  • This paper presents a generic modelling of composite steel-concrete beams with elastic shear connection. It builds on the well-known seminal technique of Newmark, Siess and Viest, in order to formulate the partial interaction formulation for solution under a variety of end conditions, and lends itself well for modification to enable direct quantification of effects such as shrinkage, creep, and limited shear connection slip capacity. This application is possible because the governing differential equations are set up and solved in a fashion whereby inclusion of the kinematic and static end conditions merely requires a statement of the appropriate constants of integration that are generated in the solution of the linear differential equations. The method is applied in the paper for the solution of the well-studied behaviour of simply supported beams with partial interaction, as well as to provide solutions for a beam encastr$\acute{e}$ at its ends, and for a propped cantilever.

  • This paper presents the mode-shape analysis of the cross-ply laminated composite cylindrical shallow shells. First, the kinematic relations of strains and deformation are given. Then, using Hamilton's principle, governing differential equations are developed for a general curved shell. Finally, the stress-strain relation for the laminated, cross-ply composite shells are obtained. By using some simplifications and assuming Fourier series as a displacement field, the governed differential equations are solved by the matrix algebra for shallow shells. Employing the computer algebra system called MATHEMATICA; a computer program has been prepared for the solution. The results obtained by this solution are compared with the results obtained by (ANSYS and SAP2000) programs, in order to verify the accuracy and reliability of the solution presented.

  • This paper determines the allocation of computers and data files to minimize the sum of processing and communication costs which occur in processing jobs at each node. The problem of optimally configuring a distributed computer system belongs to the class of NP-Complete problems and the object function of this paper is nonlinear function and is hard to solve. This paper seeks the solution of distributed processing system by Tabu Search. Firstly, it presents the method of generating the starting solution proper to the distributed processing system. Secondly, it develops the method of searching neighborhood solutions. Finally, it determines the Tabu restriction appropriate to the distributed processing system. According to the experimental results, this algorithm solves a sized problems in reasonable time and is effective in the convergence of the solution. The algorithm developed in this paper is also applicable to the general allocation problems of the distributed processing system.

  • We consider a power controlled code division multiple access (CDMA) system with multiple flow types. At each of the N nodes, there are F flow types with different signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) requirements. To keep the complexity of the transmitter low, we assume that each node uses the same power level for all its flows. The single flow case has been fully solved and is well-understood. We concentrate on the multiple flow case, and use a novel and different approach. For the uplink problem with N = 2 and F arbitrary, the necessary and sufficient conditions to have a solution are found and proved. For the general N > 1 uplink problem, we provide a necessary condition for the problem to have a solution and an iterative algorithm to find the optimum solution. For the downlink case with F > 1 some properties of the optimal sequences are obtained.

  • A computerized layout system based on a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) technique was developed to treat both facility layout and instrument panel layout problems. This layout system attempts to allocate various facilities under multiple layout criteria including qualitative design objectives. Since most of the design objectives can be understood as constraints which the layout solution must satisfy to improve the goodness of the solution, a CSP technique was employed to solve the multi-constraints layout problem. The effectiveness of the system was evaluated by the comparison with the well-known facility layout program, CORELAP. Furthermore, the proposed system can also be applied to the instrument panel layout problem successfully. Several user-centered guidelines were well reflected on the solution obtained. CONSLAY, the prototype layout system being developed in the research, greatly enhanced the interactions with the designer so as to deal with the problem-dependent nature of the layout problem and to properly reflect the domain-specific knowledge of the designer.

  • This paper considers the stability of positive steady-state solutions bifurcating from the trivial solution in a delayed Lotka-Volterra two-species predator-prey diffusion system with a discrete delay and subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on a general bounded open spatial domain with smooth boundary. The existence, uniqueness and asymptotic expressions of small positive steady-sate solutions bifurcating from the trivial solution are given by using the implicit function theorem. By regarding the time delay as the bifurcation parameter and analyzing in detail the eigenvalue problems of system at the positive steady-state solutions, the asymptotic stability of bifurcating steady-state solutions is studied. It is demonstrated that the bifurcating steady-state solutions are asymptotically stable when the delay is less than a certain critical value and is unstable when the delay is greater than this critical value and the system under consideration can undergo a Hopf bifurcation at the bifurcating steady-state solutions when the delay crosses through a sequence of critical values.

  • In this work, a mathematical model of beam-column system carrying a double eccentric end mass system is investigated, and solved analytically based on the exact solution analysis. The model considers the case in which the double eccentric end mass is a rigid storage tank containing fluid. Both Timoshenko and Bernoulli-Euler beam bending theories are considered. Equation of motion, general solution and boundary conditions for the present system model are developed and presented in dimensional and non-dimensional format. Several important non-dimensional design parameters are introduced. Symbolic and/or explicit formulae of the frequency and mode shape equations are formulated. To the authors knowledge, the present reduced closed form symbolic and explicit frequency equations have not appeared in literature. For different applications, the results are validated using commercial finite element package, namely ANSYS. The beam-column system investigated in this paper is significant for many engineering applications, especially, in mechanical and structural systems.

  • A general perturbation series solution of the Smoluchowski equation is applied to investigate the rate of recombination and the remaining probability of a pair of particles in liquids. The radiative boundary condition is employed and the convergence of the perturbation series is analyzed in terms of a convergene factor in time domain. The upper bound to the error introduced by the n-th order perturbation scheme is also evaluated. The long time behaviors of the rate of recombination and the remaining probability are found to be expressed in closed forms if the perturbation series is convergent. A new and efficient method of purely numerical integration of the Smoluchowski equation is proposed and its results are compared with those obtained by the perturbation method. For the two cases where the interaction between the particles is given by (i) the Coulomb potential and (ii) the shielded Coulomb potential, the agreement between the two results is found to be excellent.

  • A solution of space curved bars with generalized Winkler soil found by means of Transfer Matrix Method is presented. Distributed, concentrated loads and imposed strains are applied to the beam as well as rigid or elastic boundaries are considered at the ends. The proposed approach gives the analytical and numerical exact solution for circular beams and rings, loaded in the plane or perpendicular to it. A well-approximated solution can be found for general space curved bars with complex geometry. Elastic foundation is characterized by six parameters of stiffness in different directions: three for rectilinear springs and three for rotational springs. The beam has axial, shear, bending and torsional stiffness. Numerical examples are given in order to solve practical cases of straight and curved foundations. The presented method can be applied to a wide range of problems, including the study of tanks, shells and complex foundation systems. The particular case of box girder distortion can also be studied through the beam on elastic foundation (BEF) analogy.

  • In this paper, we study a linear system of homogeneous commensurate /incommensurate fractional-order differential equations by developing a new semi-analytical scheme. In particular, by decoupling the system into two fractional-order differential equations, so that the first equation of order (δ + γ), while the second equation depends on the solution for the first equation, we have solved the under consideration system, where 0 < δ, γ ≤ 1. With the help of using the Adomian decomposition method (ADM), we obtain the general solution. The efficiency of this method is verified by solving several numerical examples.
