and impaired gonadal development in females.
The gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic Index (HSI), egg size distribution, gonad development and reproductive characteristics of venus fish, Aphyocypris chinensis, were examined during March 1997- March 1998 in agricultural waterways of the Sedo-myun, Puyo county, Chungnam Province, Korea. Annual reproductive cycle was classified into the following five successive phases by monthly changes in GSI and the characteristics of ovary: quiescent phase (January- February), secondary growing and mature phase (March-May), ripe and spawning phase (June-July), degenerating and resting phase (August-September) and primary growing phase (October-December). The hepatosomatic index (HSI) showed clear seasonal pattern with two separate peaks. However, it exhibited a negative correlation to changes of GSI values. The regression analysis suggested that fecundity showed a strong positive linear relationship ($r^2\;=\;0.91$, n = 34) with body weight. The sex ratio of female to male was 1.4 : 1 in the natural population during the study. The minimum reproductive size of female and male venus fish was 38 mm and 33 mm in fork length, respectively.

This study evaluated ecological health, using various biomarkers and bioindicators, of pale chub (Zacco platypus) as a sentinel species, in Daejeon Stream, South Korea, during AprilMay 2011. The biomarkers and bioindicators were compared among three sites of control: Reference ($C_z$), transition ($T_z$), and the urban zones ($U_z$); and the 7-Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, DNA damage, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and vitellogenin (VTG) concentrations were more significantly increased in the $U_z$ than in the $C_z$. Also, physiological markers such as condition factor, liver somatic index, visceral somatic index, and gonad somatic index were significantly increased in the $U_z$ than in the $C_z$. For the health assessments, three categorized parameters of blood chemistry, molecular biomarkers, and physiological bioindicators were standardized and calculated as a star-plot, representing values of Integrated Health Response (IHR). Values of IHR had more significant (P<0.05) increases in the $U_z$ than any other zones, indicating an impairment of ecological health by organic matter, nutrients (N, P), and toxic chemicals. This study is based on low levels of biological organization approach of molecular and physiological biomarkers and bioindicators, so further study of high-levels of biological organization approach such as community and population is required for overall range of health assessments. The approach of IHR values, however, may be useful in providing early warning of future impacts on ecological health.

The feeding habits of Lycodes tanakae Eelpout were studied with 722 specimens collected from March 2011 to December 2012 in the coastal waters of the middle East Sea. The main prey of L. tanakae were fish, molluscs and arthropods. Nevertheless annelida, echinodermata and others were found in small amounts in the stomach contents. The L. tanakae stomach was empty of contents in 50.9% of specimens. While smaller size specimens of L. tanakae (less than 40 cm) fed mainly on euphausiids and amphipods, the larger specimens (more than 40 cm) fed on the fish Allolepis hollandi and Icelus cataphractus, and the molluscs Berryteuthis magister and Watasenia scintillans. The main prey items of L. tanakae varied seasonally. The fish Lycodes nakamurai was the dominat prey from November to January during its spawning season. Euphausiids and amphipods of the arthropods were the dominant prey from February to April. The molluscs Berryteuthis magister and Watasenia scintillans were the dominant prey from May to September. The diversity index (H') of diets showed variations by length class and month; the highest values were 2.61 in the length class of 51-55 cm, and the monthly highest were 2.68 in September with 23 species and 2.65 in November with 18 species. The highest dominance index (D') of diets was 0.57 in the length class of 31-35 cm, and the monthly highest was 0.71 in February. Cluster analysis divided prey groups into four groups by length class and three groups by monthly prey items. The gonad index gradually increased during the process of maturation while, contrary, stomach content index decreased during this period.
Gonadosomatic index, condition index and reproductive cycle with the gonadal development of the female Octopus ocellatus were investigated by histological observations and morphometric data, from January to December, 2000. And changes in biochemical components of the ovary and the trunk tissues including the digestive organ associated with gonadal development were studied by biochemical analysis from January to October, 2001. The specimens were collected at the coastal waters of Buan, Jeollabuk-do, Korea, from January 2000 to October 2001. O. ocellatus is a dioecious organism. The gonad of O. ocellatus locates medially in posterior region of the body. Morphology of the ovary shows round and oval in shape, the average diameter and external colour of ripe ovary was 32 mm and semitransparent light brown in colour. As the ovary was getting mature, transparent elongated eggs covered with chorion were present in the ovarian cavity. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed a similar pattern with those of the condition index. The GSI and condition index began to increase in March and reached the maximum in April. And then, their values decreased from May and reached the minimum in September. Reproductive cycle of O. ocellatus can be categorized into five successive stages: early developing stage (September to December), late developing stage (November to March), ripe stage (March to May), partially spawned stage (April to June), and degenerative/resting stage (June to October). Follicle cells attached to an oocyte were involved in vitellogenesis in the cytoplasm of the vitellogeneic oocyte and formation of chorion (secondary egg membrane) of the ovarian eggs. Spawning occurred between April and June. The spawning period was once a year and the peak took place between May and June. This species belongs to semelparity. According to changes in biochemical contents of the ovary and the digestive organ, monthly variations of moisture, total protein, total lipid and glycogen contents (%) in the ovary showed a negative correlationship with those of the trunk tissues including the digestive organ. Accordingly, it is assumed that the ovary only may be received nutrient supply (total lipid content) for gonadal development from the trunk tissues including the digestive organ (r = -0.55, p < 0.05).
