  • This study focuses on the earthquake performance of two URM buildings having typical architectural configurations common for residential use constructed per pre-modern code in Albania. Both buildings are unreinforced clay brick masonry structures constructed in 1960 and 1984, respectively. The first building is a three-storey unreinforced one with masonry walls. The second one is confined masonry rising on five floors. Mechanical characteristics of masonry walls were determined based on experimental tests conducted according to ASTM C67-09 regulations. A global numerical model of the buildings was built, and masonry material was simulated as nonlinear. Pushover analyses are carried out to obtain capacity curves. Displacement demands were calculated according to Eurocode 8 and FEMA440 guidelines. Causes of building failures in recent earthquakes were examined using the results of this study. The results of the study showed that the URM building displays higher displacement and shear force demands that can be directly related to damage or collapse. On the other hand, the confined one exhibits relatively higher seismic resistance by indicating moderate damage. Moreover, effects of demand estimation approaches on performance assessment of URM buildings were compared. Deficiencies and possible solutions to improve the capacity of such buildings were discussed.

  • The purpose of this research is to find a solution for matching service between recruiting and job seeking of software developers. An efficient matching service solution is essential for acquiring solid global competitiveness in software industry and IT academia. An in-depth analysis on deep-rooted problems on mismatching has been performed. Past and present policies on mismatching solutions have been reviewed based on desirable co-growth structure. A new matching solution has been derived and a triple-helix strategy has been suggested. A survey result for 14 domain experts and 85 employees of large and small software companies shows that the suggested matching solution is useful. The results of this research can be used for finding a better matching service solution and policies.

  • Several bacterial etiological agents of streptococcal disease have been associated with fish mortality and serious global economic loss. Bacterial identification based on biochemical, molecular, and phenotypic methods has been routinely used, along with assessment of morphological analyses. Among these, the molecular method of 16S rRNA sequencing is reliable, but presently, advanced genomics are preferred over other traditional identification methodologies. This review highlights the geographical variation in strains, their relatedness, as well as the complexity of diagnosis, pathogenesis, and various control methods of streptococcal infections. Several limitations, from diagnosis to control, have been reported, which make prevention and containment of streptococcal disease difficult. In this review, we discuss the challenges in diagnosis, pathogenesis, and control methods and suggest appropriate molecular (comparative genomics), cellular, and environmental solutions from among the best available possibilities.

  • Followed by the popularity of the Internet, a number of access technologies to the Internet have been developed. EAP is an authentication framework. It is designed to provide the authentication functionality in the access network. Because of its flexibility and extensibility EAP poses a global solution for the authentication supported by many access networks. However, EAP has critical weaknesses in the protocol which may, in turn, decrease the EAP performance. Some of the weaknesses are caused by the "lock-step" flow control which only supports a single packet in flight. Considering the weaknesses, we propose a solution for the flow control. Using simulation we prove that our solutions improve the EAP performance.

  • The composite sandwich plate is constructed by combining two laminated facings with high strength and a thick core of light weight material. The governing equations for the analysis of bending of simply supported sandwich plates with laminated facings are derived and analysed using the analytical method including the local shear deformations. The accuracy of the approach is ascertained by comparing solutions from the sandwich plate theory with composite facings to the laminate plate theory. Since the present analysis considers the bending stiffness of the core and also the transverse shear deformations of the laminated facings, it is expected that the analysis is capable to analyze the general anisotropic laminated plates with global shear deformations.

  • Oxidative stress is one of the major limiting factor in plant productivity. Reactive oxygens species (ROS) generated during metabolic processes damage cellular functions and consequently lead to disease, senescence and cell death. Plants have evolved an efficient defense system by which the ROS is scavenged by antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Attempts to reduce oxidative damages under the stress conditions have included the manipulation of 갠 scavenging enzymes by gene transfer technology. Increased SOD activities of transgenic plants lead to increased resistance against oxidative stresses derived from methyl viologen (MV), and from photooxidative damage caused by high light and low temperature. Transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing APX showed reduced damage following either MV treatment of photooxidative treatment. Overexpression of glutathion reductase (GR) leads to increase in pool of ascorbate and GSH, known as small antioxidant molecules. These results indicate through overexpression of enzymes involved in ROS-scavenging could maintain or improve the plant productivities under environment stress condition. In this study, the rational approaches to develop stress-tolerant plants by gene manipulation of antioxidant enzymes will be introduced to provide solutions for the global food and environmental problems in the $21^\textrm{st}$ century.

  • The position and size of holes in the partition of a double cavity are known to strongly affect the eigenfrequency of the longitudinal eigenmodes of the double cavity. To maximize or minimize the eigenfrequency of the hole-partitioned double cavity, two acoustical topology optimization problems are formulated and solved. While two sub-cavities are filled with air, a partition between them is assumed to consist of sub-partitions of variable acoustical properties. One design variable is assigned to each sub-partition, whose material properties are interpolated as those of an intermediate material between air and a rigid body. The penalty parameter of the used interpolation function is adjusted to obtain a distinct air and rigid body distribution at the converged stage in each acoustical topology optimization problem. A special attention is paid to the selection of initial values of design variables to obtain solutions as close to global optimum and symmetric as possible. To show numerical characteristics of these optimization problems, the formulated problems are first solved for the one-dimensional partition design domain and then for the two-dimensional partition design domain.

  • While global manufacturing is becoming more competitive due to variety of customer demand, increase in production cost and uncertainty in resource availability, the future ability of manufacturing industries depends upon the implementation of Smart Factory. With the convergence of new information and communication technology, Smart Factory enables manufacturers to respond quickly to customer demand and minimize resource usage while maximizing productivity performance. This paper presents the development of a big data analytics platform architecture for Smart Factory. As this platform represents a conceptual software structure needed to implement data-driven decision-making mechanism in shop floors, it enables the creation and use of diagnosis, prediction and optimization models through the use of data analytics and big data. The completion of implementing the platform will help manufacturers: 1) acquire an advanced technology towards manufacturing intelligence, 2) implement a cost-effective analytics environment through the use of standardized data interfaces and open-source solutions, 3) obtain a technical reference for time-efficiently implementing an analytics modeling environment, and 4) eventually improve productivity performance in manufacturing systems. This paper also presents a technical architecture for big data infrastructure, which we are implementing, and a case study to demonstrate energy-predictive analytics in a machine tool system.
