  • A geographic information system (GIS) generally has a great deal of geographic data and has a singular storage structure individually. It is very hard to exchange geographic data between geographic information systems which store their geographic data with incompatible formats. Moreover, since it needs large amount of storage space to store geographic data and expensive cost to input them. In this paper, we designed and implemented a SDTS (Spatial Data Transfer Standard) Data Conversion System for Gothic which is an existing geographic information system. In order to convert geographic data without loss of information, we first carefully define a mapping between SDTS data and Gothic data. Especially, since SDTS data are in the format of ISO8211, the FIPS123 library is used to access them. Because the internal data format of Gothic is not open to the public, we also use the Gothic library to access Gothic data. The SDTS data conversion system developed in this paper uses an intermediate file to convert geographic data efficiently. In addition, we use UIL (User Interface Language) to implement a graphic user interface (GUI) of our system.

  • In this paper forest fire status information management system was developed under web environment using web GIS(geographic information system) technology. Though this system, general users can easily retrieval domestic forest fire status information and obtain that in visual way such as maps, graphs, and texts if they have only certain web browsers. Moreover, officials, who have system access authority, can easily control and manage all domestic forest fire status information through input interface, retrieval interface, and out interface of the system. This system can be considered as the first domestic system to manage forest fire status data and service them in visual through user friendly interfaces on web. In order to implement this system, IIS 5.0 of Microsoft is used as web server and Oracle 8i and ASP(active server page) are used for database construction and dynamic web page operation, respectively. Also, ArcGIS IMS(internet map server) of ESRI is used to serve maps by using Java and HTML as system development languages. Not only the domestic tendency of forest fire but also the forest fire status information of certain area and time such as the frequency and the loss can be presented through distribution maps, graphs and tables. Therefore, this system is supposed to play as a important role when the policy relate to domestic forest fire is established. In addition, the self consciousness of people against forest fire can be inspired and the foundation of scientific and systemic forest fire services can be obtained through this system in the future.

  • Recently, as the growth of the application of geographical information in various application fields, a geographic information system(GIS) has been building for using them efficiently. GIS has been managing them in use data format individually. To service geographical information based distribution efficiently, there must be a Data Conversion System that can deal with converting of GIS geographical information with incompatible formats. Therefore, in this paper, we design and implement a Spatial Data Translation System with international standard to convert geographic data efficiently.

  • Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on GIS(Geographic Information System) to process spatial date. As GIS comes to be used in many fields and used by many people, Web GIS which is a GIS system used on the internet, was proposed as a good tool to maintain the need. There is an increasing demand for Web GIS to provide more opportunity for users to manage and to analyze geotechnical data. This study mainly focused on the design and application of Web GIS particularly with geotechnical data, including design of efficient database structure for borehole data. A practical application of the Web GIS to tunnelling site has been successfully completed by the design of several analytical functions.

  • Recently, as a part of NGIS project, cultural-assets digital map is produced by cultural properties administration and local autonomous entities. Cultural-assets unified GIS(Geographic Information System) is essential to cultural properties managers and other organizations which are executing land related business for appling it at planning stage. With explosive national land developments, it has been obligated to implement surface survey by the cultural properties protection Art. In this paper, we develope a MSSS(Mobile Surface Survey System) and central GIS management system using CDMA wireless network, real time DGPS and C/S GIS technologies. And we suggest a construction-plan of cultural-assets digital map drawing and managing system by Archaeologist using developed system by this study.

  • Importance of forest recreation in the Korean forestry situation has recently been increased and will be even more rapidly in the future. For efficient planning and development for the national scale, computer aided information techniques are urgently needed. Geographic information system(GIS) has been proven to organize and analyze data from various sources for large geographical areas. Unlike conventional data base management system (DBMS), GIS can handle spatially referenced data and, thus, can be a good candidate for recreation planning support system. This paper introduces the concept and components of GIS and illustrates examples of GIS applications. A possibility of system integration with other data sources is also suggested.

  • The two key elements of the Geographic Information System(GIS) are (1) Data base management of land resources information as computer files, and (2) Software ability to analyze and map this information. More geometrically corrected SPOT derived land cover information and digital topographic infornation from digitial elevation model (DEM) were integrated as input data of GIS in order to create landscape modelling. The ultimate goal of this GIS is to establish the use of physiographic data as an intergral part of the comprehensive planning process in order to avoid significant environmental and economic problems.

  • This paper show that, without installation of expensive VR (Virtual Reality) program, the sharing information is possible through posting three-dimensional road structures on the web, and avoiding the conventional top-down decision making method, fast bottom-up communication is possible base on the Virtual GIS (Geographic Information System). In this paper, using Viewpoint Scene Builder, internet-based software, the transformation was conducted to give pertinent type for web posting. In order to use the completed route at the scene builder, the output with ASCII Export is required, and ASE (ASCII Scene Export) contains the property information including the coordinate and frame of mesh vertex. Through in advance recognition of the problems regarding route design and petition due to environmental rights infringement, the time and cost due to design alteration can be reduced. It's difficult to provide VR based on the internet because file that embodied with internet GIS was complicated and its capacity comes to scores of mega-bites. But, this study provides VR with internet according to a basis by simplification of files.

  • Small hydropower is one of the many types of new and renewable energy, which South Korea is planning to develop, as the country is abundant in endowed resources. In order to fully utilize small hydropower resources, there is a need for greater precision in quantifying small hydropower resources and establish an environment in which energy sources can be discovered using the small hydropower geographic information system. This study has given greater precision to calculating annual electricity generation and installed capacity of small hydropower plants of 117 medium basins by inquiring into average annual rainfall, basin area and runoff coefficient, which is anticipated to promote small hydropower resources utilization. Small hydropower geographic information system was also established by additionally providing base information on quantified small hydropower resources and analysis function and small hydropower generator status, rivers, basin, rainfall gauging station, water level gauging station etc.. Established system of GIS small hydropower energy can be used gather basic information for positive applications of small hydropower energy nationwide.
