We screened the methanol extracts from 133 plant species growing in Korea for antimicrobial activity against enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli 0157 : H7. Those are selected from three plant grouping ; traditional medicinal herbs, edible plants, and flowers. They were tested by disk diffusion assay. From evaluation of the inhibition zone diameter of microbial growth, we found that the flower extract of Rhododendron Schilpenbachii Max had the most significant antimicrobial activity against this bacteria. Extracts from most of the vegetables and plants did not show antimicrobial activity except for the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. and seeds of Prunus Dallicina L. did not show antimicrobial activity except for the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. and the seeds of Prunus sallicina L.
This experiment was conducted to detect the presence of allelopathic substances in the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. Water extracts from G. biloba leaves which collected at different season markedly inhibited the germination and growth of O. sativa, E. crus-galli, D. sanguinalis, and L. sativa, indicating the presence of biological substances. Linolenic and palmitic acid were the major fatty acids of G. biloba leaves. The biochemical substances such as salicylic arid, p-coumaric acid, catechol, hydroquinone, orchinol, ferulic acid, phloroglucinol, and umbelliferone etc., belonging to the phenolic, compounds were, detected in a large amount, which may be responsible for exhibition inhibitory effects. The common phenolic compounds were detected in the early-harvested and late-harvested G. biloba leaves were salicylic and p-coumaric acid. All these compounds were related to the allelopathic activities in G. biloba leaves.

In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect on melanin synthesis of Ginkgo biloba seed oil. The results showed 9.96% inhibitory effect scavenging activity on DPPH and showed a value of 1.33 mM of $FeSO_4$ at a concentration of 0.06% in DMSO by using FRAP assay. G. biloba seed oil inhibited tyrosinase activity up tp 37.72% and suppressed the biosynthesis melanin up to 48.02% at 0.06% in B16/F10 mouse melanoma cell. In G. biloba seed oil treated group tyrosinase, TRP-1, TRP-2 and MITF gen expression levels significantly decreased compared to the contral group at a concentration of 0.04% and 0.06%. In conclusion, these results indicated that G. biloba seed oil extract have a good antimelanogenetic effects.

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.) seeds, called 'Baekqwa', were extracted from 70% ethanol to investigate the whitening effect and to confirm the application potential as a cosmetic material. Ginkgo seed ethanol extracts (GBE) were treated with B16F10 melanoma cells, and melanin contents and tyrosinase, which is the main enzyme concerning the synthesis process of melanin, inhibitory activity were confirmed. As a result, there were inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner, and GBE also significantly reduced the protein expression and mRNA levels of tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1, -2 (TRP-1, -2), and their upstream transcription factor, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF). These results suggest that GBE could be used as an effective whitening agent that has an inhibitory effect on melanin production by regulating the expression and degradation of MITF in melanocytes.
The textile remains have been affected largely by environmental factors including microorganisms because they were composed of organic compounds to be easy to damage. So, we selected 8 strains of the 131 isolated strains from museum environments and textile remains by high pretense activity, and identified them for measuring the antibacterial activity of Gingko biloba extracts. They were identified Genus Arthrobacter spp. 3 strains (Arthrobacter nicotiannae A12, Arthrobacter sp B12, Arthrobacter oxidans B13), Cenus Bacillus spp. 2 strains (Bacillus licheniformis D9, Bacillus cereus D33), Genus Pseudomonas spp. 2 strains (Pseudomonas putida A24, Pseufomonas fluorescene C21) and a Genus Staphylococcus sp. 1 strain (Staphylococcus pasteuri D3) as closest strains through the blast search of NCBI. Though antibacterial activity of the extracts of Gingko biloba leaves as MIC was lower than that of other pharmaceutical antibiotics. However the extracts was crude extracts, the extracts might have good antibacterial against most of the isolates from museum. Especially, the antifungal activity of Gingko biloba is known previously, the extracts of Gingko biloba leaves has possibility of usage as a good natural material for conservation of remains.
This study was carried out to establish an in vitro culture method of callus having a high antioxidant activity from Ginkgo biloba L. Leaf explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with various growth regulators. The explants were incubated in the dark or 3,000 lux cool-white light. Methanol extracts from incubated callus were evaluated for scavenging activity of the free radicals using DPPH. The best callus growth rate was achieved in MS medium combined with 10 ${\mu}M$ NAA and 5 ${\mu}M$ kinetin in the light condition. Total antioxidant activity of cell aggregates in suspension culture [MS medium supplemented with 10 ${\mu}M$ NAA in the light] was up to 80% of ascorbic acid. By means of HPLC analysis, quantification of the quercetin dehydrate and keamperol profiles from suspension callus was compared. Contents of quercetin dehydrate and keamperol from leaf extracts were 0.07 and 2.24 ${\mu}g/20{\mu}l$, and those from callus 0.56 and 0.18 ${\mu}g/20{\mu}l$, respectively.

Methanol extracts of domestic plants of Korea were evaluated as a potential inhibitor of neutral pH optimum and membrane-associated 60 kDa sphingomyelinase (N-SMase) activity. In this study, we partially purified N-SMase from bovine brain membranes using ammonium sulfate. It was purified approximately 163-fold by the sequential use of DE52, Butyl-Toyopearl, DEAE-Cellulose, and Phenyl-5PW column chromatographies. The purified N-SMase activity was assayed in the presence of the plant extracts of three hundreds species. Based on the in vitro assay, three plant extracts significantly inhibited the N-SMase activity in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. To further examine the inhibitory pattern, a Dixon plot was constructed for each of the plant extracts. The extracts of Abies nephrolepis, Acer tegmentosum, and Ginkgo biloba revealed a competitive inhibition with the inhibition constant (Ki) of $11.9 {\mu}g/mL,\;9.4{\mu}g/mL,\;and\;12.9{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. These extracts also inhibited in a dose-dependent manner the production of ceramide induced by serum deprivation in human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y.
Ultraviolet(UV) radiation causes a variety of biological effects on the skin, including inflammation, pigmentation, photoaging and cancer. Free radicals are involved in inflammatory skin reactions induced by UVB radiation. In this study, we investigated the effects of antioxidants(Tea, Korean red ginseng, Ginkgo biloba extract) on UVB-induced skin damage. Tea, KRG and EGb 761 were topically treated to dorsal skin of ICR mouse. The mice were also treated soon after IMED ($1.4KJ/m^{2}$) of UVB irradiation. Skin pigmentation of irradiated mouse was observed by a chromameter after 2 weeks. Topical application of Tea, KRG and EGb 761 for 2 weeks decreased skin pigmentation compared to DVB control group(p<.05). Tea, KRG and EGb 761 also reduced UVB-induced infiltration of inflammatory cells. These results showed that Tea, KRG and EGb 761 as a topical application may have preventive effect against UVB-induced skin damage.
The herbal extract (YMT_02) is a modified herbal extracts from Yukmijihwangtang (YMJ) to promote memory-enhancing. The YMJ extracts has been widely used as an anti-aging herbal medicine for hundred years in Asian countries. The purpose of this study is to; 1) quantitatively evaluate the memory-enhancing effect of YMT_02 by hehavior task, 2) identify candidate genes responsible for enhancing memory by cDNA microarray and 3) assess the anti-oxidant effect of YMT_02 on PC12 cell. Memory retention abilities are addressed by passive avoidance task with Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rat. Before the training session, the rats are subdivided into four groups and administrated with YMT_02, Ginkgo biloba, Soya lecithin and normal saline for 10 days. The retention test was performed. 24 hours after the training session. The retention time of the YMT_02 group was significantly (p<0.05) delayed $({\sim}100%)$, whereas Ginkgo biloba and Soya lecithin treatment delayed 20% and 10% respectively. The hippocampi of YMT_02 and control group were dissected and mRNA was further purified. After synthesizing cDNA using oligo-dT primer, the cDNA were applied and mRNA was further purified. After synthesizing cDNA using oligo-dT primer, the cDNA were applied to Incyte rat GEMTM 2 cDNA microarray. The microarray results show that prealbumin(transthyretin), phosphotidy lethanolamine N-methyltransferase, and PEP-19 are expressed abundantly in the YMT_02 treated group. Especially, PEP-19 is a neuron-specific protein, which inhibits apoptotic processes in neuronal cell. On the other hand, transcripts of RAB15, glutamate receptor subunit 2 and CDK 108 are abundant in control group. Besides, neuronal genes involved in neuronal death or neurodegeneration such as neuronal-pentraxin and spectrin are abundantly expressed in control group. Additionally, the YMT_02 shows an anti oxidative effect in the PC12 cell. The list of differentially expressed genes may implicate further insight on the action and mechanism behind the memory-enhancing effect of herbal extracts YMT_02, for example, anti-apoptotic, anti-oxidative, and neuroprotective effects.
Acaricide effect against Tetranichus urticae, Myzus persica, Spodoptera litura and Plutella xylostella with the Ginkgo biloba leaves extracts was reviewed. This result was motality 74.3%, 88.7% respectively, after tretment 24hr, 72hr about $80^{\circ}C$ water extract(GLW80, 1%) of Tetranichus urticae and the insecticide took effect showed its effect in some 50% against the other three. But, motality of Tetranichus urticae against 10% GLW80 showed its 90.6%, 98.3% after tretment 24hr and 48hr.
