  • An increase in seawater temperature owing to global warming is expected to substantially limit the growth of marine algae, including Pyropia yezoensis, a commercially valuable red alga. To improve our knowledge of the genes involved in the acquisition of heat tolerance in P. yezoensis, transcriptomes sequences were obtained from both the wild-type SG104 P. yezoensis and heat-tolerant mutant Gy500. We selected 1,251 differentially expressed genes that were up- or downregulated in response to the heat stress condition and in the heat-tolerant mutant Gy500, based on fragment per million reads expression values. Among them, PyHRG1 was downregulated under heat stress in SG104 and expressed at a low level in Gy500. PyHRG1 encodes a secretory protein of 26.5 kDa. PyHRG1 shows no significant sequence homology with any known genes deposited in public databases to date. However, PyHRG1 homologs were found in other red algae, including other Pyropia species. When PyHRG1 was introduced into the single-cell green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, transformed cells overexpressing PyHRG1 showed severely retarded growth. These results demonstrate that PyHRG1 encodes a novel red algae-specific protein and plays a role in heat tolerance in algae. The transcriptome sequences obtained in this study, which include PyHRG1, will facilitate future studies to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in heat tolerance in red algae.

  • Analysis and prediction of storm surges are very important because the global warming has raised sea levels and increased the frequency of massive typhoons, accelerating damage of coastal flooding. However, the data for storm surge prediction is lacking due to the short history of observation in South Korea. The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the previous surges and tsunamis based on the historical documents published during the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, we tried to evaluate the damage and spatial extent of such disasters, using the expressions about surge records including heights and number of administrative divisions. As a result, a total of 175 records of surges and tsunamis were compiled from 1392 to 1910: 145 events were extracted through the analysis of the ancient documents, and 30 events were from the previous research. Most of the strorm surges occurred along the west coast during summer season. More than half of the total surges were concentrated for 120 years from the mid 1600s to the mid 1700s, which was estimated to be highly relevant to the climate conditions in East Asia during the Little Ice Age. Hazardous areas by storm and tidal surges were also extracted, including Asan, Ganghwa, and Siheung during the Joseon Dyanisity period.

  • The world today has reached a certain level where it is impossible to get the quality education at the tertiary level without the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). ICT has made life better, communication easier and faster, teaching and learning more practical through computers and other technology based learning tools. However, despite these benefits ICT has equally contributed immensely to environmental problems. Therefore there is the need to use ICT resources efficiently in universities for environmental sustainability so as to save both the university environment and the world at large from the effects of global warming. This paper evaluates the carbon footprints from the use of ICT devices and comes up with a proposed green ICT framework to reduce the carbon footprints in universities. The framework contains techniques and approaches to achieve greenness in the data center, personal computers (PCs) and monitors, and printing in order to make ICT more environmentally friendly, cheaper, safer and ultimately more efficient. Concerned experts in their respective departments at Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) Malaysia evaluated the proposed framework. It was found to be effective for achieving efficiency, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

  • Recently, Hybrid Electric Vehicle(: HEV) is in the spotlight to global warming caused by carbon dioxide and emission reduction. HEV consists of a combination of mechanical engine and electric motor system. The flow of energy required to drive a HEV depends on the driving conditions of the vehicle. In this paper, we study the contents of HEV education using real-time monitoring system. A real-time monitoring system consisting of hardware and virtual programs is used to simulate the overall operation of a HEV through simulations according to driving conditions and to explain how to learn through hardware.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the sixth curriculum textbooks of high school science courses in relation to the greenhouse effect concept and find the incorrect descriptions of that concept and then suggest some improved schemes. Some incorrect descriptions, pictures and tables on the greenhouse effect concept were found in texts. They might contribute to forming and/or reinforcing misconceptions about that concept: the important greenhouse gases, the changes caused by the greenhouse effect, global warming, energy sources, greenhouse experiments and physical processes. Therefore some improved schemes were suggested

  • Since the late 20th century, countries of the world have made every effort to solve environmental problems due to global warming. The Korean Government has also made various efforts on reducing energy and $CO_2$ emission under the motto of "Low-Carbon Green Growth". In order to achieve the goal to reduce energy in the construction field, severe design standards and regulations on saving energy in new buildings have been established. However, for maximizing the reduction of energy in buildings, it is time to focus on deteriorated buildings where applications of energy saving designs and techniques have been insufficient. Especially, there are little guidelines and researches on reducing energy through remodeling at deteriorated school buildings which were built over 20 years ago. This paper suggests the priority of factors to reduce energy on the remodeling process at deteriorated school buildings using the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. For applying the AHP method, the survey of staffs in the Education Offices and board members in the Korea Institute of Ecological Architecture and Environment was conducted via e-mail. As a result, factors of insulation, daylighting, system control, and windows turned out important in the energy reducing remodeling process at deteriorated school buildings, while factors of artificial lighting, solar heating, ventilation, and system did relatively unimportant.

  • With global warming and the rapid increase in urbanization accompanied by a concentration of population, the urban heat island effects (UHI) have become an important environmental issue. In this study, rooftop greening and permeable asphalt pavement were selected as measures to reduce urban heat island and applied to a simple virtual urban environment to simulate temperature change using ENVI-met. A total of five measures were tested by dividing the partial and whole area application of each measure. The results showed that the temperature range of the base experiment is 33.11-37.11 ℃, with the UTCI comfort level described as strong heat and very strong heat stress. A case applied permeable asphalt has a greater temperature difference than a rooftop greening case, the larger the area where each condition was applied, the greater the temperature change was.

  • Methane is an abundant and renewable hydrocarbon, but it causes global warming as a greenhouse gas. Therefore, methods to convert methane into useful chemicals or energy sources are needed. Methanol is a simple and abundant chemical that can be synthesized by the partial oxidation of methane. Methanol can be used as a chemical feedstock or a transportation fuel, as well as a fuel for low-temperature fuel cells. However, the electrochemical oxidation of methanol is a complex and multi-step reaction. To understand and optimize this reaction, new electrocatalysts and reaction mechanisms are required. This review discusses the methanol oxidation reaction mechanism, recent research trends, and future research directions.

  • Scooters are a popular way to get around on your own in many places, such as Taiwan, India, Thailand, etc., because they are easy to move around in, small, and cheaper to buy than cars. On the other hand, traditional scooters that run on fossil fuels put some pollution into the air and add to problems like global warming and air pollution. Switching from scooters that run on fossil fuels to electric scooters can help clean up the air in cities with much pollution. To promote the use of electric scooters, it's important to know how consumers feel about them. The current study investigates consumers' purchase intentions for electric scooters. Based on the questionnaire survey results (n = 567), we found that consumers' environmental concerns, price consciousness, and perceived subjective norms are associated with electric scooter purchase intention. Consumers with price consciousness may choose fossil-fuel-powered scooters because they consider electric-powered scooters more costly, although environmentally friendly. The study gives researchers and practitioners a glimpse into consumers' environmental concerns and subjective norms for a sustainable product.
