The goal of this study is to investigate the current status of implementation of convergence education in elementary, middle, and high schools. A survey was conducted on 871 in-service teachers nationwide, and frequency analysis was conducted by school level. Key findings are as follows: first, 449 (51.5%) are found to practice convergence education. Second, the reason for implementing convergence education is the voluntary effort of teachers and the educational necessity for the future society. Third, it was found that convergence education is being implemented centered on science, arts, and social studies as a link between subjects in regular curriculum hours. Fourth, 270 (64%) of teachers who implemented convergence education in response to COVID-19 performed online convergence education, and experienced difficulties in creating class materials and communicating with students. Fifth, the excessive work of teachers, insufficient support for teacher training and research group activities, and lack of various convergence education programs are suggested as reasons for not implementing convergence education. This study hopes to provide implications for policy and implementation for revitalizing convergence education.
This study analyzed the research papers published in three (2 domestic and 1 foreign) journals, in order to understand the recent trend of chemistry education research. We selected Journal of the Korean Chemical Society (JKCS) and Journal of the Korean Association for Science Education (JKASE) as the domestic journals, and Journal of Chemical Education (JCE) as a foreign journal. The papers published from 2000 to 2009 were analyzed. As the result, the chemistry education research theme focused on 'teaching method and education technology', 'learner's characteristics', and 'chemical concept and experiment' in the order of frequency. The research on 'curriculum and textbooks' was performed often in JKCS reflecting Korean social environment. The most researched chemistry education goal was the 'conceptual understanding/change' followed by 'achievement/grade' in JCE and 'experiment/inquiry skill' in JKCS, and 'attitude/interest/motivation' in JKASE. The research subjects were focused to 'middle or high school students' in JKCS, in contrast to the 'university students' in JCE. More concern to the higher education is required in the domestic research. The most frequently used research method was 'survey/ examination' followed by 'experimental research' in JCE and JKASE and 'data/material analysis' in JKCS. We discussed the implication on future chemistry education research.

This study aims to examine genetics problem-solving processes of high school students with different learning approaches. Two second graders in high school participated in a task that required solving the complicated pedigree problem. The participants had similar academic achievements in life science but one had a deep learning approach while the other had a surface learning approach. In order to analyze in depth the students' problem-solving processes, each student's problem-solving process was video-recorded, and each student conducted a think-aloud interview after solving the problem. Although students showed similar errors at the first trial in solving the problem, they showed different problem-solving process at the last trial. Student A who had a deep learning approach voluntarily solved the problem three times and demonstrated correct conceptual framing to the three constraints using rule-based reasoning in the last trial. Student A monitored the consistency between the data and her own pedigree, and reflected the problem-solving process in the check phase of the last trial in solving the problem. Student A's problem-solving process in the third trial resembled a successful problem-solving algorithm. However, student B who had a surface learning approach, involuntarily repeated solving the problem twice, and focused and used only part of the data due to her goal-oriented attitude to solve the problem in seeking for answers. Student B showed incorrect conceptual framing by memory-bank or arbitrary reasoning, and maintained her incorrect conceptual framing to the constraints in two problem-solving processes. These findings can help in understanding the problem-solving processes of students who have different learning approaches, allowing teachers to better support students with difficulties in accessing genetics problems.

The importance of science education for cultivating the competencies required by an intelligent information society is gradually being strengthened. The government's roles and responsibilities for science education are stipulated by laws and policies in Korea. In order to systematically support science education, continuous monitoring of related policies is essential. This study aims to develop indicators that can be used to systematically and continuously monitor the national policies on science education in Korea. To achieve this goal, we first derive the framework for the indicators that has two dimensions (learner and science education context) and three categories (input, process, and outcome) from literature reviews. In order to derive the components and subcomponents of the indicators, the contents of science education-related indicators developed in Korea or abroad were reviewed. In order to verify the suitability and validity of the framework and components of the initial indicators, a two-round Delphi method was conducted with 25 expert participants with five different professions in science education. Finally, three components of the 'input' category (student characteristics, teacher characteristics, and educational infrastructure), three components of the 'process' category (science curriculum implementation, science educational contents and programs implementation, and teacher professional development program implementation), and five components of the 'outcome' category (science competency, participation and action, affective achievement, cognitive achievement, and satisfaction) were derived. An instrument to collect data from students, teachers, and institutions was developed based on the components and subcomponents, and content validity and internal consistency of the instrument were analyzed. Korea's Science Education Indicators developed in this study can comprehensively measure the current status of science education and is expected to contribute to a more efficient and effective science education policy planning and implementation.

This study explored to what extent Korean science teachers perceived socioscientific issues (SSI) as an effective instructional tool for creativity and character (CreActer) education; which was recently announced as a main goal for the Korean National Science Curriculum 2009. The guiding research questions were as follows. (1)How do science teachers conceptualize the relationship between creativity and character in the context of science classes? (2) What do science teachers think about the possibility of CreActer education through SSI in science classrooms? Thirty science teachers participated in individual interviews (each lasted 20-90 minutes). In the results, the teachers' perceptions on CreActer education and SSI for CreActer education were categorized into four profiles. Eleven teachers in Profile A thought that creativity was positively correlated with character education because their understanding of creativity and character embraced a very broad range of elements. They mentioned that addressing SSI in the science classes would be satisfactory to cover those elements of CreActer education. Six teachers in Profile B mentioned similar elements of creativity and character of Profile A, but reported that, in their experience, creativity was often inversely correlated with character. However, they responded that addressing SSI would be a good way to integrate creativity and character in the science classes. Ten teachers in Profile C believed there was no relationship between creativity and character, but took a positive stance on CreActer education through SSI. Unlike Profile A and Profile B, they tended to regard character as only an interpersonal virtue. And three teachers in Profile D had a narrow perspective on CreActer education. Not only did they think creativity had no relationship with character, but also disagreed that CreActer education would be activated by addressing SSI in science classrooms. The results imply that SSI could be used as an effective instructional tool for CreActer education, but this can be possible when science teachers expand their view on CreActer education.

The goal of this study was to discover factors of difficulties on learning Brønsted-Lowry acid and base focusing viewpoint of each definition. To achieve this, we were targeting statement of textbooks and perception of teachers that have a decisive effect on students' learning. Analysis of textbooks was performed for chemistry I of high school and EBS(total 6 textbooks) which dealt with Brønsted-Lowry definition. And a survey was conducted on 24 science teachers who had Brønsted-Lowry definition teaching experience. According to the textbooks analysis, characteristics of statement way were (1) statement without viewpoint of each definition, (2) convergent statement to Arrhenius. And features of teachers' perceptions were (1) teachers who have the only one viewpoint, (2) teachers with unawareness on coexisting reason of various definitions. All of these can be explained by absence from understanding viewpoints of Arrhenius and Brønsted-Lowry. To promote students' Brønsted-Lowry learning, students should obtain viewpoints of each definition. So we suggest that pre-service teacher training curriculum and statement way of textbook should reflect viewpoints of each definition.
The main goal of the research is to develop instructional consulting manual to help math teachers improve classroom teaching. Improving the quality of teaching in schools is stressed as a central focus of meaningful classroom instruction and high quality education. In this research, teaching consulting was defined as an activity that covers reflection process oriented towards formative assessment and continuing professional development. Within this context, subject-specific teaching consulting and teaching professionalism with focus on PCK was reviewed. Further, the questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the current situation of teaching consulting and teachers' needs for consulting. And also, specific examples of subject-specific consulting based on our previous consulting experiences in math classes were shown. Alternative ways to improve subject teaching were derived through the conferences where consultants and consultees analyze video-taped lessons conducted by the consultees. By those results, a manual for invigorating teaching consulting was developed. The contents of the manual consists of setting conditions of teaching consulting and its implementation in the classroom teaching. The first part of the manual contains steps to establish teaching consulting system, the qualification and role of the consultant, system evaluation, etc. The second part of the manual presents the pre-preparation, prescription and implementation and follow-up management steps. Each part of the manual provides consultants with specific guidelines for each step. Finally, recommendations for making policy related to ways to invigorate teaching consulting was suggested. It is expected that specific examples and cases of subject-specific teaching consulting presented in this research will be used to narrow the gap between theory and practice of teaching consulting, and to help math, science and English teachers develop teaching professionalism.
The importance of citizen as a key of community safety has increased, and the legislation to support the citizen's activities is continued. However systematic and detailed action plans are not enough to something. Thus, the purpose of this research is to develop the educational program model for the citizens on patrol for the improvement of practical use. The methods of this research are to make and suggest the educational program for citizens on patrol by literature review and cases analysis of educational program implemented one years ago. The findings are suggested as belows. First, the learners need the contents can be practically used in the field and sufficient time of education. Second, the subgoal to achieve the ultimate goal of education program model should be established as 'customer-centered, field-oriented, competence reinforcement', and driving strategy must be composed of four stages as plan-design-implementation-evaluation. Also, for strategy of each stage, detailed sub-strategies from preparation to execution of education have to be considered. Third, education program must be categorized by basic-intermediate-expert courses depending on the level of learners, and theoretically and practically oriented curriculum subjects are organized in balance by each course.
The purpose of this study focuses on developing the outplacement competency of special security government official for which precedent reference research, expert review, and expert Delphi analysis used according to three steps of study process. The final Delphi examination analysis resulted in outplacement competency into four groups of competency and twenty-two subcategories. Thus, it is very worthy to develop outplacement's competencies necessary for outplacement of special security government official through expert's Delphi examination in the first time, which have not being researched until now, and to present them theoretically through clarification and verification process accomplished by experts and staffs related to outplacement. Individual effort is essential to strengthen their capabilities based on accurate self evaluation, for which the awareness and concept need to be redefined to help them face up to the reality by readjusting career goal to a realistic level. Also, active career development plan to improve shortcoming in terms of outplacement competency is required. The result of this study, which ouplacement successors of special security government officials participated studying process, will be used as the basic data to establish an outplacement curriculum and an educational system for strengthening competency necessary for outplacement of special security government official.

This study proposes a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program for career exploration of middle school students. The proposed program utilizes VR (Virtual Reality) for new digital technology and webtoon as a popular cultural element. It enables the students to investigate promising fields and experience them virtually for themselves. We design the program based on the 2015 revised curriculum, which enhances the learning effects with existing subjects. In particular, the program provides a hybrid education to combine contact and untact classes considering the COVID-19 situation. The educational goal of the proposed program is to improve creativity and convergence capability. Specifically, it aims to prepare an educational foundation that integrates new digital technologies into education and applies the programs to school education fields. To prove the effectiveness of the developed program, we applied the program to the second graders of A middle school located in Seoul. We expect that the proposed program helps students learn how to utilize new digital technologies and explore future career paths.
