  • Dinoflagellates in the genus Symbiodinium are known as zooxanthellae and exist as either symbiotic or free-living forms. Among this genus, two species, Symbiodinium minutum and Symbiodinium psygmophilum, were recently established based on genetic characters. However, some critical morphological characters of these species, such as plate formulae and related diagnoses have not been provided yet. In this study, we analyzed the morphology of S. minutum and S. psygmophilum by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The S. minutum had the Kofoidian plate formula consisting of a small plate (x), elongated amphiesmal vesicle (EAV), 4', 5a, 8", 7s, two cingulum rows, 18-20c, 6''', and 2'''', while S. psygmophilum had x, EAV, 4', 5a, 8", 7-10s, two cingulum rows, 20-22c, 5-6''', and 1''''. These plate formulae are different from any other reported Symbiodinium species. In addition, both species had a pentagonal 1a plate and a hexagonal 2a plate, while other known Symbiodinium species had a hexagonal 1a plate and a pentagonal 2a plate. Thus, we confirm the species status of S. minutum and S. psygmophilum based on morphological and genetic characters and report the detailed morphological characteristics of these two species.

  • Cronobacter spp. (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii), a Gram-negative bacillus, is a rare cause of meningitis and central nervous system infections. In England, the first case infected by this organism occurred in 1958. By July 2008, approximately 120 documented cases of Cronobacter spp. infection and at least 27 deaths have been identified from all around the world in the published literature and in reports submitted by public health sectors. In 2007, it was proposed by European organizations that the original taxonomy of E. sakazakii would be revised, to consist of five new species moved to a new genus, and identified as "Cronobacter". E. sakazakii has thus now been reclassified as 6 separate species in the new genus, Cronobacter, gen. nov., within the Enterobacteriaceae family. The new species are presently Cronobacter sakazakii, C. turicensis, C. malonaticus, C. muytjensii, and C. dublinensis; the sixth species is identified simply as genomospecies I, as currently including only two representative strains. The objectives of this review are to provide insight on (1) the classification and taxonomy of Cronobacter spp., (2) its clinical etiology and pathogenicity, (3) prequency of Cronobacter spp. in different categories of ready-to-eat food other than infant formula, (4) methods for detecting, isolating and typing Cronobacter spp., and (5) recent research trends for detecting Cronobacter spp.

  • The interspecific relationships of the genus Leucophenga, L.concilia, L.maculata, L.orientalis , and L.quinquenmaculipennis were investigated by soluble proteins analysis. the electrophoretic banding patterns of the four species analyzed by SDS-PAGE were scanned by densitormeter. The soluble protein patters of L.maculata and L.concilia by SDS-PAGE appeared similarly and on the other hand, those of L.quinquemaculipennis had a different forms from three other species. The genetic distance among the four species of TDE analysis was calculated by formula of the Aquadro and Avis(1981) . The genetic distance between L.maculata and L.concilia was 0.393 , the lowest of all and between L.maculata and L.quinquemaculipennis was 0.496, the highest of all. The dendrogram was established using UPGMA method based on genetic distance obtained by TDE analysis. Clustered patterns as follows ; first, L.maculata and L.concilia were clustered, and L.orientalis and L. quinquemaculipennis followed the firstone in order. In consequence, it seems that the interspecific relationship of L.quinquemaculipennis was farther from the other three species, while that of L.maculata and L.concilia was closer than that of L.orientalis.

  • In order to strengthen objectivity and availability of oriental herb medicine, the standard formula for herbs has been attempted to set up by experimenting and documentary testing original herbs which were recorded in authorized document. The object herb medicine is Codonopsis Pilosulae Radix. The internal and external morphological standard in this study is expected to supply the search for several physiochemical reaction, biological reaction, determination of indicator material and identification of gene with basic sources in the future. The result of study is as follows; In the external shape, it was possible that herbs were distinguished according to artificial classification and that same genus-degree of relatedness among herbs could be distinguished by more precise and active observation. In the shape of real herbs, I compared current herbs in market with original herbs which were just collected or were on the course of drying. In addition, it was possible that the internal shape could be identified by using microscope after butanol series. In powder herbs, it was possible to purify the shape by microscope through maceration of natural and powder herbs. Though it was impossible to make distinction of herbs which are not current in my search contents, this search contents will be a standard for alpplying herbs in the future. Despite such a useful character, it was difficult to deal with power herbs because it was uncertain to make a standard for them on account of the crush of these tissue. Since powders shape of herbs in a few documents were regard not as the powder shapes of natural herbs but as the maceration state of them. It is suggested that we should inspect the original herbs which are not crushed yet with a microscope in order to identify crushed shape of powder herbs from now on. An Additional standard establishment including physiochemical reaction and gene research is required in order to supplement the fault of this search. As for the supplement about this search, considering that many kinds of same genus-degree of relatedness are being current now, it is necessary that each herb should he collected only after identifying and that the succeeding search of each herb should be proceeded for the regular establishment of internal and external standard.

  • This study was attempted to clarify the taxonomic problems that have been raised up to now in the study o section Telephium, genus, Sedum: the delimitation of taxa belong to Telephium group, their relationship, and nomenclatural confusion and the rank of Telephium group. Specimens were collected at 19 sites in Korea. The habitat, distribution, external morphological characters of habit, leaf shape, phyllotaxy, inflorescence, color of floral organs, floral formula, carpel, capsule, and micro-characters of pollen, seed coat, stigma and anther with SEM were examined. Through this study, the following results were obtained. The delimitation of taxa that belong to section Telephium in Korea and their relationship Nomenclatural errors were corrected. In S. rotundifolium Lee, species epithet“rotundifolium”is later homonym of s. rothundifolium Lamarck, so corrected to S. duckbongii Chung and Kim by article 64 of ICBN. Phyllotaxy was elucidated to meaningless, character in sect. Telephium. S. taquetii was a separate species from S. viridescens and not of its synonym. S. alboroseum Baker in Korea was S. erythrostictum sensu Master not of S. erythrostictum Miquel. By this study , taxa of sect. Telephium in Korea were arranged to 7 species. Considering interspecific relationship of sect. Telephium, S. duckbongii and S. alboroseum are considered to be more advanced forms and S. viridescens, S. taquetii, and S. viviparum to be more primitive forms among 7 species.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to establish a characteristic discrimination of internal and external morphological standard of original plants and herbal states in Arisaema amurense var. serratum $N_{AKAI}$ and A. amurense $M_{AXIM}.$. Methods : In this studies, the external-internal morphological standards were determined by using stereoscope and butanol series. Results : 1. In the external shape of original plant, Arisaema amurense var. serratum $N_{AKAI}$ has high stem, an oval-elliptic leaflet and a serrate leaf margin. But A. amurense $M_{AXIM}$ has a relatively low stem, an upside oval leaflet and no serrate leaf margin. 2. On the herbs character of original plant, Arisaema amurense var. serratum $N_{AKAI}$ is small in height and diameter, but A. amurense $M_{AXIM}$ is relatively large in height and diameter. 3. On the gathered herbs character of original plant, the section of Arisaema amurense var. serratum $N_{AKAI}$ is brightly white, easily spilt and strong scent. But the section of A. amurense $M_{AXIM}$ is thin yellowish brown, not easily spilt and weak scent. Also the grade of gathered herbs, both can be classified by diameter and external scent. 4. In the current herbs character, Korean and Sichuan Province products are irregullar shape and have no scent, Jilin Province products are regular shape. Also, Guangxi Province products are small size and concave in one side, Hebei Province products are irregular size and shape. 5. In internal shape of original plant, epidermal cell of Arisaema amurense var. serratum is very tight. With the except of micro difference in parenchyma cell of cortex, on the whole there are nearly no differences with A. amurense $M_{AXIM}.$ Also, samely in the internal shape, according to collecting sites, epidermis exhibits a lot layer in curving state and secreting duct is developed and vascular bundle and exists between parenchyma cell of cortex. Conclusion : In the future, additional study is needed to distinguish herb and effect between same genus-degree of relatedness.

  • Cercaria larvae of Bacciger harengulae which is parasitic to Meretrix lusoria, rapes japonica and Solen strictus were studied in terms of their morphology and incidence of infection rate. The host bivalves were collected from Naechodo, Okgu-gun during the Period from January to November in 1980. The tail of the cercaria bears 27 pairs of tufts of setae, the tufts being composed of 6 fine rays. Oral sucker, intestine, ventral sucker and a pair of testes are distinctive. The excretory duct bears numerous granules of various size, and the flame-cell arrangement is represented by a formula 2[(3+3)+(3+3)]=24. The cercaria is somewhat similar to the previously known Cercaria pectinata . It is however conformed that present cercaria belongs to Bacciger harengulae. Infection rate showed seasonal variation and host selectivity. Higher infections were observed in Solen strictus, and lower in Meretrix lusoria. Generally, the larger bivalves over 2-3 years old showed the higher infection rate.
