  • Dongmag beach area contains diverse geological and geomorphological outcrops which can be used for geotourism purposes. They are as follows; headland with granodiorite with plenty of enclaves and sandy beach, which is fed from Manisan with well-developed sheeting joints composed of granite and granodiorite. Weathered material from the hillside feedsthe one and only sandy beach in Ganghwado Island. Weathered outcrop at the hillside behind beach exposes typical spherical weathering also. Bunori Dondae Fort which was built on top of sea cliff with granodiorite has plenty of history and cultural values commands an extraordinary view of tidal flats and coastal landforms. This geosite with high geodiversity can be used for interpreters who provide balanced views of nature conservation.

  • In Korea, it is significantly deficient in the study about tourism geology, which is a new branch of applied geology that would support the growth of ecotourism world-wide. The objectives of this study include (1) the promotion in geodiversity of tourism geology using the data for type and distribution patterns of geological and geomorphological landscape resources and (2) the redoubling of diversity in the environmental interpretation programs offered by the Korea National Parks Service (KNPS). Our field study discovered 212 geological and geomorphological landscape resources distributed in the area of Taean seashore national park. Coastal topography is the most discovered type followed by weathering topography. It is our belief that the aforementioned resources can be utilized as a tourism geological site in assisting the public to understand geological science and to draw their attention and interests after sorting and filtering it out through discussions with geologists and geomorphologists of a consortium. Furthermore, in order to promote the activation of developing user-oriented geotourism sites, it is recommended to keep monitoring on demographical characteristics of geotourists, behavioral characteristics of geotouconrists within the geotourism site and ducting analysis for developing geotourism program and events. And, the research support of geological engineering dealing with the estimation of weathering degree and the development of conservation techniques for the object of geotourism along with the research of environmental science aspects will improve the activation of tourism geology.

  • In Korea, it is reported that the study about tourism geology, which is a new branch af applied geology that would support the growth of ecotourism world-wide, is significantly deficient. The objectives of this study include (1) the promotion in geodiversity of tourism geology using the data for type and distribution patterns of geological and geomorphological landscapes resources, and (2) the redoubling of diversity in environmental interpretation programs offerend by National Parks Authority (NPA). According to this research results, 62 geological and geomorphological landscape resources in Naejangsan national park were observed. Weathering topography is the most discovered type followed by river, mountain and tectonic topography in decreasing order. It is thought that the above-mentioned data can be utilized to sort and filter by the discussion through consortium organized by geologist and geomorphologist. Furthermore, in order to promote the activation of developing user-oriented geotourism sites, the monitoring on demographical characteristics of geotourists, behaviora characteristics of geotourists within geotourism site, and the analysis for developing geotourism program and events should be accompanied. And, the support of geological engineering dealing the estimation of weathering degree and development of conservation techniques for the object of geotourism will improve the activation of tourism geology.

  • Geoheritage is designated to preserve geodiversity of geological and geomorphological cases. Geotourism is an extensive activity that aims at the understanding of geology and earth's history for the geoheritage and for developing regions through preserving the geodiveristy of geoheritage. Igidae-Oryukdo is geosite of Busan National Geopark and its visitors are expected to grow rapidly. Accordingly, for the effective use of the geosites, The development and application of geotourism is required. This study suggests that tuffacious sedimentary rocks, hornblende megacrysts-bearing dike, copper mine, marine potholes should designated as the central points for advanced learning stage; volcanic breccia, sea caves, sea cliffs, wavecut platform, tor and islands as the central points for basic learning stage. Based on this central points, this study established concepts for getourism in this study area at basic and expert level for individual and family tourists, and also small or large groups such as school students.

  • This paper was made on the basis of geotourism to explain morphological characteristics of Patagonia and Atacama region in the Andes through 10-day fieldwork. The Patagonian landscape was focused on the Torres del Paine National Park, Chile and the Los Glacier National Park, Argentina; on the other hand, the Atacama morphological landscape was investigated around the San Pedro de Atacama. Many geomorphological features such as uplift, semiarid and glacier landscapes can be found in Patagonia, so it is strongly recommended to have an opportunity to enjoy these landforms by geotourism. Massive intrusive rock bodies of granite can be shown in those two National Parks declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. And, the Atacama Desert located on the forearc depression in the Andes, Chile has also many geomorphological destinations of arid and volcanic landforms; badland, pediplain, pediment, salt lake and geyser. Especially, huge pediplain is one of the greatest view points in the Atacama Desert. Patagonia and Atacama are the best geographical tourism sites to know diverse tectonic landforms made by the conflict between South American and Pacific plates.

  • Last review papers on Korean geomorphology and physical geography had been published in 1997 and 2000 respectively. A proposal to publish a book on Korean geomorphologists' achievement resulted in series of review papers in Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association. This article aims to summarize these papers and introduce their findings to foreign scholars. On remarkable achievement is a fierce debate on the effectiveness of traditional mountain concept to explain the shape of Korean peninsula, which made the public's understanding of geomorphology widen to the general public. Reflecting public demands, concerns for the effects of coastal facilities on coastal erosion and conservation mind and scientific researches for the coastal sand dunes have increased so much. Geomorphological hazards such as debris flow attracted many concerned scientists, and geotourism-related papers in scientific journals increased thanks to the designation of first geopark in Korea. Research papers submitted to the famous foreign academic journals are increasing in numbers these days.

  • This study is to explore geosites considering the geological characteristics in Gochang-gun and to investigate a possibility of being designated as the national geopark of Korea. In this study, the geosites within Gochang-gun are explored through literature search and field work. The results indicate that seven of the geosites in the Seonunsan area are relevant as potential national geopark, including Jinheunggul, Dosolam Maebulsang, Youngmungul, Nakjodae and Cheonmabong, Byungbawi, spherulitic rhyolite, and Dolmen site. In addition, there are other areas that have valus in terms of geological and educational aspect, including Hajeon mud flat and Myoungsasipri beach. The results of study imply that if various educational programs for the geotourism are properly developed, the Gochang-gun area has potential to be designated as the national geopark of Korea.

  • Based on a summary of the previous studies on columnar joints, this study presents research strategies and subjects to understand a formation of columnar joints, and its application in South Korea as follows; geometry of colonnade and entablature, formation mechanism and pattern change, surface morphology and internal structure, platy joint at the top and the bottom of columnar joints, crack patterns in drying starch-water slurries, using numerical models and computer graphics on joint formation, scale and geometry concerned with occurrence of volcanic rock, petrological and mineralogical study of the host rock. Additionally, more research is needed, such as deformation of column pattern during the hot state, secondary landform by alteration and weathering on the Earth's surface such as rock stream, tor and tafoni. This study will take an active role in research of columnar joint and the Cenozoic lava flow of South Korea. Results of this study will be useful to the activation of geotourism and geological field study.
