Trends in the Household Labor Time of Korean Adults by Gender and Generation over the Last 20 Years (1999-2019) (한국 여성과 남성의 세대별 가사노동시간의 변화(1999-2019) : 가정관리 및 가족돌봄 시간을 중심으로)

  • The concept of household labor is composed of housework and family care, and it provides a framework for understanding daily life from the perspective of work-life balance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the household labor time of Korean adults by gender and generation over the last 20 years. Data was taken from the five Statistics Korea Life Time Surveys from 1999 (t1) to 2019 (t5) (n=69,196). The major results are as follows: first, gender and generation were found to have a significant relationship with household labor time over the study period. Household labor time for females was 3.8 times that of males in 1999, but females' household labor time decreased over the next 20 years while males' increased, including both housework and family care. The female participation rate in household work also remained steady, while that for males increased. Second, in the younger and middle generations, a similar gender and generational pattern was seen. Third, in the older generation, household time and participation rates for both females and males increased. The family welfare policy and theoretical implications of these results are discussed.

The Long-Term Stability of the Lower Incisor Axis in Class II division 2 Malocclusions (제II급 2류 부정교합에서 하악 절치 치축의 장기적인 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the post-retention stability of the lower incisor axis in Class II division 2 malocclusions. The dental casts and lateral cephalograms from before (T1) and after (T2) orthodontic treatment and long-term post-retention (T3) in 62 Class II division 2 malocclusion cases were included in this study. After several linear and angular measurements at each time were taken, the significance in the amount of change of the lower incisor axis for each gender and extraction versus non-extraction was evaluated. The results showed that the lower incisors that inclined labially during treatment were unstable and relapsed to the original lingual position in Class II division 2 malocclusions (p<0.001). There was no significant difference between extraction and non-extraction groups for the amount of lingual relapse of the lower incisors (p>0.05). There was no significant difference between male and female groups for the axial change of the lower incisors (p>0.05). As a result of multiple regression analysis, the cephalometric measurement best predicting the lower incisor position to the A-Pog line post-retention was pre-treatment L1-Apog(mm) and pre-treatment SNGoMe(). Because of the instability of labially inclined lower incisors after orthodontic treatment, the treatment goal should be the pre-treatment incisor axial position.

Preference for the Spatial Planning Elements of Units m Senior Congregate Housing according to Pre-Senior People (예비노인층의 노인공동생활주택 개별공간 계획요소에 대한 선호분석)

  • Korea is having entered the Ageing Society since 2000 and expected to be the Aged Society by 2019. Proliferation of the nuclear families, attitude shift of supporting the senior people and higher participation of married women in public life as well as the steadily increasing senior population have caused the need for development of the facilities or housings for the senior people. This study is based on the assumption that the congregate housing as one of the options for those senior people who are healthy enough do not need the nursing home. For the questionnaire survey, the preference of 500 Korean pre-senior people on spatial planning elements of units for the senior congregate housing was investigated. The collected data are analysed using SPSS 10.0 for Windows to deduce frequency, percentage, average, Chi-squared test with cross-tabulations. The results of this study were as follows; Most of respondents preferred to the size of 11-15pyung(for single), 21-25pyung(for couple). The type of spatial composition was preferred one-room type(for single), 1-2 bedroom type with kitchen (for couple). And they preferred L/DK type. Also, they preferred furnished units not to bring their own furniture when relocating to the senior congregate housing, which was somewhat different result from previous studies. There were significant differences between preferred spatial planning elements and gender, income, and level of education.

Serological Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi among Horses in Korea

  • Lyme disease is a tick-borne zoonotic infectious disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. The present study assessed the infection status of B. burgdorferi among horses reared in Korea using ELISA and PCR. Between 2009 and 2013, blood samples were collected from 727 horses throughout Korea. Data for each animal including age, gender, breed, and region of sample collection were used for epidemiological analysis. Overall, 38 (5.2%; true prevalence: 5.5%) of 727 horses were seropositive by ELISA. There were statistically significant differences according to breed and region (P<0.001) whose differences might be attributed to the ecology of vector ticks and climate conditions. Using 2 nested PCR, none of the samples tested positive for B. burgdorferi. Thus, a positive ELISA result can indicate only that the tested horse was previously exposed to B. burgdorferi, with no certainty over the time of exposure. Since global warming is likely to increase the abundance of ticks in Korea, continuous monitoring of tick-borne diseases in Korean horses is needed.

Effects of carcass weight increase on meat quality and sensory properties of pork loin

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of increasing carcass weight (CW) on meat quality traits including meat color, water-holding capacity (WHC), tenderness, backfat thickness and intramuscular fat (IMF) content of pork loin. A total of 96 pork carcasses (48 LYD [Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc] barrows and gilts) were selected at a commercial slaughterhouse. Each gender had commercial CW (≤ 90 kg), heavy CW (91-100 kg) and very heavy CW (> 100 kg) (16 carcasses from each CW group). Loin cuts (Longissimus lumborum) were excised to investigate meat color (CIE L*a*b*), drip loss, cooking loss, released water, Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and IMF content. Backfat thickness and IMF content of pork loin samples were significantly (p < 0.05) increased with increasing CW, although there was no significant difference in ultimate pH (pHu). CIE a* increased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing CW, while there were no significant differences in CIE L* or CIE b* among CW groups. Although all WHC measures showed no significant differences among CW groups, WBSF increased significantly (p < 0.01) with increasing CW. Sensory flavor score was significantly increased while panel score for tenderness was decreased significantly (p < 0.001) with increasing CW. Consequently, CW had a positive correlation with flavor but negative correlation with tenderness. These results indicate that the increased IMF content improves flavor, juiciness and palatability, although tenderness deteriorates with increasing CW.

Attitudes and Knowledge toward Koryo Hand Therapy(KHT) by the Experienced People (수지요법 경험자들의 수지요법에 대한 태도와 지식)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the current attitudes and knowledge toward Koryo Hand Therapy(KHT) by the experienced people. Method: The Subjects for this study included 3,351 people living in Korea who experienced KHT. The data were collected from April 6 to November 25, 2004 using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed through the SAS 8.1 Windows Program using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The results of the study are as follows: 1) Families and relatives were a main source of information about Koryo Hand Therapy. The subjects were very satisfied with therapeutic and preventive effects of the therapy. Sujichim was the most preferable choice in the KHT. Most of the subjects thought that KHT could be applied to modern medicine. 2) Those who experienced KHT had a high level of knowledge and very positive attitudes toward KHT. 3) There were statistically significant differences in the attitude toward KHT according to age, gender, educational level, religion, income, place of residence, marital status and experience which studied KHT. 4) There were significant differences in the knowledge of KHT according to age, educational level, income, marital status and experience which studied KHT. 5) The data showed positive correlation between attitude and knowledge. Conclusion: According to the above findings, it can be concluded that KHT needs to be actively informed and more easily approached by general peoples. Nursing protocols of KHT needed to be developed.

Consumer Awareness about Genetically Modified Food According to Gender and Age (유전자재조합식품에 대한 성별, 연령별 소비자의 인지도 조사)

  • A survey of consumer awareness and attitudes was conducted about genetically modified (GM) foods and the labeling regulations. The questionnaires were distributed to 4,620 consumers who lived in a variety of areas in Korea, and 4,076 people responded. The consumers were asked about knowledge, labeling information, and the source of obtaining information about GM foods. More than 11.5% of the consumers had never heard about GM foods and 86.9% of consumers had less than a normal level of knowledge about GM foods. No statistically significant relationship was found between genders, but the teachers group had moderate knowledge (p<0.001). In total, 28.4% of consumers did not know the GMO labeling regulations. They answered that the reason to buy GM food was do not know>nothing wrong>create benefit>think as safe>inexpensive. The answers to the question of what was the first benefit were: solve food shortage>functional and nutritious food>cultivate in bad condition>nothing>various cultivars. They answered that the worst factor was the next generation effect>environmental disruption. Regarding the development of GM food in Korea, males answered do not know>stronglyrecommend>defer>strongly suppress. Female answered: don't know>defer>strongly recommend>strongly suppress. More than half of the respondents did not have much information about GM foods; 88.3% of respondents answered they did not have educational experience about GM food.

Study on Differences in Perception of Weight Management, Balanced Food Intake, Knowledge of Obesity, and Nutrition Knowledge in Male and Female University Students (남녀 대학생의 체중관리, 식품섭취 균형성, 비만지식, 영양지식 인지차이에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine differences in perception of weight management, balanced food intake, knowledge of obesity, and nutrition knowledge in university students. The average weight and height of male subjects were 175.0±5.7cm and 69.1±11.8kg, whereas those of female subjects were 161.7±5.0cm and 51.7±6.9kg, respectively. Average scores for balanced food intake were not significantly different between male and female students. The total number of correct answers for obesity knowledge was not significantly different according to gender, but four responses related with losing weight showed higher perception scores in females compared to males (p<0.05). The total number of correct answers for nutrition knowledge was not significantly different between males and females. The average BMI of male and female subjects were 22.5±3.44 and 19.7±2.21, respectively, ranged in normality. Self-evaluation of body shape was mostly in the normal or standard range in both males and females, but females showed a higher perception rate of chubby or fat than males. The percentages of interest in weight management was 36.0% in males and 50.8% in females, with higher interest in female subjects (p<0.01).

Effects of Secondhand Smoke on Mental Health in Adolescents (청소년의 간접흡연이 정신건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of secondhand smoke on depression and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods: The study used the raw data of the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2018). Age, academic achievement, living with family, economic status, and stress were adjusted and the relationship between secondhand smoke and depression and suicidal thoughts was analyzed by gender. Results: The results showed that secondhand smoke had a significant effect on mental health of adolescents. Male students who experienced secondhand smoke at school and at public places had 1.41 times and 1.37 times higher depression rates, respectively. Female students who experienced secondhand smoke at home, school, and public places had 1.27 times, 1.35 times, and 1.39 times higher depression rates, respectively. Suicidal thoughts were 1.17 times and 1.22 times higher among male students who experienced secondhand smoke at school and at public places. Female students who experienced secondhand smoke at home, school, and public places had 1.12 times, 1.08 times, and 1.21 times more suicidal thoughts. Conclusion: Secondhand smoke has a significant effect on adolescent depression and suicidal thoughts. Therefore, efforts should be made to have institutional changes and increased awareness across the country, such as homes, schools, and communities, to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke.

Profiles of Epstein-Barr Virus Associated Gastric Carcinomas in Brunei Darussalam

  • Background: Gastric cancer is the second most common gastrointestinal cancer and is largely attributed to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. In addition, studies have also shown association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in 10% of gastric cancers. This study assessed the characteristics of EBV associated gastric cancers (EBVaGC) in Brunei Darussalam. Materials and Methods: This study included gastric cancers diagnosed between 2008 and 2012, registered with the Department of Pathology RIPAS Hospital, Brunei Darussalam. Clinical case notes were systematically reviewed. Histology specimens were all stained for EBV and also assessed for intestinal metaplasia and H. pylori. Results: There were a total of 81 patients (54 male and 27 females) with a mean age of 65.8±14.8years included in the study. Intestinal metaplasia and active H. pylori infection were detected in 40.7% and 30.9% respectively. A majority of the tumors were proximally located (55.6%), most poorly differentiated (well differentiated 16%, moderately differentiated 30.9% and poorly differentiated 53.1%) and the stages at diagnosis were; stage I (44.4%), stage II (23.5%), stage III (8.6%) and stage IV (23.5%). EBV positivity (EBVaGC) was seen in 30.9%. Between EBVaGC and EBV negative gastric cancers, there were no significant differences (age, gender, ethnic group, presence of Intestinal metaplasia, tumor locations, stages of disease and degree of tumor differentiation). Conclusions: This study showed that a third of gastric cancers in Brunei Darussalam were positive for EBV, higher than what have been reported in the literature. However, there were no significant differences between EBVaGC and EBV negative gastric cancers. This suggests that the role of EBV in gastric cancer may be mostly incidental rather than any causal relation. However, further studies are required.
