A magnetotelluric (MT) survey has been performed to delineate deeply extended fracture systems at the geothermal field in Seokmo Island, Korea. To assist interpretation of the MT data, geological surveying and well logging of existing wells were also performed. The surface geology of the island shows Cretaceous and Jurassic granite in the north and Precambrian schist in the south. The geothermal regime has been found along the boundary between the schist and Cretaceous granite. Because of the deep circulation along the fracture system, geothermal gradient of the target area exceeds $45^{\circ}C/km$, which is much higher than the average geothermal gradient in Korea. 2D and 3D inversions of MT data clearly showed a very conductive anomaly, which is interpreted as a fracture system bearing saline water that extends at least down to 1.5 km depth and is inclined eastwards. After drilling down to the depth of 1280 m, more than 4000 tons/day of geothermal water overflowed with temperature higher than $70^{\circ}C$. This water showed very similar chemical composition and temperature to those from another existing well, so that they can be considered to have the same origin; i.e. from the same fracture system. A new geothermal project for combined heat and power generation was launched in 2009 in Seokmo Island, based on the survey. Additional geophysical investigations including MT surveys to cover a wider area, seismic reflection surveys, borehole surveys, and well logging of more than 20 existing boreholes will be conducted.
Seismic refraction survey which is assumed to be effective for investigating of the amount of bed sediment was applied to two sites having different soil types. The ten lines of seismic surveys were carried out in the areas of the levee near the Wolchon Bridge, Yongin and the Damam levee, Yecheon. At the same time, two borehole data were obtained to be used in classifying geological formations on the inverted seismic sections. As the results of interpolating the depths of geological formations and the surface elevation values, it is possible to estimate the volume of the bed sediments at $24,000m^3\;and\;56,000m^3$ in Yongin and Yecheon, respectively.
With the aim of global environmental monitoring we carried out GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys at the Livingstion Island in Antarctica. Research area is near the Mt. Charra (340 m) in Livingston Island which is located 80 km to the southwest of the King Sejong Station. We have collected 5 lines of GPR data. Two kinds of survey, CMP (Common Midpoint) surveys and common offset profiles, were performed. We classified the glacier into the three layers using electromagnetic velocity of the ice and reflection characteristic. The depth of glacier reached about 80∼110 m. Some reflectors showed the evidence of the water filled englacial drainage and volcanic ash-layers.
2-D and 3-D resistivity surveys were carried out at the Deok-In2 levee during the period of arid and rainy seasons to assess the waterproof effectiveness of sheet pile and routing sections and detect the location of pipings. Inverted resistivity sections clearly indicated the boundaries of sheet pile and grouting sections and the locations of pipings observed at the ground surface. It is necessary that proper survey parameters are determined considering inverted depth and resolution and contacting resistance is decreased to obtain favorable result.
Though numerous drilling has been performed in Jeju Island for development of ground water, the wells are mostly located along the coast lines or at low altitude area, and can hardly be found on the mid-mountain area. Two-dimensional magnetotelluric (MT) surveys have been carried out to cover the lack of geological Informal ion on the mid-mountain area and to figure out any possible structures or evidences for deep geothermal energy remained. Two-dimensional (2-D) inversion of MT data for four survey lines surrounding the Halla mountain show a thick layer having around 10 ohm-m in the depth of a few hundred meters throughout the survey area, which can be considered as the unconsol idated sedimentary layer. And they also show a conductive anomaly extending to more than 2km depth at the central part of each survey lines, which can possibly be related with old volcanic activities during the formation of Halla Mt.. Further seological/geophysical investigations should be followed.
The location and geometry of the Ulsan Fault play important roles in interpreting tectonic evolution of the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Dipole-dipole electrical resistivity surveys and seismic refraction surveys were carried out in the Yaksoo area, Ulsan in order to measure the thickness of the alluvium covering the Ulsan Fault and to find associated fracture zones and possibly the location of its major fault plane. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted. Some results reported previously by others were also used in this interpretation. No low resistivity anomalies were found in the cross-sectional resistivity image of the survey line located in the east of the Dong River. In contrast, well-developed continuous low resistivity anomalies were detected in the west of the Dong River. This strongly suggests that the major fault plane of the Ulsan Fault is located under or in the west part of the Dong River. Two refraction boundaries corresponding to the underground water level and the bottom of the alluvium were found by refraction surveys carried out on the limited part of the east survey line. The thickness of the alluvium was found to be about 30 m. Small faults in the basement rock identified by reflection surveys were not detected by both resistivity and refraction seismic surveys. This might be explained by assuming that low resistivity anomaly is more closely related to the clay contents than the water contents. On the other hand, it may be resulted by the limited resolution of the resistivity and refraction surveys. Detailed study is required to clarify the reason. Resistivity survey is frequently considered to be a good exploration method to detect subsurface faults. However, it appears to be less useful than reflection seismic survey in this work. In dipole-dipole resistivity survey, the number of separation should be increased to survey deeper subsurface with the same resolution. However, signal to noise ratio decreases as the number of separation increases. In this survey area, the signal to noise ratio of up to sixteen separations was good enough based on the statistical properties of measurements.
The 1 $km^2$ area studied is located in Sukchun-ri, Hwasung-koon, the southern part of Kyeonggi-do. Even though this site has been known as a contaminated area caused by seawater intrusions, geophysical and geochemical surveys have never been carried out at the site to determine the extent of the seawater contamination and to investigate whether the seawater intrusion is in progress. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of seawater contamination and a preferred channel of the seawater intrusion using geophysical methods such as DC resistivity surveys with Schlumberger array and a dipole-dipole array. In order to determine whether the seawater intrusion is in progress in the area, DC resistivity monitoring with Schlumberger array was performed. According to the resistivity map obtained from the inversion of the resistivity data measured with Schlumberger array, the study area is divided into two districts as relatively lowly resistive (less than 30 ohm-m) and highly resistive (more than 30 ohm-m) areas. The distribution of the lowly resistive area is consistent with the distribution of the layer composed of clay minerals, and the resistivity of this layer decreases slowly as approaching to the old seashore. Hydrogeological analysis shows that the clay layer within a distance of about 200 m from the seashore has been already contaminated by sea-water and its electric conductivity is 8 times higher than that of the sand layer covered by the clay layer. According to the results of the 2-dimensional DC resistivity surveys with a dipole-dipole array, there are two preferred channels of the seawater intrusion in the site, and both the channels are in the NW-SE direction from the old seashore. The lowly resistive zone in the southern channel extends to a depth of 80 m. The DC resistivity monitoring with Schlumberger array was carried out along the preferred channel which has the low resistivity Bone (fracture zone) that extended to a depth of 80 m. The time series of apparent resistivity, measured at a distance of 260 m from the old coast line, fluctuates with a period of 12 hours. From these observations, it can be concluded that the seawater intrusion caused by tidal action is still in progress along the fractured zone interpreted by the DC resistivity surveys with a dipole-dipole array.
Lots of various utilities are buried under the surface. The effective management of underground utilities is becoming the very important subject for the harmonious administration of the city. Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) survey including other various underground survey methods, is mainly used to detect the position and depth of buried underground utilities. However, GPR is not applicable, under the circumstances
of shallow depth and places, where subsurface materials are inhomogeneous and are composed of clay, salt and gravels. The aim of this study is to overcome these limitations of GPR and other underground surveys. High-frequency electromagnetic (HFEM) method is developed for the non-destructive precise deep surveying of underground utilities. The method is applied in the site where current underground
surveys are useless to detect the underground big pipes, because of poor geotechnical environment. As a result, HFEM survey was very successful in detecting the buried shallow and deep underground pipes and in obtaining the geotechnical information, although other underground surveys including GPR were not applicable. Therefore this method is a promising new technique in the lots of fields, such as underground surveying and archaeology.

Two-dimensional (2D) MT surveys near the Century mine in Australia have been performed with very far remote reference in Esashi, Japan (RR_ESS) as well as Gregory Downs (RR_GREG), which are roughly 6,400 km and 80 km apart from the survey area, respectively. Good quality of MT data could be obtained by remote reference processing with RR_GREG, while the coherency of magnetic fields between field sites and RR_ESS was not sufficient to be used as remote data. Both 2D and 3D inversion of 2D profile data represented the general geological structure beneath the survey area. The main target of the survey, Termite Range Fault, appeared as a boundary between a conductive block to the north and a resistive block to the south in the reconstructed resistivity section, and is inclined slightly to the north-east direction.
Given that induced polarization (IP) and direct current (DC) resistivity surveys are similar in terms of data acquisition, most DC resistivity systems are equipped with a time-domain IP data acquisition function. In addition, the time-domain IP data include the DC resistivity values. As such, IP and DC resistivity data are intimately linked, and the inversion of IP data is a two-step process based on DC resistivity inversions. Nevertheless, IP surveys are rarely applied, in contrast to DC resistivity surveys, as proper inversion software is unavailable. In this study, through numerical modeling and inversion experiments, we analyze the problems with the conventional inverse mapping technique used to invert time-domain IP data. Furthermore, we propose a modified inverse mapping technique that can effectively suppress inversion artifacts. The performance of the technique is confirmed through inversions applied to synthetic IP data.
