  • During the last years hollow core insulators started their success story in the field of high voltage engineering for electrical apparatus, substituting porcelain insulators. The termination, also named top and bottom fittings are used for the connection to the rest of the electrical apparatus. The top and bottom flange are attached to the composite to transmit mechanical load and also ensure the gas tightness. They are bonded by epoxy glue with a glass transition temperature of about $130^{\circ}C$-$150^{\circ}C$ the glass reinforced epoxy tube of filament winding. This paper describes the results of a study on the bonded joints of fiber reinforced epoxy tube and cast aluminum. This suggests that surface roughness and glue types play an important role in evaluating of gas sealing capability on the flange and fiber reinforced epoxy tube in the composite hollow bushing.

  • A composite material is composed of a reinforcement and a matrix, which determine mechanical characteristics of the molded part. There is no doubt that the properties of a composite material depend not only on the characteristics of the matrix but also on the structure of glass fiber mat and a fiber type of reinforcement. Therefore it is very important to study the composites of reinforcement and the matrix, and to control the fiber type in the process of molding of composite materials. In this study, the specimen was made of a glass fiber mat of 6-7mm thickness by scattering it in the air after cutting the glass fiber mat with needle punching makes change according to the type of needle and the number of times of stretching. First the sheet was made by means of a hot-press after accumulating a matrix and a glass fiber according to each mat structure of glass fiber. It was heated the manufactured sheet with the dry oven and molded it a secondary high temperature compression by a 30 ton oilhydraulic press. A definition of a correlation coefficient is showed up during this period and find it out with the relation of the fiber-matrix separation and the fiber orientation. We studied effects of the glass fiber mat structures on the correlation coefficient.

  • This study concentrates the effect of hybridisation on the collapse mode and energy absorption for composite cylinders. The static collapse behavior of laminated(Al/CFRP/GFRP) circular-cylindrical composite shell under quasi-static axial compressive load has been investigated experimentally. Eight different hybrids of laminated(Al/CFRP/GFRP) circular-cylindrical composite shell were fabricated by autoclave. Eight types of composites were tested, namely, Al/carbon fiber/epoxy, Al/glass fiber/epoxy, Al/carbon-carbon-glass/epoxy, Al/carbon-glass-carbon/epoxy, Al/carbon-glass-glass/epoxy, Al/glass-glass-carbon/epoxy, Al/glass-carbon-glass/epoxy and Al/glass-carbon-carbon/epoxy. Collpase modes were highly dominated by the effect of hybridisation. The results also showed that the hybrid member with material sequence of Al-glass-carbon-carbon/epoxy exhibited good energy absorption capability.

  • In recent days, perhaps the biggest driver in new material development is the desire to improve restorations esthetics compared to the traditional metal substructure based ceramics or all-ceramic restorations. Each material type performs differently regarding strength, toughness, effectiveness of machining and the final preparation of the material prior to placement. For example, glass ceramics are typically weaker materials which limits its use to single-unit restorations. On the other hand, zirconia has a high fracture toughness which enables multi-unit restorations. This material requires a long time sintering procedure which excludes its use for fast chair side production. Hybrid ceramic material developed for CAD/CAM system is contained improved nano ceramic elements. This new material, called a Resin Nano Hybrid Ceramic is unique in durability of function and aesthetic base compositions. The new nano-hybrid ceramic material is not a composite resin. It is also not a pure ceramic. The material is a mixture of both and consists of nano-ceramic fillers. Like a composite, the material is not brittle and is fracture resistant. Like a glass ceramic, the material has excellent polish retention for lasting esthetics. The material is easily machined by chair side or in a dental lab side, could be an useful restorative option.

  • In order to apply the properties of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) to support panel of polyurethane foam in LNG storage tank, we estimated the mechanical properties, degree of vapour barrier, chemical stability and thermal conductivity changes as ageing. According to the results, the mechanical strength (i.g. compressive strength, bending strength, tensile strength and shear strength) are more than 30 times higher than those of plywood. The FRP-polyurethane foam(PUF) composites have lower thermal conductivity changes as ageing than plywood-PUF composites. FRP-PUF sandwich composite for LNG storage tank with these remarkable properties are compared the abilities of these structures with those of the conventional structures(plywood-PUF sandwich composite). Finally, we can obtain the effects such as superior mechanical properties and fuel saving through improved ability of vapor barrier.

  • This investigation evaluated the fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) of eight currently available core materials, and relate the fracture toughness value to fractography analysis and surface characteristics using a atomic force microscope (AFM). Single-edge notched (SEN) test specimens (n=10) and compact tension (CT) test specimens (n=10) were prepared conforming to the ASTM Standard E-399 for a high copper amalgam, three composite core materials (Core-Max II, Core Paste, Bisfil Core), two reinforced composite core materials (Ti-Core, Ti-Core Natural), a resin-modified glass ionomer core material (Vitremer), and a conventional glass ionomer core material (Ketac-Molar). The specimens were tested with an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The maximum loads were measured to calculate the fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$). Thereafter, fracture surfaces of SEN specimens of each material were investigated for fractography analysis using scanning electron microscope. And, disc-shaped specimens with 1mm thickness were fabricated for each material and were investigated under AFM for surface morphology analysis. The results were as follows: 1. Bisfil Core showed the highest mean fracture toughness regardless of test methods. 2. For the tooth-colored materials, Ti-Core Natural exhibited the highest fracture toughness. 3. Ketac Molar showed a significantly low fracture toughness when compared with the amalgam and the composite resin core materials(p<0.05). 4. The fracture toughness values obtained with the single-edge notched test, except Ketac Molar, were higher than those obtained in the compact tension test. 5. SEM revealed that the fracture surface of high fracture toughness material was rougher than that of low fracture toughness material. 6. AFM revealed that the surface particles of the composite resins were smaller in size, with a lower surface roughness than the glass ionomer core materials.

  • This research work aims to develop an optimal design using Finite Element (FE) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) methods to replace the traditional concrete and timber material by a Synthetic Polyurethane fibre glass composite material in railway sleepers. The conventional timber railway sleeper technology is associated with several technical problems related to its durability and ability to resist cutting and abrading action of the bearing plate. The use of pre-stress concrete sleeper in railway industry has many disadvantages related to the concrete material behaviour to resist dynamic stress that may lead to a significant mechanical damage with feasible fissures and cracks. Scientific researchers have recently developed a new composite material such as Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyurethane (GFRP) foam to replace the conventional one. The mechanical properties of these materials are reliable enough to help solving structural problems such as durability, light weight, long life span (50-60 years), less water absorption, provide electric insulation, excellent resistance of fatigue and ability to recycle. This paper suggests appropriate sleeper design to reduce the volume of the material. The design optimization shows that the sleeper length is more sensitive to the loading type than the other parameters.

  • Glass-fiber reinforced polyester (GFRP) composite material is a promising alternative to existing construction materials such as steel, concrete and wood due to light weight and high durability of GFRP composite material. If a temporary arch bridge is built by GFRP composite deck, rapid construction of the bridge and reuse of the GFRP composite deck are possible. In this paper, we develop a type of temporary arch bridges that can be built by easy assembling of GFRP composite decks. For this purpose, several possible types of temporary arch bridges are suggested and verified by finite element analysis.

  • Cured-in-place-pipe(CIPP) is the most adopted trenchless application for sewer rehabilitation to extend the life of the existing sewer without compromising both direct construction and indirect social costs especially applied in the congested urban area. This technology is globally and domestically known to be the most suitable for partial and full deteriorated pipe structure rehabilitation in a sewer system. The typical design of CIPP requires a significant thickness of lining to support loading causing sewage flow interruption and increasing material cost. This paper presents development of a high strength glass fiber composite lining material for the CIPP application and structural test results. The test results exhibit that the new glass fiber composite lining material has 12 times of flexural strength, 6.2 times of flexural modulus, and 0.5 Creep Retention Factor. These test results can reduce lining design thickness 35% at minimum. Even though taking into consideration extra materials such as outer and inner films for actual field applications, the structural capacity of the composite material significantly increases and it reduces 20 percent or more line thickness as compared to the conventional CIPP. We expect that the newly developed CIPP lining material lowers material costs and minimizes flow capacity reduction, and fully replaceable to the conventional CIPP lining materials.
