폐열회수 발전을 위한 지로터 팽창기 설계 및 성능해석 (Design and performance analysis of a gerotor expander for power generation from waste heat)

  • In this paper, the feasibility study on a gerotor type expander as a power converting device in a small scale power generation ORC system was made by performance analysis of the gerotor expander. Design of a 1kW-class gerotor expander was carried out and its performance was numerically simulated. For a R134a Rankine system with about 20 kW solar heat source, the gerotor expander efficiency was calculated to be 35~75% for the operating conditions of $Te=80{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ and $Tc=30{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. Maximum expander efficiency was obtained at an expansion ratio somewhat higher than the design expansion ratio due to pre-expansion during suction process inside the outer and inner rotor mate. If the operating expansion ratio is not far from the design expansion ratio, the gerotor expander performance can be well compared to that of a scroll type.

  • A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has a high discharge per cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used as lubrication oil of engines and the hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, it has been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor design. In this study, to obtain an optimal gerotor with an ellipse-elliptical involute-ellipse combined lobe shape, an automatic program was developed for calculating performance parameters and drawing a gerotor profile. An oil pump was assembled with the optimal gerotor together with the port used at the actual field and CFD analysis was performed on this assembly using Ansys-CFX. A performance test for the oil pump was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from the theoretical analysis and the CFD analysis.

  • The analytical design method of gerotor profile, based on an envelope of a family of curves, is proposed. Analysis to calculate the flow rate and the torque capacity of a gerotor set are presented. The influence of the circular tooth radius and the amount of eccentricity on the configuration of a gerotor has been explored in this paper. The variation of the inlet volume and the fluctuation of the generated torque are also analyzed.

  • When designing a gerotor, designers determine basic dimensions of a gerotor with transmitted power considering strength, interference and so. on. But, designers can not easily obtain the tooth profile generated by dimensions as well as the geometry bob for cutting the tooth profile. In order to resolve these problems, an automatic design sys-tem creating not only the solid model of a gerotor but also that of the generating hob using the design parameters of dimen-sions is developed. Through the developed system, designers can improve the efficiency of design and satisfy the variable requirements of design as well. In this research, the three-dimensional solid models for gerotors are generated considering the design parameters. Besides, those for generating hob regarding the design parameters of hob is created automatically.

핀치형 내부로터의 제로터 설계 (Design of Gerotor with Pin-tooth Inner Rotor)

  • In the conventional gerotor design, the circular arc tooth of the outer rotor is first introduced, and then the inner rotor profile is generated by simulating the outer rotor motion while the inner rotor is fixed. The profile generation of tooth meshing exhibits relativity; therefore, the outer rotor profile can be generated by the movement of the inner rotor. In this study, we propose the design of a gerotor with a pin-tooth inner rotor. First, the pin-tooth inner rotor is devised, and then the outer rotor profile is generated. The profile of the inner rotor is simply composed of equally arranged pins along a circle. The root of the inner rotor is designed as a conjugated arc of two pins. The trajectory of the pin center is obtained by the inner rotor operation, and then the outer rotor profile is determined as a parallel curve of the trajectory. In this gerotor design, the inner rotor has a simple configuration, and contact occurs between the pin parts of the inner rotor and the whole profile of the outer rotor. This affects the material selection and machining process. The pin tooth can be used to design the outer and inner rotors, enabling a double gerotor mechanism corresponding to a planetary gear system.

  • A gerotor pump is suitable for oil hydraulics of machine tools, automotive engines, compressors, constructions and other various applications, which are highly accepted by designers. Especially the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubricant oil. However, related industries do not have necessary technology to design and optimize the pump and paid royalties of rotor profile on an advanced country. Also, gerotor pumps with unsettled design parameters have not been sufficiently analyzed from a theoretical view of design. Therefore, it is still very difficult for the pump designer and manufacturer to decide the specifications for the required gerotor pump by users. In this study, the design optimization has been carried out to determine the design parameters that maximize the specific flow rate and minimize the flow rate irregularity. Theoretical analyses and optimal design of the gerotor oil pump have been performed by mathematical base, numerical method and knowledge of kinematics. An automated design system of the tooth profile has been developed through Auto LISP language and CAD method considering various design parameters. Finally, an optimally designed model for a general type of a gerotor pump has been generated and experimentally verified for the pump performances.

  • The objective of this study was to examine whether a gerotor pump used in a transmission could be converted into an electric vehicle thermal management system pump using a virtual design environment. To achieve this objective, we first built an environment that could analyze the performance of a gerotor pump in heat transfer fluid. Flow rate, pressure, and volumetric efficiency were then analyzed when using heat transfer fluid in a gerotor pump. Finally, how large the displacement volume of the pump should be designed when using a heat transfer fluid other than oil was determined. Based on results of this study, it is expected that gerotor pumps will be applied to new business fields such as electric vehicle cooling systems.

  • A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has high discharge per 1 cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used for lubrication oil of engines and as a hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction have recently come to the fore. It has also been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor and port shape design. In this study, to develop an optimal gerotor with a new lobe shape, 2-ellipses-combined, the equation of the lobe shape was derived, and CFD analysis results were compared for 2-ellipses with those of the previous gerotors (3-ellipses and ellipse1-involuteellipse2). A performance test for the oil pump with the optimal rotor (2-ellipses) was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from CFD analysis.

  • A disadvantage in the design of gerotor pump is a lack of parts that can be adjusted to compensate for wear in the rotor set, and as a consequence, it causes a sharp reduction of efficiency. In this paper, an attempt has been made to reduce the wear rate between the rotors of a gerotor pump. To do this, floating genetic algorithm (FGA) is used as an optimization technique for minimizing the wear rate proportional factor (WRPF). The result shows that the wear rate can be reduced considerably, e.g. approximately 8% in this paper, throughout the optimization using FGA.
