  • This research covers the resting of precast/prestressed concrete I-Girder bridge. The research was designed to examine processes for improving the condition evaluation and rating of prestressed concrete bridge. To establish procedures that allow for the full utilization of prestressed concrete bridge capacity, a 28-year old sample was loaded to failure in site. The bridge was constructed with 12 spans, and girders of each span were simply supported. At each loading stage, the deflections, reinforcement strains, prestressing wire strains and concrete strains were examined. Failure behavior was analyzed, and failure load was also evaluated. The test results wee compared to the analytical results from the non-linear finite element analysis.

  • As the residential spaces become high-rised and high-density, Multi-story buildings were constructed with transfer girders, Deep beams, wall foundations, floor diaphragms an shear walls which may have column offsets. Especially, In the analysis and design of Multi-story buildings, the lateral loads must be taken into account. But, there have been no appropriate theory and national design code for predicting ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete Deep beams with web opening. Only empirical and semi-empirical formulas for predicting their ultimate load bearing capacities due to the complexities of the structural non-linearity and material heterogeneity. So this study analyze tow-dimensional finite element model that represents exactly the behavior of real structures with SBETA which are general nonlinear finite element analysis program, and compare the results with that from the real reinforced Concrete Deep beams with web opening tests. From the comparison, and parametric study, The Study presents the elementary data of the earthquake resistance for the reinforced concrete Deep beams with web opening.

  • The bridge is nation's principal structure and its influence for national economy is enormous. But it is essential for maintenance of deteriorated bridge because of the increased service life and the decreased performance. For the bridge reinforced by continuos slabs and post-tensioning, we evaluate th stress properties of girders and internal support. Results are almost coincidence between measured data in the field and analysed data by computer. We compared the effects by successive order of post- tensioning and order considered distribution of each girder's camber and stress. Bridge's camber and stress showed respectively symmetry and asymmetry shape by post tensioning order. For the effect of post-tensioning force partition, we divided the post-tensioning force into 3 types (100%, 20%, 30%), and the results show t도 difference of final stress and camber.

  • The use of high strength concrete in the fabrication and construction of prestressed concrete beam bridges can result in the increase of girder spacings for standard shapes, as well as the increase of span lengths. The increase of girder spacings corresponds to the reduction of the required number of girders. This study shows that the use of high strength concrete make prestressed concrete beam bridges the economical alternative to any other bridge types. Also, this study has the purpose of giving aids to design of prestressed concrete beam. To achieve this purpose this study provides the plots resulting from research on relationships between the concrete strength of prestressed concrete beam, girder spacing and the number of strands in various span lengths.

  • An analytical method to predict the flexural behavior of composite girder is presented in which the early-age properties of concrete are specified including maturing of elastic modulus, creep and shrinkage. The time dependent constitutive relation accounting for the early-age concrete properties is derived in an incremental format by expanding the total form of stress-strain relation by the first order Taylor series with respect to the reference time. The sectional analysis calculates the axial and curvature strains based on the force and moment equilibriums. The deflection curve of the box girder approximated by the quadratic polynomial function is calculated by applying to the proper boundary conditions in the consecutive segments. Numerical applications are made for the 3-span double composite steel box girders which is a composite bridge girder filled with concrete at the bottom of the steel box in the negative moment region. The one dimensional finite element analysis results are compared with those of the three dimensional finite element analysis and the analytical method based on the sectional analysis. Close agreement is observed among the three methods.

The time dependent constitutive relation accounting for the early-age concrete properties is derived in an incremental format by expanding the total form of stress-strain relation by the first order Taylor series with respect to the reference time. The total potential energy of the flexural composite member is minimized to derive the time dependent finite element equilibrium equation. Numerical applications are made for the 3-span double composite steel box girders which is a composite bridge girder filled with concrete at the bottom of the steel box in the negative moment region. The numerical analysis with considering the variation of concrete elastic modulus are performed to investigate the effect of it on the early-age behavior of composite structures. The one dimensional finite element analysis results are compared with the analytical method based on the sectional analysis. Close agreement is observed among the two methods.

  • In this study, an flexural test on half-scale spliced PSC-I girder was conducted to verify the efficiency of the long span spliced girder as suggested by the Korean Highway Design Specification. The experimental results showed that the specimens developed a complex failure mode due to flexural-compression and torsional stress. The cracking moment of each girder was higher the experiment than was calulated by the ACI and the ultimate strength were the almost same. To estimate the safety and the structural efficiency of the spliced girder, the proposed Yielding Resistance Index(YRI) and ductility index by American Concrete Institutes were used based on the energy concept. The proposed YRI defined the ratio of crack resisting energy and the total energy calculated from load-displacement relationship. Based on the analysis of YRI and ductility index, the flexural behavior of the spliced girder was found to be efficient. Through the experimental results, the structural behavior of proposed spliced PSC I-type girder for long span bridge was found to be more efficient than the exsisting PSC I-type girders.

  • The truss bridge is composed of numerous steel beams. In long span bridges the size of beams is getting larger, so the number of plate girders is increasing instead of rolled beams. This plate girder has long welding lines at the intersection of steel plates. The improper welding at the intersection line causes the steel bridge to be structurally unsafe. In this paper the loss of member section from improper welding was measured and the experimental testing was performed to get the S-N curve from testing models with sectional losses. The improper welding resulted in the lowering of structural safety and the shortening of life cycle.

  • In this paper a study about concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers is presented. Lattice cantilevers are partial structures composed of deck, arch, piers and provisional steel diagonals, organized as reticular cantilever girders, in order to build arch bridges without the use of centrings, supports or temporary towers. Characteristics of this construction methodology with its variants are explained together with their implications in the erection sequence. Partial elastic scheme method is implemented in order to find initial forces of temporary cables and a forward analysis is carried out to follow the actual sequence of construction, by extending a procedure already applied to concrete cable-stayed bridges and to arches built by the classical suspended cantilever method. A numerical application on a case-study of a concrete arch bridge is performed together with a comparison between different methodologies followed for its construction sequence. Differences between erection by lattice cantilevers and cable-stayed cantilevers, are discussed. Results can be useful for designers in conceptual design of concrete arch bridges.

  • In this paper we deal with stability problems of any complex structure that can be modeled by beam and shell finite elements. We use for illustration the steel plate girders, which are used in bridge construction, and in industrial halls or building construction. Long spans, slender cross sections exposed to heavy loads, are all critical design points engineers must take into account. Knowing the critical load that will cause lateral torsional buckling of the girder, or load that can lead to web buckling, as an important scenario to consider in a design process. Many of such problem, including lateral torsional buckling with influence of lateral supports and their spacing on critical load can be solved by the proposed method. An illustrative study of web buckling also includes effects of position and spacing of transverse and longitudinal web stiffeners, where stiffeners can be modelled optionally using shell or frame elements.
