With the trend towards welding automation and robotization, mathematical models for studying the influence of various variables on the weld bead geometry in gas metal arc (GMA) welding process are required. Partial penetration, single-pass bead-on-plate welds using the GMA welding process were fabricated in 12mm mild steel plates employed four different process variables. Experimental results has been designed to investigate the analytical and empirical formulae, and develop mathematical equations for understanding the relationship between process variables and weld bead geometry. The relationships can be usefully employed not only for open loop process control, but also for adaptive control provided that dynamic sensing of process output is performed.

This paper describes a mid-course guidance strategy based on the earliest intercept geometry (EIG) guidance. An analytical solution and performance validation will be addressed for generalized mid-course guidance problems in area air-defence in order to improve reachability and performance. The EIG is generated for a wide range of possible manoeuvres of the challenging missile based on the guidance algorithm using differential geometry concepts. The main idea is that a mid-course guidance law can defend the area as long as it assures that the depending area and objects are always within the defended area defined by EIG. The velocity of Intercept Point in EIG is analytically derived to control the Intercept Geometry and the defended area. The proposed method can be applied in deciding a missile launch window and launch point for the launch phase.
A variational formulation for plane elasticity problems is derived based on an isogeometric approach. The isogeometric analysis is an emerging methodology such that the basis functions in analysis domain arc generated directly from NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry. Thus. the solution space can be represented in terms of the same functions to represent the geometry. The coefficients of basis functions or the control variables play the role of degrees-of-freedom. Furthermore, due to h-. p-, and k-refinement schemes, the high order geometric features can be described exactly and easily without tedious re-meshing process. The isogeometric sensitivity analysis method enables us to analyze arbitrarily shaped structures without re-meshing. Also, it provides a precise construction method of finite element model to exactly represent geometry using B-spline base functions in CAD geometric modeling. To obtain precise shape sensitivity, the normal and curvature of boundary should be taken into account in the shape sensitivity expressions. However, in conventional finite element methods, the normal information is inaccurate and the curvature is generally missing due to the use of linear interpolation functions. A continuum-based adjoint sensitivity analysis method using the isogeometric approach is derived for the plane elasticity problems. The conventional shape optimization using the finite element method has some difficulties in the parameterization of boundary. In isogeometric analysis, however, the geometric properties arc already embedded in the B-spline shape functions and control points. The perturbation of control points in isogeometric analysis automatically results in shape changes. Using the conventional finite clement method, the inter-element continuity of the design space is not guaranteed so that the normal vector and curvature arc not accurate enough. On tile other hand, in isogeometric analysis, these values arc continuous over the whole design space so that accurate shape sensitivity can be obtained. Through numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity analysis method is verified to show excellent agreement with finite difference sensitivity.
Weld pool oscillation for the full-penetration GTA welding process was investigated for its possible application to weld penetration control through theoretical modeling and experiment. Energy method was used to estimate the natural frequency of the molten pool having the physically-acceptable weld geometry and oscillation modes. An unique experimental system was built which had the data acquisiton and video capabilities so that the pool oscillation signals and molten pool surfaces could be monitored continuously. Pool oscillation was detected through arc voltage and arc light emission simultaneously. The signal from arc light emission showed good coherence with that from arc voltage, and arc light generated the higher quality signal. The molten pool was found to oscillate in different oscillation modes based on the travel speed and weld geometry. The natural frequency estimated from the theoretical model agreed reasonably well with the experimental results.
This paper describes the effect of impact configurations on a single robot manipulator. The effect of different configurations of kinematically redundant arms on impact forces at their end effectors during contact with the environment is investigated. Instead of the well-known impact ellipsoid, I propose an analytic method on the geometric configuration of the impact directly from the mathematical definition. By calculating the length along the specified motion direction and volume of the geometry, we can determine the characteristics of robot configurations in terms of both the impact along the specified direction and the ability of the robot withstanding the impact. Simulations of various impact configurations are discussed at the end of this paper.
In this study, the dynamic flying characteristics of the worn head sliders are investigated theoretically due to the change in head geometry caused by head and disk contact. The film shapes can be approximated as taper- truncated cycloidal-flat film. Two-dimensional time dependent modified Reynolds equation included molecular slip effect are formulated with neglected the roughness effect. The motion of head slider was assumed to have two degree of freedom in this work. Finite difference approximation with Newton Raphson iterative technique and the fourth order Runge-Kutta method were implemented to obtain the transient response of the slider head with various change in head geometry numerically and compared with the transient response of the IBM3380 type head slider. The simulation results show the film shape has affects significantly on the static and dynamic characteristic of slider head in magnetic storage systems.
The concept of variable-geometry truss structure(VGTS) is introduced as a class of actively controlled adaptive structure. VGTS can purposefully vary its geometric configurations by changing the lengths of some members of the structure. General kinematics and inverse kinematics of a statically determinate VGTS(variable geometry truss structure) are studied. The solution technique is based on the Jacobian matrix obtained via joint equilibrium equations. Pseudoinverse control method is applied to resolve the redundancy of a large VGTS. two types of actuator layout of octahedral type VGTS, VG truss and Stewart platform, are compared. Introducing the concept of performance index, Stewart platform based layout was found to has less consumption energy and manipulation time. A functional VGTS model with 3 octahedral modules is designed and manufactured for the labaratory demonstration. Six vertically located length-variable members are used to create general 6 d.o.f. motions.
The Track geometry measuring on High-speed railway is the most important subject for the track construction and track maintenance work. Also the measuring accuracy is so significant part because it provides principle data for the maintenance plan and the assesment of working quality and can control the train speed limitation. From this point of view, it is very important to verify for the track recording coach(EM120) in KNR. According to the result of spectrum analysis, the noise near 1m waveband was found on the track recording data from EM120. So, New filter has been applied to remove the noise form track recording data. and it makes possible to acquire resembling result to real track geometry.
Optimization of process variables such as arc current, welding voltage and welding speed in terms of the weld characteristics desired is the key step in achieving high quality and improving performance characteristics without increasing the cost. Consequently, incorrect settings of those process variables give rise to deviations in the welding characteristics from the desired bead geometry. Therefore, trainee welders are referred to the tabulated information relating different metal types and thickness as to recommend the desired values of process variables. Basically, the bead geometry plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of the weld. So that it is very important to select the process variables for obtaining optimal bead geometry. However, it is difficult for the traditional identification methods to provide an accurate model because the optimized welding process is non-linear and time-dependent. In this paper, the possibilities of the Infra-red sensor in sensing and control of the bead geometry in the automated welding process are presented. Infra-red sensor is a well-known method to deal with the problems with a high degree of fuzziness so that the sensor is employed to build the relationship between process variables and the quality characteristic the proposed above respectively. Based on several neural networks, the mathematical models are derived from extensive experiments with different welding parameters and complex geometrical features. The developed system enables to select the optimal welding parameters and control the desired weld dimensions during arc welding process.
The considered satellite is supposed to operate in the earth-point mode and sun-point mode in accordance with the mission requirements. The magnetic field correction is based on the orbit geometry using a set of measured magnetic field data from the three-axis-magnetometer and its algorithm excludes the earth’s magnetic field model. Moreover, the usefulness of the proposed method is investigated throughout the simulation of KOMPSAT-1.
