  • In Top-Down construction for underground structures, the placement of slab as a horizontal supporting member against lateral earth pressure is an important process in determining construction time and cost. Usually, a reinforced concrete perimeter girder distributes concentrated lateral loads from earth retaining structures such as Cast-in-place (CIP) piles. By combining the function of the R/C perimeter girder and horizontal slabs, the Opened Slab Method is efficient for reducing construction time by elimination of time-consuming formwork for traditional perimeter girders. The structural performance of the method is also discussed in this paper.

  • A finite strip method is developed for fatigue reliability analysis of steel highway bridges. Flat shell strips are employed to model concrete slab and steel girders, while a connection strip is formed using penalty function method to take into account eccentricity of girder top flange. At each sampling point with given slab thickness and modulus ratio, a finite strip analysis of the bridge under fatigue truck is performed to calculate stress ranges at fatigue-prone detail, and fatigue failure probability is evaluated following the AASHTO approach or the LEFM approach. After the failure probability is integrated over all sampling points, fatigue reliability of the bridge is determined.

  • This study has focused on aerodynamics for a wind-resistance design about the single and tandem box girder sections to realize a super-long span bridge in the near future. Three-dimensional static analysis of flows around the fundamental single and tandem box girder sections with fairing is carried out by means of the IBTD/FS finite element technique with LES turbulence model. As the results of the analysis, computations have verified aerodynamic characteristics of both sections by the histories of aerodynamic forces, the separation and reattachment flow patterns and the surface pressure distributions. The relationship between the section shapes and the aerodynamic characteristics is also investigated in both sections. And the mechanism about the generation of fluctuating aerodynamic forces is discussed.

  • This study developed a new separated shperical bridge bearing that can be used for replacement of existing bridge bearings without crushing bearing-concrete. The separated spherical bearing have the upper and lower sole plate connected by bolts to the upper plate under bridge-girders and the lower plate on bearing-concrete. The targets of the separated spherical bearing are the maximum 3 mm of up-lifting height during replacement and the maximum required time of 30 minutes. Four separated spherical bearings are manufactured and replaced the existing bearings of a railway bridge in service and the replacing tests was performed. The number of the tests is two and the target of maximum 3 mm and 30 minutes was satisfied.

  • Intentionally weakened girders near the beam-to-colum connection lead ductile failures at the weakened points prior to potential brittle failure at the connection points subjected to strong earthquake. Recent research investigated cyclic behavior of composite beams with a rectangular web opening and find out ductile failure of such beams due to plastic hinge formation of T-section at the four corners of the rectangular opening. But eventual failures of T-sections are resulted from local buckling of T-section having a narrow stem and a narrow bound of plastic hinge formation. This continuing research proposes double-circular opening instead of rectangular one in ofter to improve energy dissipation capacity as well as composite beam strength, Experimental test of two specimens was carried out and its results are compared with those of nonlinear finite element analyses

  • An optimization algoriam for the optimum design of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder bridges is proposed in this paper. In order to optimize the tendon profile efficiently, a reduced basis technique is introduced. The optimization algorithm which includes the tendon profile, tendon size and concrete dimensions optimization problem of the PSC box girder bridges is verified on the Genetic algorikhm (GA) from the numerical examples. it may be positively stated that the optimum design of the PSC box girder bridges based on the new approach proposed in this study will lead to more rational and economical design compared with the currently available designs.

  • The most of the design engineers for construction has academic background of bachelors degree. Theories for advanced composite structures are too difficult for such engineers and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The senior author has reported that some laminate orientations have decreasing values of B$_{16}$, B$_{26}$, D$_{26}$, and D$_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. Such plates above behave as special orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the senior author[1, 3] can be used. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(M$_{x}$) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.ted.d.

  • Contrary to reinforced concrete frames, the beams or girders found in actual steel frames are neither hinged nor fixed at their ends. Instead, they are usually restrained by the columns to which they are attached. Here in this paper, common finite element program for plane frame stress analysis is improved by including the effect of partial fixities of the girder ends. To include the effect of partial fixities of the girder ends, Kim's modified slope-deflection equation is adopted. The stress analysis results obtained by this proposed method are then compared with Kim's example. Finally, method of choosing the most economic girder section for a multi-story frame is suggested through the examples.

  • Monitoring frequency change is a tool to indicate the change ill structural parameters. However, even critical reduction of stiffness is predicted in the range of indication errors due to the effect of temperature on the frequency change. In this study, an experimental work to examine the effect of various temperatures on modal characteristics of steel plate-girders is presented. A model plate-girder used for the experiment is described. Natural frequencies are monitored by using two different excitation sources-impact and shaker. The relation between measurement temperatures and natural frequencies are analyzed.
