  • In this paper, impulse response of giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) is identified by using M-transform. First, the displacement of GMM was measured by using the dual frequency laser interferometer. The noise included in the measured signal was removed by using M-transform. The impulse response of the GMM was identified from the input current of the driving coil and the displacement.

  • Terfenol-D is one of several magnetostrictive materials with property of converting energy into mechanical motion, and vice versa. Magnetostriction is the property that causes certain ferromagnetic materials to change shape in a magnetic field. Terfenol-D is said to produce giant magnetostriction, strain greater than any other commercially available smart material. In this paper, fundamental characteristics analysis of giant magnetostrictive materials(Terfenol-D) has been investigated. The magnetic field analysis is carried out by using finite element method simulation ANSYS. The results show 223N in force and 9.5T in maximum magnetic flux density and 7.56 $10^6A/m$ in maximum magnetic field intensity 1A current. Through the analysis, basic data of Terfenol-D for the application of mechanical system are obtained.

  • The paper provides a comprehensive procedure for the mechanical and magnetic design of Langevin transducer based on giant magnetostrictive material. The the transducer is designed to work at its second mode of vibration, having high mechanical quality factor and low damping coefficient. The design procedure is based on an analytical model and it is verified by finite-element analysis. Experimental tests based on impedance response analysis in first and second modes are carried out on the prototype. Results confirm the appropriate design of this transducer, demonstrating the highest mechanical quality factor between the resonant transducers in the literature.

  • Magnetic field in magnetic bearings is the physical medium to realize magnetic levitation, the distribution of the magnetic field determines the operating performance of magnetic bearings. In this paper, a thin-slice Fiber Bragg Grating-Giant Magnetostrictive Material magnetic sensor used for the air gap of magnetic bearings was proposed and tested in the condition of dynamic magnetic field. The static property of the sensor was calibrated and a polynomial curve was fitted to describe the performance of the sensor. Measurement of dynamic magnetic field with different frequencies in magnetic bearings was implemented. Comparing with the finite element simulations, the results showed the DC component of the magnetic field was detected by the sensor and error was less than 5.87%.

  • For the next generation railway brake system, a disc brake which can be operated directly and electrically is strongly expected. This paper deals with newly developed disc brake actuator using giant magnetostrictive materials(GMM) which can be integrated with disc brake. Regarding the brake system performance, a better delay time was also attained which can be integrated with disc brake. Regarding the brake system performance, a better delay time was also attained which will contribute to shorten a stopping distance.

  • It is shown that progressive crystallization of non-magnetostrictive Co-based metallic glass (VITROVAC 6030) leads to an increase of coercivity by more than three orders of magnitude. The mechani는 responsible for this phenomenon are interpreted showing that the main source for the giant increase of the coercivity is the pinning effect on the domain walls originating from the created crystallites of the size much smaller than the domain width (correlation length for ferromagnetic exchange interactions). It is also shown that gradually devitrified non-magnetostrictive metallic glass is an excellent model material for verification of N el's theory describing the Rayleigh rule.
