  • In this work, in order to manufacture the photoelectrode of dye-sensitized solar cells, the different anatase $TiO_2$ paste was prepared by simple route using hydrothermal method. In comparison with the traditional preparing process, the hydrothermally synthesized $TiO_2$ gel was used to make paste directly. Thus, the making process was simplified and the solar conversion efficiency was improved. In comparison with 5.34% solar energy efficiency of HP-1 photoelectrode, the 6.23% efficiency of HDP-1 electrode was improved by 16.67%. This is because hydrothermally synthesized $TiO_2$ gel was used to make paste directly, the dispersibility between $TiO_2$ particles was improved and get the smoother network, leading to the charge transport ability of the electron generated in dye molecular was improved. Further, HDP-2 photoelectrode delivered the best results with Voc (open circuit voltage), Jsc (short circuit current density) FF (fill factor) and ${\eta}$(solar conversion efficiency) were 0.695 V, $15.81mA\;cm^{-2}$, 61.48% and 6.80%, respectively. In comparison with 5.34% of HP-1 photoelectrode, it was improved by 27.34%.

  • In this paper, two different electromagnetic energy harvesters using bulk micromachined silicon spiral springs and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) packaging technique have been fabricated, characterized, and compared to generate electrical energy from ultra-low ambient vibrations under 0.3g. The proposed energy harvesters were comprised of a highly miniaturized Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnet, silicon spiral spring, multi-turned copper coil, and PDMS housing in order to improve the electrical output powers and reduce their sizes/volumes. When an external vibration moves directly the magnet mounted as a seismic mass at the center of the spiral spring, the mechanical energy of the moving mass is transformed to electrical energy through the 183 turns of solenoid copper coils. The silicon spiral springs were applied to generate high electrical output power by maximizing the deflection of the movable mass at the low level vibrations. The fabricated energy harvesters using these two different spiral springs exhibited the resonant frequencies of 36Hz and 63Hz and the optimal load resistances of $99{\Omega}$ and $55{\Omega}$, respectively. In particular, the energy harvester using the spiral spring with two links exhibited much better linearity characteristics than the one with four links. It generated $29.02{\mu}W$ of output power and 107.3mV of load voltage at the vibration acceleration of 0.3g. It also exhibited power density and normalized power density of $48.37{\mu}W{\cdot}cm-3$ and $537.41{\mu}W{\cdot}cm-3{\cdot}g-2$, respectively. The total volume of the fabricated energy harvesters was $1cm{\times}1cm{\times}0.6cm$ (height).

  • The magnetic bio-sensor used the PHR (planar hall resistance) effect generated by the free layer in spin-valve giant magnetoresistance structure of Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn/Ta. The PHR element with micrometer size was fabricated through the photolithograph and dry etching process. The PHR signal with magnetic field was measured under the conditions of with and without single magnetic bead. A single magnetic bead of diameter $2.8\;{\mu}m$ was successfully detected using the PHR sensor. Therefore, the high resolution PHR sensor can be applied to bio-sensor application utilizing the output voltage variation of the PHR signals in the presence and absence of a single magnetic bead.

  • In this paper, the inductive power collector using electromagnetic induction for vehicle such as the PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) system is suggested and son ideas for power collector design to improve tile power transfer performance are presented. And also, the analysis of the inductive power transfer system in conjunction with series resonant converter operating variable high frequency is shown. Of particular interest is the sensitivity of the complete system to variations in operational frequency and parameters. In inductive power transfer system electrical power is transferred from a primary winding in the form of a coil or tract to one or more isolated pick-up coils that my relative to the primary. The ability to transmit power without contact enables high reliability and easy maintenance that allows inductive power transfer system to be implemented in hostile environments. This technology has found application in many fields such as electric vehicles, PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) etc. But, low output power is generated due to a loosely coupled characteristic of the large air-gap. Therefore, we will show you various characteristic of inductive power transfer system as double layer construction of secondary winding, which was divided in half to increase both output current and output voltage, a model of power collector and parallel winding structure, a model of concentration/ decentralization winding and the effects of parameter and operational frequency variation.

  • A laboratory scale experiment on phenol conversion properties by pulsed corona discharge process was carried out. Effects of operating parameters such as applied voltage, input oxygen, and electrode geometry on phenol conversion and solution properties were investigated. Electrical discharges generated in liquid phase increased the liquid temperature by heat transfer from current flow, decreased the pH value by producing various organic acids from phenol degradation, and increased conductivity by generating charge carriers and organic acids. The oxygen supply enhanced the phenol conversion through the ozone generation dissolution and the production of OH radicals. Series type electrode configuration induced more ozone production than reference type configuration because it produced gas phase discharges as well as liquid phase discharges. Therefore, the higher phenol conversion and TOC(total organic carbon) removal efficiency were obtained in series type configuration.

  • Background: Several studies have indicated that a nerve injury enhances the expression of the voltage-gated calcium channel ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$ subunit (Cav ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$) in sensory neurons and the dorsal spinal cord. This study examined whether NMDA receptor activation is essential for Cav ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$-mediated tactile allodynia in Cav ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$ overexpressing transgenic mice and L5/6 spinal nerve ligated rats (SNL). These two models show similar Cav ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$ upregulation and behavioral hypersensitivity, without and with the presence of other injury factors, respectively. Methods: The transgenic (TG) mice were generated as described elsewhere (Feng et al., 2000). The left L5/6 spinal nerves in the Harlan Sprague Dawley rats were ligated tightly (SNL) to induce neuropathic pain, as described by Kim et al. (1992). Memantine 2 mg/kg (10 ul) was injected directly into the L5/6 spinal region followed by $10{\mu}l$ saline. Tactile allodynia was tested for any mechanical hypersensitivity. Results: The tactile allodynia in the SNL rats could be reversed by an intrathecal injection of memantine 2 mg/kg at 1.5 hours. The tactile allodynia in the Cav ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$ over-expressing TG mice could be reversed by an intrathecal injection of memantine 2 mg/kg at 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 hours. Conclusions: The behavioral hypersensitivity was similar in the TG mice and nerve injury pain model, supporting the hypothesis that elevated Cav ${\alpha}2{\delta}1$ mediates similar pathways that underlie the pain states in both models. The selective activation of spinal NMDA receptors plays a key role in mediating the pain states in both the nerve-injury rats and TG mice.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS), which include hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), the superoxide anion (${O_2}^-{\cdot}$), and the hydroxyl radical ($OH{\cdot}$), are generated as by-products of oxidative metabolism in cells. The cerebral cortex has been found to be particularly vulnerable to production of ROS associated with conditions such as ischemia-reperfusion, Parkinson's disease, and aging. To investigate the effect of ROS on inhibitory GABAergic synaptic transmission, we examined the electrophysiological mechanisms of the modulatory effect of $H_2O_2$ on GABAergic miniature inhibitory postsynaptic current (mIPSCs) in mechanically isolated rat cerebral cortical neurons retaining intact synaptic boutons. The membrane potential was voltage-clamped at -60 mV and mIPSCs were recorded and analyzed. Superfusion of 1-mM $H_2O_2$ gradually potentiated mIPSCs. This potentiating effect of $H_2O_2$ was blocked by the pretreatment with either 10,000-unit/mL catalase or $300-{\mu}M$ N-acetyl-cysteine. The potentiating effect of $H_2O_2$ was occluded by an adenylate cyclase activator, forskolin, and was blocked by a protein kinase A inhibitor, N -(2-[p-bromocinnamylamino] ethyl)-5-isoquinolinesulfonamide hydrochloride. This study indicates that oxidative stress may potentiate presynaptic GABA release through the mechanism of cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA)-dependent pathways, which may result in the inhibition of the cerebral cortex neuronal activity.

  • When the driving voltage of an ultrasound transducer is increased to improve the quality of ultrasound images, heat is generated inside the transducer that can cause patient's skin burn and degradation of transducer performance. Hence, in this paper, a method to disperse the heat of the transducer has been studied. The phased array transducer having 3 MHz center frequency and 32 channels was selected for analyses of the thermal dispersion. First, mechanism of the heat generation was investigated in relation to the transducer operation through theoretical analysis, and material damping and sound pressure amplitude were confirmed to be influential on the heat generation. Further, we investigated the effects of the properties of the materials constituting the transducer on the thermal dispersion through finite element analysis. Based on the analysis results, we determined the thermal properties of the constituent materials that could facilitate the thermal dispersion inside the transducer. The determined thermal properties were applied to the finite element model, and the results showed that the maximum temperature at an acoustic lens contacting with a patient was decreased to 51 % of its initial value.

  • Electro-Discharge Sintering (EDS) employs a high-voltage/high-current-density pulse of electrical energy, discharged from a capacitor bank, to instantaneously consolidate powders. In the present study, a single pulse of 0.57-1.1 kJ/0.45 g-atomized spherical $Ti_{52}Zr_{28}Ni_{20}$ powders in size range of 10~30 and $30\sim50{\mu}m$ consisting of ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) and icosahedral phases were applied to examine the structural evolution of icosahedral phase during EDS. Structural investigation reveals that high electrical input energy facilitates complete decomposition of icosahedral phase into C14 laves and ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) phases. Moreover, critical input energy inducing decomposition of the icosahedral phase during EDS depends on the size of the powder. Porous Ti and W compacts have been fabricated by EDS using rectangular and spherical powders upon various input energy at a constant capacitance of $450{\mu}F$ in order to verify influence of powder shape on microstructure of porous compacts. Besides, generated heat (${\Delta}H$) during EDS, which is measured by an oscilloscope, is closely correlated with powder size.

  • Recently deep interests have been paid on the effective generation of ozone, which has been widely used for water treatment, deodorization, color removal, and chemical processing of exhausted smoke. The silent discharge reaction has been proposed as the most effective one in the many ozone generation methods, because the silent discharge can be generated under the conditions of lower applied voltage and power consumption, compared other ones. In this paper, in order to improve the ozone generation and ozone generation efficiency, the conventional silent discharge chamber with $Al_2O_3$ dielectric layer and tubular ferroelectric bed discharge reactor packed with $Al_2O_3$ pellets were made, and the silent discharge of the reactors were studied experimentally. The ozone generation characteristics are also discussed based on the discharge characteristics, especially on the wall charge accumulation properties and power consumption. The results show that the electric charges of discharge tube with bead are around 2.5 times as large as those without bead. In the discharge chamber packed with dielectric beads, the ozone concentration and the energy yield characteristics were also improved, compared with those in the conventional silent discharge reactor.
