  • A 2-dimensional FEM/GEM program was developed for analyzing forming processes of an arbitrarily shaped draw-die, in which plane strain condition is assumed and linear line elements are employed. FEM formulation adopted a new algorithm for solving force equilibrium as well as non-penetration condition simultaneously. For the case of numerical divergence at nearly final forming stages and the initial guess in Newton-Raphson iterations, geometric force equilibrium method(GEM) is also introduced. The developed program was tested with the simulation of stamping processes of automotive bonnet inner pannel in order to verify the usefulness and validity of FEM/GEM formulation.

  • The aim of this paper is to present theorems on the exitence of zeros for mappings defined on convex subsets of topological vector spaces with values in a vector space. In addition to natural assumptions of continuity, convexity, and compactness, the mappings are subject to some geometric conditions. In the first theorem, the mapping satisfies a "Darboux-type" property expressed in terms of an auxiliary numerical function. Typically, this functions is, in this case, related to an order structure on the target space. We derive an existence theorem for "obtuse" quasiconvex mappings with values in an ordered vector space. In the second theorem, we prove the existence of a "common zero" for an arbitrary (not necessarily countable) family of mappings satisfying a general "inwardness" condition againg expressed in terms of numerical functions (these numerical functions could be duality pairings (more generally, bilinear forms)). Our inwardness condition encompasses classical inwardness conditions of Leray-Schauder, Altman, or Bergman-Halpern types.

  • A theorem of Robert Blumenthal is used here in order to obtain a sufficient condition for a function between two Finsler manifolds to be a fibre bundle map. Our study is connected with two possible constructions: 1) a Finslerian generalization of usually Kaluza-Klein theories which use Riemannian metrics, the well-known particular case of Finsler metrics, 2) a Finslerian version of reduction process from geometric mechanics. Due to a condition in the Blumenthal's result the completeness of Euler-Lagrange vector fields of Finslerian type is discussed in detail and two situations yielding completeness are given: one concerning the energy and a second related to Finslerian fundamental function. The connection of our last framework, namely a regular Lagrangian having the energy as a proper (in topological sense) function, with the celebrated $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ Recurrence Theorem is pointed out.

  • MDO (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) methodology is an emerging new technology to solve a complicate structural analysis and design problem with a large number of design variables and constraints. In this paper MDO methodology is adopted through the use of computer aided systems such as Geometric Solid Modeller, Mesh Generator, CAD system and CAE system. And this paper introduces MDO methodology as a new method for structural analysis and design through the application to the structural design of flap drive system. In a MDO methodology application to the structural design of flap drive system, kinetodynamic analysis is done using a simple aerodynamic analysis model for the air flow over the flap surface instead of difficult aerodynamic analysis. Simultaneously the structural static analysis is done to obtain the optimum structural condition. And the structural buckling analysis for push pull rod is also done to confirm the optimum structural condition (optimum cross section shape of push pull rod).

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchanger with R410A. This study carried out experimental and numerical analysis for indoor heat exchangers. In the experimental study, capacity of the indoor unit was estimated 8.3 kWh with the valve opening rate of 95% for the 50% partial operation condition. The air temperatures were measured using 80 thermocouples. This study also compared experimental data with the calculated data for the outlet temperature and the tube length. It is found that the relative errors between the experiment data and the calculated result are 4.2% and 0.5% for the outlet temperature and the tube length, respectively.

  • Fractures in the form of micro cracks are commonly found in natural rocks. A rock behaves in a complex way due to fracture; in particular, the anisotropic strength of a rock material is significantly influenced by the presence of these fractures. Therefore, it is essential to understand the failure mechanism of a fractured rock. In this study, a fractured rock is formulated in terms of fabric tensor based on geometric and mechanical simplifications. In this way, position, density and shape of fractures can be determined by the fabric tensor so that rocks containing multi-fractures can successfully be modeled. Also an index to evaluate the degree of anisotropy of a fractured rock is proposed. Hence, anisotropic strength of a rock containing fractures under uniaxial compression condition is estimated through a series of numerical analyses for the multi-fractured model. Numerical investigations are carried out by varying the fracture angle from $0^{\circ}\;to\;90^{\circ}$ and relationship between uniaxial compression strength and the degree of anisotropy is investigated. By comparing anisotropic strength of numerical analysis with analytic solution, this study attempts to understand the failure mechanism of rock containing fractures.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of vegetation on the cutting slope applied by vegetation system in the whole land. The engineering characteristics of slopes were investigated using the face mapping and physical tests. From the statistical methods, a relationship between a geologic stratum and degree of covering was independent. Therefore, the afforestation of slope was affected more by condition of vegetation as direction and opening of joints, and a topsoil state than by conventional classification of layer. It was concluded that the adjustable vegetation on the slope considering condition of geometric shape of slope, joint data and spontaneous type could make useful early afforestation.

  • Water condensate accumulated on the surface of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger significantly affects its thermal and hydraulic performances. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of condensate retention on the air-side heat transfer performance and flow friction for various flow and geometric conditions. Total of twelve samples of slit and plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers are tested under dry and wet conditions. The thermal fluid measurements are made using a psychrometric calorimeter. Frontal air velocity varies in the range from 0.7 m/s to 1.5 m/s. Using the experimental data, presented are heat transfer coefficients in terms of Colburn j-factors and friction factors, and these data are compared with the existing correlations.

  • The geometric size and the refrigeration capacity of a refrigeration system are strongly dependent on the capacity of heat exchanger, which is one of the key design parameters. In this paper, the effect of the capacities of heat exchangers on the performance of a real refrigeration system operated in a vapor compression cycle was analyzed by the numerical simulation. From the results, the conditions that gave the maximum values of the refrigeration capacity or COP were respectively determined as a function of the capacities of condenser and evaporator under the given ambient and operating condition.

  • In GPS (Global Positioning System) positioning, various measures can be used to select satellites or to evaluate the positioning results. Among these, GDOP (Geometric Dilution of Precision) and RGDOP (Relative GDOP) are the most frequently used. Although these measures are frequently used, the relationship between them is not clearly known. Moreover, the condition number is used as a traditional measure of numerical stability in solving linear equations. Sometimes, the volume of a tetrahedon made by the line of sight vector is used for simplicity. All of these measures share some common properties as well as differences. The relationships between these measures are analyzed in this paper.
