A quantitative study of impact damage of a soda-lime glass was carried out. An initiation and a propagation of cracks by the impact of two inds of steel ball was investigated. The fron, side and rear view of cracks were observed by a stereo-microscope. And the lowering of the benidng strength due to the impact of steel balls was examined through the 4-point bending test. A transparent glass is very helpful to understand and analyze the impact damage behavior of another brittle matereial. A deagdram about crack patterns according to the threshold impact velocity was sketched. A ring crack and a cone crack were formed at the low impact velocity. And as the impact velocity was higher, initial lateral crack was generated on the slanting surface of cone crack, and radial cracks were generated from the outermost ring crack. When the impact velocity of steel balls exceed a critical velocity, the contact site of specimens were crushed. According to the propagation of a cone crack, a rapid strength degradation occurred. In the specimen having crushed region, a bending strength was converged to a constant value instead of strength degradation.

The effects of the stress ratio and the fiber orientation(0.deg./90.deg. and .+-.45.deg.) to the load direction on the fracture behavior of the glass/epoxy plain woven composites were studied. The tests were carried out using compact tension specimens under both static and fatigue loading. The values of $k_{a}$ obtained from the energy release rate are independent of notch depth(a/w=0.2~0.6) for the 0.deg./90.deg. specimens, but decreases with an increase in a/w for the .+-.45.deg. specimens. And $k_{q}$ has higher values than $k_{ASTM}$ has been evaluated by the ASTM E399 test procedure. It is shown in the relation between fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K using modified shape correction factor that da/dN decreases with a decrease in stress ratio and is lower for .+-..deg. specimens than for 0.deg./90.deg. These phenomena can be explained by the crack deflection to the load direction.n.n.

The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for paint of scale removing, deburring and glass decorating has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials, capable of producing micro structures larger than $100{\mu}m$. Recently, this technique is applied to fabrication of the glass cap for OELD packaging. But, micro crack is generated on the blasted glass, which cause to decrease fracture strength. In this paper, we investigated the effect of blasting parameters on surface characteristics, surface shape and fracture strength of the powder blasted glass surface.

Ultrasonic machining (USM) is suitable for machining hard, brittle and non-conductive materials such as silicon, glass and ceramics. Usually, when micro holes are machined on glass by USM, roundness of hole entrance is poor and cracks appear around the hole exit. In this paper the machining characteristics were studied for roundness improvement and exit crack prevention. From experiments, the tool bending and the shape of tool tip affect hole roundness. When the tool tip is hemispherical, good roundness of holes was obtained. The feedrate and the rotational speed of the tool affect the exit crack. With the machining conditions of 150 rpm in spindle speed and $0.5\;{\mu}m/s$ in feedrate, micro holes with less than $100\;{\mu}m$ in diameter were machined without an exit crack.

We studied whether chemical strengthening can heal the flaws on soda-lime silicate glass. Artificial surface cracks were introduced on the glass by sharp indentation with various loads of 0.1 to 10 N. Then, the glasses with flaws were treated by ion-exchanging in KNO3 melt. The change in the dimension of the crack on glass was measured by a digital microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The chemical strengthening treatment enhances the strength of the glass with flaws. It is thought that the melted KNO3 not only forms the depth of the compressed layer of 7.5 ㎛, but also heals the cracks by infiltrating them and expanding the glass on both sides of the cracks. The critical length (2c) of the cracks on soda-lime glass that can be healed by chemical strengthening is 50 ㎛ or less.

When sliding a hard cylinder along the surface of glass, periodic surface cracks appear on the flat surface due to tensile stresses induced by the slider. These cracks propagate into the substrate and will affect the fracture properties of a body. Crack spacings and the directions of crack propagation into glass were calculated numerically by applying the finite element method and linear elastic fracture mechanics. The calculated crack spacings were in the range of the experimental results. Stress intensity factors and crack extension angles depended on the radius of slider and the load, and from these two factors the possible directions of crack propagation were calculated. The calculated propagation directions were in good agreement with real crack propagation.

A CPGFRP(Carbon Powder Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics) sensor was fabricated for fine crack detection of structures. The electrical resistance of the sensor was measured on condition of various composition of carbon powders and thickness of bundle of glass fibers. The resistance was decreased as the increase of the content of carbon powders and the TEX of the glass fibers. In the case of loading on CPGFRP sensor, because inner crack was propagated, the part of percolation structures was disconnected. The sensor is superior to carbon fiber for the detecting ability of fine crack.

Nowadays Laser Controllable Thermo-cleaving is the most promising method of cutting FPD(Flat Panel Display) glass in mass-production line. And this method can be used to cut other brittle materials such as quartz, sapphire, ceramic and semiconductor. The concept of this method is shown in Picture 1. Laser beam heats glass up to strain point not to melting point and cooling system chills glass to make maximum thermal stress in glass and then the thermal stress generates micro thermal crack in other words blind crack. Laser Controllable Thermo-cleaving controls the thermal stress to optimize the blind crack up to level of mass-production line.

The behavior of fatigue delamination in a GLARE(Glass Fiber Reinforced Metal Laminates) under fatigue loading conditions investigated. The behavior of fatigue delamination was examined basing on investigation of the crack and delamination using a SAM (Scanning Acoustic Microscope). The crack and delamination behavior on the relationship among a-N, SAM images and crack length-delamination length were considered. The test results indicated the features of different fatigue delamination and crack growth according to each fiber orientation angle and also obtained to more increase delamination than crack through the relationship between crack length and delamination length in GLARE.

Brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics, which are very weak under impact loading, show fragile failure mode due to their low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs at the impacted surface causing local damage on the specimen. This damage is a dangerous factor in causing the final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda-lime glass by the impact of small spheres is explained and the effects of several constraint conditions for impact damage were studied by using soda-lime glass; that is, the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength were evaluated. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring cracks, cone cracks and several other kinds of cracks.
