We report the distance modulus of nearby dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 147 estimated from the Tip of Red-giant Branch (TRGB) method applying to the color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions in the near-infrared JHK bands. Apparent magnitudes of TRGBs in each band are obtained by applying Savitzky-Golay filter to the luminosity functions, and the theoretical absolute magnitudes are estimated from Yonsei-Yale isochrones. The derived values of distance modulus to NGC 147 are $(m-M)=23.69{\pm}0.12,\;23.78{\pm}0.17,\;and\;23.85{\pm}0.22\;for\;J,\;H,\;and\;K$ bands, respectively. Distance modulus in bolometric magnitude is also derived as $(m-M)=23.87{\pm}0.11$. We compare the derived values of the TRGB distance modulus to NGC 147 in the near-infrared bands with the previous results in other bands.
A large scatter of the chemical abundances among globular cluster red giants has been observed. Especially the chemical elements C, N, O, Na, Mg, and Al vary form star to star within globular clusters. Except for $\omega$ Cen and M22, most globular clusters could be considered to be monometallic of their iron peak elements within error ranges. The variations in light elements among globuar cluster giants appear much more pronounced than in field halo giants of comparable Fe-peak metallicity. It has been found that in general the nitrogen abundance is anticorrelated with both carbon and oxygen, while it is correlated with Na and AI. These intracluster abundance inhomogeneities can be interpreted either by mixing of nucleosythesized material from the deep stellar interior during the red giant branch phase of evolution or by inhomogeneities of primordially processed material, from which the stars were formed. The simple way of distingushing between two senarios is to obtain the element abundances of main-sequence stars in globular clusters, which are too faint for high resolution spectroscopic studies until now. Both 'evolutionary' and 'primodial' origins are accepted for explanations of abundance variations among red giants and CN-CH anticorrelations among main-sequence stars in globular clusters. This paper reviews chemical abundances of light elements among globular cluster giants, with brief reviews of cannonical stellar evolution of low mass stars after main-sequence and deep mixing for abundance variations of cluster giants, and a possible connection between deep mixing and second parameter.
We present UBV I photometry of the old open cluster NGC 1193. Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of this cluster show a well defined main sequence and a sparse red giant branch. For the inner region of r < 50", three blue straggler candidates are newly found in addition to the objects Kaluzny (1988) already found. The color-color diagrams show that the reddening value toward NGC 1193 is E(B - V ) = $0.19{\pm}0.04$. From the ultraviolet excess measurement, we derived the metallicity to be [Fe/H]= $-0.45{\pm}0.12$. A distance modulus of ${(m\;-\;M)}_0$ = $13.3{\pm}0.15$ is obtained from zero age main sequence fitting with the empirically calibrated Hyades isochrone of Pinsonneault et al. (2004). CMD comparison with the Padova isochrones by Bertelli et al. (1994) gives an age of log t = $9.7{\pm}0.1$.
Ultra faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are larger but fainter than globular clusters, being the faintest galaxies in the universe. They have been found only in the Local Group. We report the discovery of an UFD in the intracluster field of the Virgo cluster (Virgo UFD1). It is located near the core of Virgo cluster, and far from any massive galaxies. The color magnitude diagram of resolved stars in Virgo UFD1 shows narrow, metal poor red giant branch (RGB), which is very similar to the UFDs in the Local Group. by comparing RGB in this galaxy with 12 Gyr stellar isochrones, we estimate its distance, $d=16.4{\pm}0.4$ Mpc and mean metallicity, $[Fe/H]=-2.4{\pm}0.4$. We derive its integrated photometric properties and structural parameters : V-band absolute magnitude of $MV=-6.3{\pm}0.2$, effective radius of $84{\pm}7pc$, and central surface brightness of ${\mu}V,0=26.49{\pm}0.09$ mag arcsec-2. These properties are similar to these of Local Group UFDs. Virgo UFD1 is the first UFD discovered beyond the Local Group. These results indicate that it may be a fossil remnant of the first galaxies.
M74 is a nearby face-on spiral galaxy that hosts three core-collapse supernovae (SNe) : SN Ic 2002ap, SN II-P 2003gd, and SN II-P 2013ej. Therefore it is an ideal target to investigate the properties of the core-collapse SNe and to improve the calibration of Type II-P SNe as a standardizable candle. However, its distance is not well known. We present a new distance estimate to M74 based on the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). From the photometry of archival F555W and F814W images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, we derive the TRGB to be at $ITRGB=26.13{\pm}0.02$ and the distance modulus to be $30.04{\pm}0.04$ (random) ${\pm}0.12$ (systematic) (corresponding to a linear distance, $10.19{\pm}0.14{\pm}0.56Mpc$). With this result, we calibrate the standardized candle method of SNe II-P. From the absolute magnitude of SN 2003gd corrected for its expansion velocity and reddening, we derive the value of the Hubble constant, $H0=72{\pm}6{\pm}7km\;s-1\;Mpc-1$. It is in agreement with the uncertainty with the recent estimates based on the luminosity calibration of Type Ia SNe.

We have estimated a metallicity map of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey (MCPS) and Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE III) photometric data. This is a first of its kind, high-spatial resolution map of metallicity up to a radius of $4^{\circ}-5^{\circ}$, derived using large area photometric data and calibrated using spectroscopic data of Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars. The RGB is identified in the V, (V - I) colour- magnitude diagrams of small subregions of varying sizes in both data sets. The slope of the RGB is used as an indicator of the mean metallicity of a subregion, and it is calibrated to metallicity using spectroscopic data for field and cluster red giants in selected subregions. The mean metallicity of the LMC is found to be [Fe/H] = -0.37 dex (${\sigma}[Fe/H]=0.12$) from MCPS data, and [Fe/H] = -0.39 dex (${\sigma}[Fe/H]=0.10$) from OGLE III data. The bar is found to have an uniform and higher metallicity compared to the disk, and is indicative of an active bar in the past. Both the data sets suggest a shallow radial metallicity gradient up to a radius of 4 kpc ($-0.049{\pm}0.002$ dex kpc-1 to $-0.066{\pm}0.006$ dex kpc-1). This metallicity gradient of the LMC disk, though shallow, resembles the gradient seen in spiral galaxies, and similar to that found in our Galaxy.
The presence of multiple stellar populations is now well established in most globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way. The origin of this phenomenon, however, is yet to be understood. In this respect, the study of NGC 2808, an intriguing GC which hosts subpopulations with extreme helium abundances, would help to resolve this problem. In order to investigate chemical abundance patterns among different subpopulations in this GC, we have performed low-resolution spectroscopy for the red-giant-branch (RGB) stars and measured CN & CH bands, and Ca line strength. We have identified at least three subpopulations from the CN abundance distribution. This GC shows CN-CH anti-correlation following the general trend among "normal" GCs. In addition, we have cross-matched our results with the high-resolution data in literature, and found a tight correlation between CN strength and sodium abundance. However, CN is anticorrelated with oxygen abundance, as expected from the well known N(&Na)-O anticorrelation. In this talk, we will discuss the implication of these results.
We present a study of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) contribution to the total Ks band luminosity of star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as a function of age. AGB stars, a representative intermediate-age population, are a strong source of NIR to MIR emission so that they are a critical component for understanding the near-to-mid infrared observation of galaxies. Current calibration of IR emission in evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) models for galaxies is mainly based on a small number of LMC star clusters. However, each LMC star cluster with intermediate age contains only a few AGB stars so that it suffers from a stochastic effect. Therefore a large number of them are needed for solid calibration of the EPS models. We study physical properties of a large number of LMC star clusters to estimate the Ks band luminosity fraction of AGB stars in star clusters as a function of age. We discuss the stochastic effect in calibrating models, and the importance of this calibration for studying the evolution of not only nearby galaxies but also of high-z galaxies.
Recently it is found that the globular clusters are not only bound in their host galaxies, but also are wandering between galaxies in Virgo and Coma clusters. The cluster-wide distribution of these intracluster globular clusters (IGCs) suggests that IGCs are an important probe to understand hierarchical structure formation. We present a survey of IGCs in Virgo cluster using HST archive images for four HST/ACS fields located from about 9 arcmin to 40 acrmin from the cluster center. We find ten new IGCs and confirm four previously known IGCs. The number density of IGCs decreases as the distance from the cluster center increases. We derive integrated photometry of IGCs. We also obtain photometry of resolved stars in the outer region of each cluster. These IGCs are fainter than $M_V{\approx}-9.5$ and mostly blue in (V-I) color. showing that they are mostly metal poor. The locations of red giant branch stars of IGCs in color-magnitude diagrams also show that they are meal-poor. We discuss the implications of these results.

Blue stragglers (BSs) are the objects that are brighter and bluer than the stars at main-sequence turn-off point. In this study, we present the Ca-by and VI photometry for Galactic dwarf spheroidal galaxies using Subaru/Suprime-Cam and investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of BS stars using the hk index as a photometric metallicity indicator. We compare the cumulative radial distribution of the BS stars with those of two groups of red-giant-branch (RGB) stars divided by the hk-index strength, and find that the spatial distribution of all BS stars is closer to that of hk-weak (i.e. metal-poor) RGB stars. We also find that the hk-strong BS stars are more centrally concentrated than the hk-weak ones. We will discuss the use of hk-index as a metallicity indicator for the hot BS stars and suggest possible explanations for the results in terms of the origin of BS stars in the dwarf gal.
