  • This paper presents the results of finite element analysis on the seismic response of a soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall subjected to a prescribed earthquake record. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the maximum wall displacement occurs at the top, exhibiting a cantilever type of wall movement. Also revealed is that the increase in reinforcement force is more pronounced in the upper part of the reinforced zone, resulting in a more or less uniform distribution. None of the design guidelines appears to be able to correctly predict the dynamic force increase when compared with the results of finite element analysis. The calculation model adopted by the NCMA guideline, however, appears to compare better with the results of finite element analysis as well as field survey than the FHWA guideline. Based on the findings from this study, a number of implications to the current design methods are discussed.

  • Case studies published in Korea versus the low ground fault is applied on the bridge based on theory or experience in the design of pile bearing capacity by the value of the expression is designed to conduct field tests Disclosure Load bearing capacity value, the result of applying a reasonable construction cost savings of approximately 10 eokyeowon Has, in the design of site investigation was insufficient to require additional efforts. Apply the appropriate value from the extra support in the design of accurate ground survey and air speed to cut the budget and social technology can ensure the reliability was unknown.

  • To examine saturation characteristics of an unsaturated soil in the steep slope area with collapse, it separated dry season from rainy season and measured water content and permeability, and measured permeability by using a tension infiltrometer in the site. In addition, it conducted electrical resistivity survey to look into thickness of ground and geological structure of underground. The collapsed slope increased depth of weathered zone compared to upper slope, and there electrical resistivity anomalous zone caused by the filtrated underground water was observed. The permeability of the collapsed area was observed high compared to upper and lower slopes of retarding basin without collapse, and the permeability measured by dividing the dry season and rainy season was measured high in case of dry season.

  • This study presents methodology and tools for remote measurement of the orientation of the rock parting surfaces. Two close circuit video camera capture the pictures of a rock excavation surface while a laser beam scans the surface. Positions of the laser beams in the two digital images are recognized by image processing. Using the stereoscopic concept, three dimensional coordinations of the rock surface and the orientation of the rock parting planes are calculated. Point, cross and line type laser beams are tested for better image processing results and measurement accuracy of the coordinates. According to a simple accuracy test, cross beam show better results than the point beam. However, line beam show more promising results for the measurement of the rock parting surfaces.

  • This paper resorts to rock mass rating and rock mass quality to draw value based on the evaluation of rock and to draw interrelation formula in relation to rock mass quality, A comparative analysis was given of survey values reported in the existing documents. This paper has tried to find out the relationship between RMR and Q System for the sake of choosing rational reinforcing patterns and of the safety of tunnels. The results run as follow: RMR=8.251n(Q)+43.83. This paper has also tried to find out the relationship between RMR and Q System by using Fuzzy Approximate Reasoning Concept. We suggest that those in charge should not depend on a single system only after evaluating the classification of rocks, and compare one result with another for the good of keeping track of the condition of base rocks in a better way.

  • The study tasked by Ryan Lode Mines, Inc. involved analysis of pit slope stability for two future pits, Ryan and Curlew. A geological discontinuity survey and groundwater information were obtained through a field program. Twenty core logs containing geotechnical information were used for rock mass classification. The kinematic analysis was performed based on a friction angle (${\Phi}=35^{\circ}$), the distribution of geological structures, and a dry slope condition. Factors of safety of pit slopes in two future mines were determined using the limit equilibrium method. The mine slopes and benches designed by Mine Development Associates (MDA) were analyzed. The analysis indicated that both pits should have an overall safety factor above 1.0, provided the slopes are kept dry. However, slopes in both pits exceeding 91.4 m (300 ft) high will become critical, when water fills the cracks and discontinuities.

  • In this research, the cracking of tunnel concrete lining was investigated and analyzed through long-term measurement and nonlinear numerical analysis. For one year after the casting of lining, the stresses and strains were measured by the sensors installed in hard rock tunnel lining. The measurements showed that only small stresses which were less than cracking stress occurred in every survey sections regardless of sensor directions. It could be induced that the external load applied to the lining was small or ignorable. Also, it was carried out short-term numerical analysis based on such site condition as ambient temperature, the- degree of overbreak and mold staying period. Long-term numerical analysis based on creep & shrinkage and nonlinear cracking was carried out. The output showed that construction condition and ambient environments could make the lining concrete crack without external loads. The cracks formed in this process does not indicate the structural instability of the tunnel.

  • As the first step for the application of seismic landslide hazard maps to domestic cases, two types of hazard maps on Ul-joo from pseudostatic analysis and Newmark sliding block analysis are constructed and comllared. Arcview, the GIS program and the 1:5,000 digital maps of the test-site are used for the construction of hazard maps and tile parameters for the analyses are determined by seismic survey and laboratory tests. The results from the pseudostatic analysis have more conservative values of lower critical slope angles, although the results from the two different analyses have similar tendencies. In detail, with increasing the peak ground acceleration, the difference between the two analyses in the critical slope angle increases, while the difference decreases with increasing the maximum soil depth.

  • Structures show the phenomena of deformation and lowering of function with time-lapse by artificial environments and changes of geotechnical conditions or accumulation of initial deformation elements. This study aims the structural assessment of cultural heritage. Non-destructive evaluation techniques were applied to protect it from survey: 3D precise laser scanning surveying system was applied to measure the exact size, displacement and declining angles.

  • This research intends to clarify the engineering characteristics of compression index which plays the most important role in the calculation of consolidation settlement, based on the survey of the clay in the estuary of Nakdong River. In addition, it will analyze the parameters of soil and the correlation between the parameters and the existing relation, especially the correlation with compression index, through which it will propose a proper relation for the parameters of clay in this area. As a result of the study, the relation between the settlement and the compression rate using compression index showed 13% settlement error on the average. It is judged that this number can be used for forecasting the consolidation characteristics and the settlement for brief (preliminary) design when the difference between the execution settlement and the measuring settlement is regarded to be 15%.
